CMS girls run to team title

They roared in pink.

Wearing colored wrist bands to show support for the battle against breast cancer, Coupeville Middle School cross country runners came up big Thursday at a meet in Sultan.

The Wolf girls stunned perennial powerhouse Langley, winning a team title in a tight race to the finish.

Coupeville, which put five runners in the top 20, finished with 48 points to their next door neighbor’s 52.

On the boys side, Lakewood ran away with the team title, with Coupeville finishing fifth.

Langley did win both individual titles, with Sienna Nissen and Rowan Jung topping the girls and boys, respectively.

The meet drew 122 runners in all.

CMS coach Elizabeth Bitting was thrilled with the team win, and her runners got to enjoy a wild time along the way.

“They had an adventurous afternoon,” she said. “The course was wet and muddy. They crossed many bridges, and saw lots of salmon swimming in the streams.”

Play at home? If only…

Some day they will play a home match. Just not tomorrow.

Coupeville Middle School’s second bid to host a volleyball match is meeting with about as much success as effort one.

As in, no success at all.

And it’s still not the fault of the Wolves.

The season opener was postponed when Langley never showed.

Now, Wednesday’s home rumble with Granite Falls has been bumped due to a lack of refs.

It has been rescheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 26 and will be the season finale.

The CMS spikers have played three matches this season, all on the road.

The Wolves will try again next week, when they’re scheduled — for now at least — to host Northshore Christian Academy Oct. 18 and Sultan Oct. 20.

After that, CMS travels to Langley Oct. 25 before taking a second swing at hosting Granite.

Young Wolves scrappy and strong

“Today was by far the best we have played this season yet.”

While both Coupeville Middle School volleyball teams fell to powerhouse King’s on the road Monday, Wolf coach Cris Matochi came away quite pleased.

“Our team has improved substantially, and today we had a bunch of incredible plays,” he said. “We also have improved our skills, and the girls stepped in and fought really hard.

“Coach Katie (Kiel) and I are extremely proud of these girls, and I could’ve not asked for a better performance from them.”

Coupeville, which was wrapping up a three-game road trip to start the season, knew going in the task would be monumental.

Yet the Wolves never flinched while facing a private school juggernaut.

“King’s was a very well-trained and developed team, with tall and athletic players,” Matochi said.

“Before we stepped in to the court, I asked the girls to play like they are David against Goliath. They all followed that motto whole-heartedly!”

Matochi praised the entire roster of young spikers for their grit and determination, while casting a spotlight on a terrific trio.

“Teagan (Calkins), Brynn (Parker), and Tenley (Stuurmans) did an incredible job with setting, and every single player that came in to the game — whether for a specific role or to play around — was able to show improvement and tenacity.”

From here on out, the Wolves remain on Whidbey, with three-straight home matches, then a short trip down Island to face Langley in the season finale.

First up is Granite Falls, which comes to Coupeville this Wednesday, Oct. 13. Tipoff is 3:15 PM.

“We are extremely proud of these group of girls, and we are so excited to play the next matches and see what our future holds,” Matochi said.

“The biggest goal that Katie and I have is for the girls to have fun and play hard,” he added. “We accomplished those things so well today, and I’m so proud of them for fighting like David!”

CMS boys hoops stars first up

Basketball is on the horizon.

The Coupeville Middle School boys are the first to head into the gym, kicking off practice three weeks from today on Nov. 1.

The Wolves play an eight-game schedule over the course of a month, with four at home and four on the road.
