Playoff ticket? Punched.

While the postseason brackets haven’t been released yet, three teams have advanced out of the 1A Olympic League every year the conference has been active.

If that stays true, and there seems to be no reason it won’t, the Coupeville High School girls soccer squad has clinched one of those slots.

Riding a late goal from breakout freshman star Genna Wright, the Wolves escaped with a nail-biting 3-2 win over visiting Chimacum Tuesday night.

The victory lifts CHS to 4-1 in league play, 6-4 overall and pulls it within a half game of league leader Klahowya (4-0, 9-0).

Port Townsend (1-3, 2-6) and Chimacum (0-5, 0-6) round out the standings, and, with the loss, the Cowboys can’t finish ahead of Coupeville.

If both teams were to take opposite paths and somehow end up tied at 4-5 in league play at the end of the season, the Wolves would own a tiebreaker for winning the season series.

While Tuesday’s game wasn’t a romp like the first time the schools played — back then Coupeville strolled to a 7-2 win — it showcased the Wolves at their gritty best.

Kalia Littlejohn found the back of the net early in the game to stake CHS to a lead, but the plucky Cowboys responded with a pair of goals to shake things up.

“After that we settled down and got our defense in order,” Coupeville coach Kyle Nelson said.

Littlejohn banged home her 15th goal of the season midway through the first half to knot the game at two, and that’s where it stayed for quite some time.

Coupeville had numerous second-half opportunities, but the Cowboys escaped time and again, until Sage Renninger broke the defense.

The senior captain rifled a “well-taken corner kick” and put it on Wright’s toe, allowing the young sharpshooter to flick it past the net-minder with “a great finish.”

It was Wright’s eighth score of the season, leaving her just two shy of the team single-season record for goals by a freshman.

That mark of ten goals was set two years ago by none other than Littlejohn.

Now midway through her junior season, Kalia’s two-goal night Tuesday pulls her to 33 career goals, two back of older sister Mia, who scored 35 from 2014-2016.

With the win, the Wolves, who have back-to-back non-league tilts against 2A schools Port Angeles and Sequim up next on the schedule, improved to 3-1 in one-goal games this season.

While he might have preferred another romp, a win is a win, especially when it comes against a rival, something Nelson could appreciate.

“Another league victory, so it was a good night, even if it was close,” he said.

It was domination, pure and simple.

Which didn’t mean it always came easy, though.

The Coupeville High School boys tennis team took an important step Wednesday on the path to fighting for a third straight Olympic League championship.

Putting visiting Chimacum down hard, the Wolves rolled to a 7-0 win, evening their conference record at 1-1.

That pulls the Wolves back within a game of Klahowya (2-0) heading into a road match Friday with the Eagles.

Return from Silverdale with a victory and Coupeville would be tied for first, with the schools having split their first two meetings this season.

With Chimacum (0-2) being unable to mount a serious resistance, the title is fated to be a two-team race.

If CHS gets payback Friday, then Oct. 5, when Klahowya comes to Whidbey Island, would likely be a winner-take-all rumble with the league title at stake.

While the Cowboys aren’t anywhere close to being as dangerous as the Eagles, Chimacum did put up a strong battle in Wednesday’s premier match.

That one pitted Wolf foreign exchange student Pedro Gamarra against Port Townsend’s Isaiah Treibel.

The RedHawks don’t have a tennis program, so they have an agreement with Chimacum which allows a handful of players to swing a racket alongside their normal rivals.

Treibel, a strong player against the Wolves in the past, came out firing, but Gamarra didn’t wilt, mixing power with pluck.

The duo took turns lashing winners, with Gamarra kicking the ball soccer-style into the net on failed points, and the action seemed to relax the Spaniard and help him focus.

Despite trailing in both sets, he fought his way back again and again, finally felling Treibel in a second-set tiebreaker.

When the last point fell in, Gamarra’s American teammates whooped and hollered, causing the low-key netter to crack a quiet smile as he exited the court.

Other than in #1 singles, Coupeville romped, with five of the other 10 varsity sets played ending in a 6-0 win for the Wolves.

Complete Wednesday results:

It came dangerously close to being a miracle comeback.

If you went to the parking lot just a hair early Thursday, you missed a wild finish to the season debut of the Coupeville Middle School football squad.

Down by two scores with under a minute to play, the Wolves pulled off half a stunning rally, only to finally have luck (and the clock) run out on them in a 21-14 loss to visiting Chimacum.

Damon Stadler sent a jolt of electricity through the packed bleachers, ripping a ball free and careening 80+ yards down the left sideline for a defensive touchdown with just 43 ticks left on the clock.

That pulled CMS from the brink of a sure loss to the tantalizing possibility of overtime, but it wasn’t to be, as Chimacum fell on Xavier Murdy’s ensuing onside kick.

The late-game heroics capped a game in which a thin, inexperienced Coupeville squad held its own pretty dang well.

Wolf coach Bob Martin has 20 players on his roster, but five of those weren’t wearing pads Thursday, leaving him with a fairly short bench.

Chimacum, which featured a surprisingly beefy line, controlled the pace of the game in the early going, building a 14-0 lead by running, running some more, then running one final time.

The Wolves sputtered a bit on offense in the first half, finally putting everything together on their final possession before halftime.

Caleb Meyer got things going when he brought back a kick-off 35 yards, then Murdy went to work under center.

