Cory Whitmore is a man on a mission.

In his two years at the helm of the Coupeville High School volleyball program, he’s guided the Wolves to back-to-back Olympic League titles and, this past fall, the spikers first trip to the state tourney since 2004.

Now, Whitmore, and his players, are launching their newest endeavor with the creation of the Wolf Pup Volleyball program.

Open to Coupeville Elementary School students in fifth and sixth grade, it’s a way to build the future of the program, in more ways than one.

“I really couldn’t be more excited about it,” Whitmore said. “It will serve as a small fundraiser for the high school program, but much more importantly, it will offer Coupeville kids the chance to have an introduction to volleyball, learn the basic skills and have a blast, at a much earlier age than is currently offered.

“One of the goals is to prepare players to step into the middle school program with more confidence, experience and love for volleyball,” he added.

The program kicks off Apr. 10 and runs Tuesdays and Thursdays through May 31. Sessions go from 4-6 PM in the middle school gym.

Practice will start off with a warm-up game, then skills and drills with players participating in their age group. Each night will close with a fun, competitive game.

Cost is $40 for a 16-session season, (which breaks down to a very reasonable $1.25 an hour) and will be paid on the first day of practice.

Parents should register their children by Apr. 4 at https://goo.gl/V4tdwF.

All proceeds go to help fund the high school volleyball program.

Whitmore is also looking for anyone interested in volunteering.

“Things like organizing after-practice snacks would be great,” he said. “Donated VolleyLite balls and even some “court helpers” for practices would make things run significantly smoother for the daily routine.”

One step away from high school ball, the Wolves playing for Dustin Van Velkinburgh are in 8th grade.

The little sisters are here, to lay claim to the court.

Coupeville’s girls SWISH basketball teams have been ultra-successful in recent seasons, and there seems little reason to think it won’t continue.

The young Wolves, many of whom have now been playing together for several seasons, are working their way towards the high school team, all with an eye on continuing the success those older squads have also enjoyed.

This year’s 8th grade SWISH team has already beaten Orcas Island and Friday Harbor, while losing thrillers to big-city foes from Anacortes, Blaine and Mount Vernon.

The Wolves, playing without several injured players, had late leads on two of those three teams.

“We are playing really well; just missing shots,” said coach Dustin Van Velkinburgh. “Should be a good group to watch throughout high school.”

Hunter Bronec (73) gets ready to snap the ball.

Oak Harbor is importing all its linemen from Coupeville these days.

Since there’s no youth football program in Cow Town, local residents have to trek up the Island if they want to play, and brothers Hurlee and Hunter Bronec are doing just that.

Wanderin’ cameraman John Fisken was busy shooting action Saturday when he caught the Wolves at work in disguise.

Lyla (back, far right) celebrates with her team.

The future of Wolf soccer is tearing up the pitch this summer.

Lyla Stuurmans, who’s headed into the fifth grade at Coupeville Elementary School (unless her pro contract comes through first), is spending her days playing with Northwest United FC out of Burlington.

That squad, and its Wolf sharpshooter, are 9-0 and have won both tournaments they’ve played in this summer.

NW United swept through the Crossfire Challenge this past weekend, winning five straight games over a four-day period.

Stuurmans and company pulled off three consecutive shut-outs to open the tourney and eventually outscored their rivals 12-2.

Lyla hails from a family with a long line of athletic success in Cow Town.

Dad Scott is a former CHS hoops star and mom Sarah is inducted in the Coupeville Sports Hall o’ Fame for her work as a coach.

If we listed off all the sports accomplishments of her aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents, we’d be here all day.

Fair warning to her family, better hang on to your trophies, cause Lyla is coming for all of them.

Oldenstadt lets rip.

Softball isn’t the only sport blossoming in Coupeville.

Baseball is also booming, with the Central Whidbey Little League Minors squad playing Friday for a perfect regular season.

The squad, coached by the hardball sage himself, Jon Roberts, is 12-0 headed into a 6 PM game at Rhododendron Park.

CWLL turns right around and plays in the Henry Pope Memorial Tournament down at South Whidbey this weekend.

The tourney is a six-team, double elimination event, which will be followed in the weeks to come by All-Stars and District play.

Two other Coupeville baseball players, fifth graders Zane Oldenstadt and Nathan Ginnings, have been traveling to Oak Harbor for their action this season.

With CWLL unable to field a Majors team due to a lack of players, the duo, who have been playing since they were five, are suiting up for the North Whidbey Little League Rays.

That squad, and their Coupeville hired guns, play in the Andrade Tournament June 3-10.

“They love baseball and have been having a great time playing with the Oak Harbor team and Coach Don Jenkins,” said Oldenstadt’s mom, Michelle Glass. “The tournament will be a great wrap to the good season they’ve had.”
