Cresting right at the end.

That’s what the Coupeville Middle School track and field team is doing, notching tons of PRs as they head towards the finish line of the season.

Competing at a three-team meet in Port Angeles Tuesday, the Wolves compiled an astounding 35 personal bests as they prepped for the season finale.

That comes Wednesday, May 25, when CMS travels to Sequim for the league meet.

For now, they can bask in the afterglow of a strong afternoon on the oval and in the field, where Jillian Mayne (long jump, javelin, shot put) and Matthew Kelley (long jump, discus, high jump) paced the squad with three PRs apiece.

Jaylen Nitta

Jaylen Nitta flies by the camera.

They went a long way for a lot of PRs.

Having made it off the Island — unlike the high school softball squad, which was left high and dry by a low tide — the Coupeville Middle School track and field team made it to the mainland Tuesday and wandered down to Sequim.

Once there, the Wolves put on a run ‘n gun show, battling their hosts and Forks in a three-team meet.

“LOTS of PR’s!!!!,” said a very happy coach, Elizabeth Bitting, after she, fellow track guru Bob Martin and their team completed the long trek and finally made it back home.

The track sheets I have only listed yesterday’s times, though, so you’ll have to guess where the records were set.

Think of it as a fun little side game.

Let the PRs rain down.

Competing at a three-team meet in Port Townsend Wednesday, the Coupeville Middle School track and field squads racked up 44 personal bests, spreading those out among 28 competitors.

The Wolves also brought home a new school record, courtesy the 8th grade boys 4 x 100 relay team of Jean Lund-Olsen, Jaylen Nitta, Sean Toomey-Stout and Nick Wielandt.

When it came to personal accomplishment, Ashleigh Battaglia was the front-runner, nabbing PRs in all four of her events (100, 75 hurdles, long jump and discus).

Jake Mitten, Ben Smith and Sam Wynn paced the boys with three PRs each.

Ethan Marx (John Fisken photos)

Genna Wright

Genna Wright, surveying her kingdom.

They’re keeping the family business strong.

Ethan Marx and Genna Wright, who celebrate a joint birthday today, are both the youngest in families with a strong Coupeville athletic tradition.

Marx, who just days ago delivered a three-run double to propel the Wolf baseball squad to its first league title in 25 years, follows on the heels of older sister Haley, a star soccer and basketball player at CHS.

Wright is the latest in a long line of super-talented folks from her family, a diverse group that includes a host of older siblings and cousins.

She’s only a 7th grader, and is the youngest birthday celebrator we’ve featured in this series, but she’s already turning heads.

A fiery, fun-lovin’ competitor, no matter the sport (and she plays just about everything plus spends a considerable amount of time on the slopes), Genna takes most closely after older sister Sarah.

Both play at 120 MPH, crashing around and through teammates when necessary and are a lot of fun, on and off the court.

Marx may be a little quieter, but he’s just as dedicated, and, obviously, doesn’t shy away from the spotlight of the big stage.

As the duo hit their cake day, we just want to take a moment to wish them both happy birthday and all the best for their (very bright) futures.

You’re both legacies, and you’re upholding that legacy extremely well.

Good on you.
