Up the hill they came, one after another.

As I waited to turn out onto Highway 20 from Sherman Road the other day, a wave of Coupeville Middle School cross country runners worked their way past, conquering the somewhat steep rise of the Kettles trail.

Leading into their season opener Saturday at the 44th Carl Westling Invitational in Langley, the Wolves are putting in the miles for new head coach Amber Wyman.

Scotlyn Helm visualizes another sweet, sweet victory. (Photos courtesy Jerry Helm)

They’re not slowing down, for you or anyone else.

Coupeville speed demons Finley and Scotlyn Helm continue to tear up the track at the Monroe Speedway, piling up trophies and earning mad respect.

The duo was back at it this past weekend, punching the pedal through the metal while dad Jerry kept their turbo-charged rides hummin’ along.

Saturday was qualifying day, with Scotlyn missing out on setting a new track record by just four tenths of a second.

Lil’ sis, who has the most time behind the wheel of any of Lindsey Helm’s three children, qualified 2nd in her class, before storming to a win in the main event.

Older sibling Finley, who is headed to middle school in a few weeks, qualified in 5th, saw her ride get a complete suspension rebuild, then bounced back to claim a personal-best 3rd place finish.

Big sis Finley (left) joins the trophy show.

Returning to the track Sunday, the Helm sisters made a serious run at nabbing all the prizes on day two.

Finley racked up 2nd place in her heat, and a 3rd place in the main event, with Scotlyn roaring to another victory in her finale.

Riding on tires provided by a scholarship from Wilkie Excavating, the Helm sisters made Pops beam.

“These girls really worked hard this weekend,” Jerry Helm said. “Couldn’t be more proud of their fight and perseverance.”

“Eat my dust!”

Ryan King, seen here working in Coupeville in 2016, is the new head football coach at Mount Baker Junior High. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

Whidbey to Whatcom, and still killin’ it.

Coupeville grad Ryan King, a football captain who came back around to coach multiple sports at his alma mater, is the new head coach for the Mount Baker Junior High gridiron program.

An inductee into the Coupeville Sports Hall o’ Fame, the burly lineman was a key player for the Wolves football program in the early 2000’s.

King was a captain as a senior in 2006 and helped lead the 2005 CHS squad, the last Cow Town gridiron team to post a winning record until Coupeville finally broke back through to the winning side in 2019.

Once he moved into coaching, the former Wolf worked as an assistant football coach at both the middle school and high school levels between 2011-2017.

He was also a head coach for Coupeville Middle School girls’ basketball, where he worked with future high school stars like Chelsea Prescott, Genna Wright, and Mollie Bailey.

King was an assistant football coach in Mount Baker last fall, and now takes the reigns for a junior high program which feeds a high school which is consistently one of the best in a football-mad region.

“Very excited for this opportunity!” said the former Wolf.

There be Wolves on these trails. (Elizabeth Bitting photos)

The trails are alive with the sound of runners.

Coupeville athletes, both cross country harriers and ones hailing from other sports, have been busy as the summer has unfolded.

Under the stewardship of CHS running guru Elizabeth Bitting, the Wolves have been taking part in summer fun funs the past six weeks.

The events have drawn soccer booters, volleyball spikers, and cross country stars, with both current and alumni athletes represented.

“Whether they ran on the trails, UP the trails, around the oval, or on the roads, they were challenged every day, every week,” Bitting said.

“The SFR’s were capped off with a time trial on their respective home courses and some respectable times were ran,” she added.

“We are looking forward to the upcoming season.”

While we’re still knee-deep in summer, the start of fall sports is not that far off, with Wolf athletes encouraged to sign up using Final Forms now.

High school cross country practice begins August 21, with middle school runners debuting a week later.