The CMS 8th grader, replacing the departed Cade Golden at QB, hit Scott Hilborn and Hawthorne Wolfe on short passes to soften the defense, before connecting with Cody Roberts on his first scoring play.

A 36-yard catch-and-run, in which Roberts shed several would-be tacklers as he rambled down the left sideline, put CMS on the board, though the extra point attempt was thwarted by a bad snap.

The two teams burned some serious clock in the third quarter, going through 12 scoreless minutes during which each team had just a single possession.

If you were expecting Chimacum to go away from its clock-burning ways in the fourth quarter, you’d be out a few bucks, as the Cowboys continued to use a steady stream of runs to milk time.

When they finally bashed in their third score of the afternoon on a five-yard plunge up the middle, they had frittered away another eight-plus minutes, finally exiting the field up 21-6 with 3:52 to play.

Not having been on offense since early in the third quarter, Coupeville promptly went three and out and all the Cowboys had to do was run the clock out.

Enter Stadler and cue the miracle that almost was.

After his touchdown was made official — a flag on the field momentarily put a damper on things, but turned out not to be a Wolf spirit-crusher — Murdy nailed the PAT kick, which in middle school football is worth two points.

Coupeville set up for an onside kick, hoping to retrieve the ball and have a shot at a tie or win, but Murdy’s kick didn’t take a vicious enough bounce and a Cowboy fell face-first on it, ending things with a whimper and not a bang.

Season ends now, they’re league champs.

Just sayin’…

Yes, yes, there are still plenty of games to go, and three-time Olympic League champ Klahowya has yet to play a conference tilt, but, for one night at least, Coupeville is on top of the girls soccer world.

Shredding Chimacum’s defense with ease Tuesday, the Wolf booters rolled to a 7-2 road win in their league opener.

Now 2-1 overall, Coupeville split the scoring duties four ways against the Cowboys.

Lindsey Roberts, Kalia Littlejohn and Genna Wright banged home two goals apiece, while Avalon Renninger put the cherry on top with a score of her own.

Littlejohn, who leads the Wolf squad with four goals, has scored in every game this season.

The junior sharpshooter now has 22 tallies in her career, pulling her closer to big sister Mia, who set the program’s scoring record with 35 goals from 2014-2016.

With her own two-goal night, Roberts sits with three scores on the season.

It was the first time Renninger and Wright had found the back of the net, with the latter notching her first official high school goals.

The freshman whiz kid also scored during the season-opening jamboree, but that goal doesn’t count towards her season total.

Coupeville also doled out its assists, with Wright and Sage Renninger each picking up a pair.

Roberts and Littlejohn set up other goals, while one score — off a free kick by Roberts — was unassisted.

With his team kicking off a three-game road trip with the Chimacum game (the Wolves travel to Sequim Thursday and Port Townsend Saturday), CHS coach Kyle Nelson was pleased with much of what he saw.

“We will call it a “taking care of business” type of game,” he said. “Overall we continue to be making progress; our passing game took a nice jump forward as we continue to work on various aspects of our game.

“We also left Chimacum healthy as we start a succession of away games this week,” Nelson added. “Sequim tomorrow should be a good test for us as we continue to look to improve.”

Brutally efficient.

Attacking from the moment it hopped off the ferry to the moment it clambered back on Tuesday, the Coupeville High School volleyball squad looked very much like the unit that swept to a league crown last season.

Decimating host Chimacum in straight sets, the Wolves ran their season record to 2-0, while grabbing a huge win in their Olympic League opener.

Key to the 25-9, 25-11, 25-4 romp were keywords like aggressiveness and consistency, something every coach wants to see.

“Very happy with our consistent play today,” CHS spiker guru Cory Whitmore said. “Playing our speed and back to aggressive serving and attacking.”

Once the ball was in play, every Wolf on the floor chipped in with solid, often inspired play.

“The setters did a great job of distributing the ball,” Whitmore said. “But our passers provided great first ball contacts to work with.”

Sophomore Maya Toomey-Stout led Coupeville at the service stripe, pounding home five aces, while three of her veteran teammates — Payton Aparicio, Lauren Rose and Katrina McGranahan — chipped in with four apiece.

Rose collected 11 assists, sharing set-up duties with Ashley Menges (six assists), while McGranahan (six kills) and Aparicio (four kills) were the primary beneficiaries.

Coupeville, which doesn’t play its first home match until Sept. 26, is off to Yakima for the SunDome Volleyball Festival Friday, an all-day event which pits 32 schools drawn from 1B, 2B, 1A and 2A.

The tourney, which is played on the same courts where the 1A state tourney is held, will give the Wolves a feel of what it would be like to play in the big show.

CHS advanced to state four straight years from 2001-2004, winning at least one match every time, but hasn’t been back since, a streak this year’s senior-led squad wants to break.

Young guns sweep:

Coupeville swept to straight-sets wins in both JV and C-Team action, as well.

“The JV just cruised. They carried on where they left off from this weekend (at the South Whidbey Invite) and just dominated both sets,” said Wolf JV coach Chris Smith. “After facing varsity competition all weekend the JV was geared up and ready to play at a different level.

“They were playing well as a team and set the tone from the service line.”

The C-Team, comprised of freshmen, saw action against a rival for the first time this season.

“The nerves were high with the ‘C’ team, but once they settled down they cruised,” Smith said.
