You know, I’ve seen Will Butela drink his body weight in frozen coffee, in 12 seconds flat.

So, basically, if nothing else, our time together at Videoville let me fully realize he would be a star — or end up on the FBI’s Most Wanted list. One of the two.

Mr. Butela and fellow Coupeville High School grad/shenanigans-causer Mike Duke continue to carve out their niche in the world of sports entertainment.

If you haven’t listened to all 41 of their Fun Brothers podcasts, well, your world is a dank, gray Hellscape, now isn’t it?

Here’s the latest episode:

Teamwork wins out in the end.

This year’s South Whidbey High School cross country team photo features an unexpected bit of red and black.

The Falcons decided to include Coupeville runners Henry Wynn and Danny Conlisk — who trained and traveled with them since CHS doesn’t have a harrier program of its own — in the official team pic.

So, solid proof Island rivals can work together in photographic harmony.

Lauren Grove (left) and Lauren Rose helped spark Coupeville to a tourney title this past weekend.

Now things get interesting.

The first week of high school basketball was about non-conference games and tournament play (the CHS girls won their second straight Friday Harbor Tip-Off Classic), but things ramp up in week two.

Both Coupeville teams will play three games this coming week, with the first two Wednesday and Friday being 1A Olympic League clashes with Chimacum and Klahowya.

So far, the league’s girls teams have fared better, much better, than the boys, boasting a 6-3 mark in non-conference games against a combined 1-7 for their male counterparts.

Records through Monday morning:

Olympic League girls basketball:

School League Overall
COUPEVILLE 0-0 2-1
Chimacum 0-0 1-1
Klahowya 0-0 2-0
Port Townsend 0-0 1-1

Olympic League boys basketball:

David and Amy King (John Fisken photo)

They’re riding a wave of euphoria.

Coming off of back-to-back wins over Seattle Academy and Friday Harbor, both schools which made it to state last year, the CHS girls basketball squad is flying high.

Now the Wolves plunge into 1A Olympic League play against Chimacum and Klahowya this coming week, trying to keep Coupeville’s 18-game undefeated streak in conference play alive.

As he prepares, Wolf round-ball guru David King found a few moments to take up residence in the Coaches Corner.

His thoughts:

Defensively when we are active and communicating we can be very disruptive.

We like what we are seeing; however, we are still a work in progress.

This shows in some lapses throughout the first three games.

We are also fouling too much instead of getting in good defensive position.

Offensively we aren’t quite on the same level as our defense.

Heading into our first league games this season we have to tighten things up and reduce our turnovers. Most of these are self-inflicted.

Our intangibles are up and down.

We have had one outstanding rebounding game.

Because of the defensive effort we have impressed in getting steals.

I would like to see us sharing the ball more offensively, but I’ve seen glimpses of some very good stuff. As a team, we are doing a good job of being on the same page.

This upcoming week will be a good test for us.

We need to keep doing the things we are doing well and improve in the areas that have gotten us in trouble over the first three games.
