Brad Sherman, here playing in the Roehl Roundball Classic, will be the new CHS boys basketball head coach. (John Fisken photo)

The Three-Ball King is coming back to the gym.

Barring a last second snafu, legendary former Coupeville High School athlete Brad Sherman will be the new boys basketball head coach at his alma mater.

The recommendation to hire him for the position was slipped on to the agenda for tonight’s school board meeting at the last second, buried under a bunch of other hires (soccer, cheer, football) which were already public knowledge.

Sherman, who graduated in 2003, is currently an assistant coach with the Wolf football and track programs.

During his days as a high school athlete, he set football QB records which still stand, and was a standout on the hardwood as well.

He jointly held the single-game record for three-pointers made in one game, with six, until this past season, when senior Gabe Wynn hit seven against Port Townsend.

Sherman inherits a team which will return many of its key players, including leading scorer Hunter Smith.

For more background on the quiet legend, take a look at a “Where Are They Now?” feature I wrote awhile back:

Ten years later, the legend of Brad Sherman still looms large!!

Wolf sophomore Danny Conlisk will run in the 400, 800 and 4 x 400 at state. (Dawnelle Conlisk photo)

Everything’s set. Now they just wait.

The seeds for the 1A state track and field championships have been released, and the 10 Wolves headed to Cheney May 25-27 know how they stack up against their competition.

If the seeds hold, Coupeville is on target to bring home six medals (you need a top eight finish), three on either side of the gender divide.

But, as last year, when the Wolves won nine medals as a team, was a testament, no one can guarantee anything.

Anyone, from a #1 seed to a #17 seed, can trip, drop a baton, get ill or, conversely, have the meet of their dreams.

Wolves like Lindsey Roberts and Dalton Martin entered that 2016 meet ranked outside the top eight in an event, but finished on the victory stand, medal in hand.

It’s one meet to decide the fate of the track universe. Anything can happen.

But first, the cold hard numbers headed to Cheney:

Girls:

100 — Maya Toomey-Stout (11th) 12.96

200 — Toomey-Stout (10th) 26.76

100 Hurdles — Lindsey Roberts (8th) 15.97

4 x 100 Relay — Lauren Grove, Mallory Kortuem, Toomey-Stout, Roberts (8th) 51.05

4 x 200 Relay — Grove, Kortuem, Toomey-Stout, Roberts (6th) 1:47.67

High Jump — Lauren Bayne (16th) 4-08

Boys:

100 — Jacob Smith (5th) 11.29

200 — Smith (2nd) 22.51

400 — Danny Conlisk (10th) 51.42

800 — Conlisk (15th) 2:07.02

4 x 400 Relay — Henry Wynn, Smith, Mitchell Carroll, Conlisk (10th) 3:33.24

Long Jump — Carroll (13th) 20-02.50

Triple Jump — Carroll (3rd) 43-03

High Jump — Ariah Bepler (9th) 5-10

Sarah Wright makes it official, stamping on home after blasting a two-run home run at the district tourney. (John Fisken photos)

CHS football legend Paul Messner (rockin’ the impressive beard) and family made the trip off-Island to watch the Wolves play.

Wolf center-fielder Hope Lodell vacuums up another fly ball.

In the year of the long ball, Katrina McGranahan crushes yet another moon shot.

CHS assistant coach Ron Wright fears not the sunburn (likely) headed his way.

Lauren Rose, your friendly neighborhood Terminator.

Head coach Kevin McGranahan enjoys the show (and the knowledge that, unlike Wright, his head is shielded from the sun).

Kyla Briscoe gets the rally caps going.

After a season of rain, rain and more rain, the finale was soaked in sun.

Playing four games (and 33 innings) in 26 hours at the West Central District 3 tourney in Tacoma, the Coupeville High School softball sluggers finally had reason to use sunblock.

They also had plenty of opportunities to get their close-ups, as busy bee paparazzi John Fisken popped in while bouncing from locale to locale Saturday, shooting Whidbey Island athletes competing in postseason action.

Wolf throwers (l to r) Skyler Lawrence, Allison Wenzel and Alexxis Otto smile for the camera after kickin’ butt and takin’ ribbons in the discus.

Ariah Bepler drops over the bar on his way to winning the high jump, punching his ticket to state.

CHS senior Lauren Grove is headed back to state for a third, and final, time.

Ashlie Shank advertises her school while waiting for her event.

Naika Hallam fires the javelin skyward.

Landing with a splash in the triple jump, foreign exchange student Aurora Zanardi ends her American high school track days.

For some, it was the next step. For others, the final stop.

But, regardless of whether they advanced to state or not, all the Coupeville High School track stars competing at the district meet in Renton Saturday got a chance to shine in front of John Fisken’s camera.
