Want to be a hoops star like Kyla Briscoe? Currently in grades 2-7? Then this summer’s Coupeville basketball skills camp is for you. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

Build your t-shirt collection and hone your skills.

Coupeville High School basketball coaches and players are running a youth skills camp this summer, and it shouldn’t be missed.

It’s open to Coupeville School District students who are entering grades 3-8 next fall (so, that means the child is CURRENTLY in grades 2-7) and is just a low, low $10 for three days of activity.

The camp, which will be held in the high school and middle school gyms, is set for June 18-20.

Sessions run from 9-11 AM (boys) and 12-2 PM (girls) each day.

Players will be split up, so younger and older players will have an opportunity to work within their age groups.

Registration deadline is May 31 and payment is due at check-in on the first day of camp. Your $10 gets you three days of instruction and a camp t-shirt.

Rockin’ and rollin’.

Fleet-footed CHS track stars (l to r) Mallory Kortuem, Natalie Hollrigel, Maya Toomey-Stout and Lucy Sandahl catch the ferry home Wednesday from Sequim. (Deb Smith photo)

It had a little bit of a David vs. Goliath feel.

Coupeville, a 2B-sized school forced to masquerade as a 1A, was but a speck Wednesday, at least compared to its track and field rivals.

And yet, facing a trio of large 2A schools at a four-team meet in Sequim, the Wolves held their own, winning four events and setting 12 PR’s.

The CHS girls, buoyed by victories from Mallory Kortuem (400), Lindsey Roberts (100 Hurdles) and Lauren Bayne (High Jump), finished third in the team standings.

With 52 points, the Wolves narrowly missed catching Olympic (58), while easily beating Sequim (40). A very-deep North Kitsap squad (117) ran away with the victory.

On the boys side, Coupeville was missing several top athletes.

Running ace Danny Conlisk and thrower Chris Battaglia were dealing with health issues, while sprint god Jacob Smith had to scratch most of his events Wednesday after his hamstring tightened up.

Without three of their biggest individual scorers, the Wolf boys settled for a win in the high jump from Ariah Bepler, finishing fourth in the team race with 30.5 points.

North Kitsap (105), Sequim (69) and Olympic (59.5) rounded out the field.

Coupeville spread its PR’s out, with 11 athletes getting at least one.

Keahi Sorrows led the way, bettering his previous top marks in both the shot put and discus.

Kameryn St Onge ripped off a series of silky shots Wednesday as she and partner Maggie Crimmins sailed to a straight-sets win. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

It was a genteel beat-down.

In a match where every other sentence began with “thank you” and the sound of laughter-laced conversation drifted from almost every court, Wednesday’s girls tennis match was far from a fight to the death.

Even if one team convincingly crushed the other between the lines.

The victor was a Coupeville High School squad which captured its fourth win in its last five matches, blanking visiting Friday Harbor 5-0.

The non-conference victory, coming against a longtime foe, lifts the Wolves to 4-5 on the season.

Adding two wins in three JV matches (against Friday Harbor’s varsity players), Coupeville was on cruise control all afternoon.

In fact, CHS coach Ken Stange gave his top two players a break, sending doubles duo Payton Aparicio and Sage Renninger off to train with a volunteer assistant coach rather than play against Friday Harbor.

The Wolves who did take the court were often deadly efficient, with Kameryn St Onge and Avalon Renninger, in particular, ripping off some extremely-nasty left-handed winners in two different matches.

The biggest drama came at #1 singles, but it didn’t involve any shot-making or rallies.

Instead, it arrived thanks to a broken shoelace which momentarily brought Coupeville ace Claire Mietus down low midway through the second set.

But, after pulling out the remaining lace, moving it around and retying a now much-shorter lace, she was able to keep her shoe on her foot long enough to close out her second win in as many days.

Complete Wednesday results:

1st Singles — Claire Mietus beat Alli Benz 6-2, 6-4

2nd Singles — Genna Wright beat Laurel Robertson 6-2, 6-3

CHS track guru Randy King unleashes a voting tsunami. (Photos by JohnsPhotos.net)

“It’s good to be the king, baby!”

Randy King’s fan club stays up late.

When I went to bed Tuesday night, the battle in the 2nd annual CHS Coach Supreme poll was a very-close, three-person tussle.

By the time I emerged from my covers Wednesday morning, the Wolf track guru had emerged as a solid winner, holding off the combined forces of softball coaches Kevin and Justine McGranahan.

King, who has the most seasons of any active coach at the school, covering past stints in basketball and football and his current run in track, follows in the wake of Ryan King (no relation), who won the poll in its inaugural season.

Despite the fact I’m 99.99% certain he didn’t cast a single vote for himself, Randy loyalists got their man a totally prestigious, and totally imaginary, award.

He finished with 1,024 votes, which accounted for 22.82% of the 4,487 cast.

Rounding out the top five were Kevin McGranahan (605), Justine McGranahan (580), track assistant Sylvia Hurlburt (400) and volleyball head man Cory Whitmore (363).

There was a field of 30 coaches in the poll, covering everyone who was a head or assistant coach at Coupeville High School during the 2017-2018 school year.
