Run for Tammy!

Enjoy the outdoors and help one of Coupeville’s favorite Wolf Moms.

As Tammy Smith fights breast cancer, daughters Ciara and Ema have launched a number of fundraisers to help their mom.

Their primary goal has been to give her a professionally crafted wig — using their own hair — as her body battles through chemotherapy.

And now the Smith sisters are holding a Color Run 5K Saturday, Apr. 30.

The event will start at 9 AM at Coupeville’s Living Hope Foursquare Church (105 NW Broadway).

Kids, dogs, scooters, and strollers are welcome, and suggested donations are $10 for individuals and $25 for a group of four.

Run for the kids

Registration is open for this year’s edition of Race the Reserve.

The annual running event, which features a 5K, 10K, and half marathon, is set to go down Saturday, Aug. 13.

Or, if you can’t make it to Ebey’s National Historical Reserve that day, you can sign up and run a virtual race at your convenience.

Money raised by the fundraiser goes to support a safe and sober graduation night celebration for the Coupeville High School Class of 2023.

Community rallies for CES teacher

A popular teacher at Coupeville Elementary School has been diagnosed with leukemia, and her friends and co-workers are rallying around her.

Jackie Gelston teaches third grade at CES and was formerly employed in the South Whidbey School District.

She and husband Chris have two daughters — one in college and one attending middle school — and the family has been a vital part of the local 4H community.

As she begins her fight against cancer, Gelston is expected to be in the hospital for an extended period of time.

She will not be able to finish the 2021-2022 school year, and is not expected back in time to start the 2022-2023 campaign.

Fellow Coupeville teachers Corinn Parker and Christi Messner are spearheading campaigns to help their colleague and her family.

Parker launched a meal train, which had an overwhelming response, while Messner has posted a GoFundMe to allow people to help the Gelston family with medical costs.

“We are a small group of friends trying to help a fellow friend,” Messner wrote.

“We want to raise funds so she does not have to worry about the day-to-day expenses of her family and medical bills as she fights.

“We want to relieve as much stress from Jackie as we can.”

Support prairie powerhouse’s college volleyball dreams

You can help send Emma Smith to the next level.

The Coupeville High School grad is currently playing club volleyball while attending the University of Washington.

Now the Huskies are looking to raise money to send two squads to the season-ending National Collegiate Volleyball Federation tournament in Phoenix, Arizona April 14-16.

U-Dub spikers need $15,000 to cover hotels, travel expenses, and entry fees, and have already topped $3,000 in a short time.

This will be the first NCVF tourney in three years, as the pandemic erased the last two national championships.

While the University of Washington funds its NCAA D-I volleyball program, club sports rely on the goodwill and bucks of Husky supporters who contribute to fundraisers.

The club volleyball program features two traveling teams, which compete in the Pacific Collegiate Volleyball Association, and a third squad which provides opportunities to beginners.

Smith, a four-year varsity player at Coupeville High School, is on the Husky B team, having been selected after tryouts which involved 150+ players.

During her time at CHS, she was an All-Conference pick and qualified for state tourneys in both volleyball and track and field.

A ferocious hitter from the middle blocker position, Smith was a team captain, a stat leader, and a ray of sunshine on the prairie.

An inductee into the Coupeville Sports Hall o’ Fame, Emma kept her family’s proud athletic tradition in fine form, following in the large footsteps of aunt Joli, uncle Todd, dad Jesse, and Grandpa Steve.
