Don’t get into a leaning contest with Jacob Smith.

The Coupeville High School junior showed off his ability to stretch every last centimeter of his body while in motion Saturday, holding off a rival runner by .01 of a second to claim 3rd in the 200 at the 1A state track and field championships.

Running under scorching skies in Cheney, Smith shattered his own school record in the event, hitting the line in 22.41 seconds.

It was the second straight year he medaled in the event, and, with the lean, he improved a slot after finishing fourth in 2016.

Caleb Perry of King’s topped Keyhon Ross of Medical Lake to claim the title, reversing their finish from last season.

With both of those runners seniors, that moves Smith into the role of favorite heading into his senior campaign.

Smith’s sizzling finish was one of three medals the Wolves claimed Saturday, along with 5th place finishes in the 400 from sophomore Danny Conlisk and by the girls 4 x 200 relay squad.

It was the first state medal for Conlisk, whose time of 50.59 seconds was just .04 off of his PR set Friday in the prelims.

The CHS relay unit, made up of freshmen Maya Toomey-Stout and Mallory Kortuem, sophomore Lindsey Roberts and senior Lauren Grove, put together a 1:46.58 run.

That was just off the school mark of 1:46.41 set last year by Roberts, Grove, Sylvia Hurlburt and Makana Stone.

It earned the two freshmen their first medals, while the veteran duo each ran away with the fourth of their career.

That ties them for the fourth-most state medals won by a CHS girl, trailing just Makana Stone (7), Natasha Bamberger (6) and Yashmeen Knox (5).

With the three medals earned Saturday, added to Mitchell Carroll’s 5th place showing in the triple jump Friday, Coupeville exited Cheney with four medals.

The Wolf boys finished 19th in the team standings, second-best showing of any 1A Olympic League schools.

Port Townsend, which was led by Seren Dances winning state titles in the 110 and 300 hurdles as well as the long jump, finished third, while King’s won the team title.

Coupeville’s fellow Olympic League school, Chimacum, was 37th while Island rival South Whidbey finished 40th.

In the girls battle, Lakeside rolled to a team win, with South Whidbey (19th), Port Townsend (25th) and Coupeville (34th) well back.

Chimacum’s girls, and both Klahowya squads, failed to score any points this time around.

The Wolves had two other shots at adding to their team point totals, but Carroll and Ariah Bepler missed out on medals Saturday by the slimmest of margins.

Carroll, a senior, hit a PR of 20 feet, 5.25 inches in the long jump, finishing 10th, while Bepler, a junior, tied his PR of 5-10 in the high jump and claimed 9th.

Bepler’s final try at 6-00 (a height which would have earned him a medal) was super-close, but the pole refused to stay up after he brushed it slightly with his foot on the way over.

Still, it was an impressive state meet debut for the lanky one, who was competing in front of family including dad Mark, who claimed 4th in the discus for CHS back in 1986.

Everything’s set. Now they just wait.

The seeds for the 1A state track and field championships have been released, and the 10 Wolves headed to Cheney May 25-27 know how they stack up against their competition.

If the seeds hold, Coupeville is on target to bring home six medals (you need a top eight finish), three on either side of the gender divide.

But, as last year, when the Wolves won nine medals as a team, was a testament, no one can guarantee anything.

Anyone, from a #1 seed to a #17 seed, can trip, drop a baton, get ill or, conversely, have the meet of their dreams.

Wolves like Lindsey Roberts and Dalton Martin entered that 2016 meet ranked outside the top eight in an event, but finished on the victory stand, medal in hand.

It’s one meet to decide the fate of the track universe. Anything can happen.

But first, the cold hard numbers headed to Cheney:

Girls:

100 — Maya Toomey-Stout (11th) 12.96

200 — Toomey-Stout (10th) 26.76

100 Hurdles — Lindsey Roberts (8th) 15.97

4 x 200 Relay — Grove, Kortuem, Toomey-Stout, Roberts (6th) 1:47.67

Gentlemen, you’re on your way.

Tickets for a trip next weekend to Cheney (and the state 1A track and field meet therein) were punched left and right Saturday by Coupeville High School male athletes.

The Wolf boys won four of the six events they competed in at day two of the West Central District III meet in Renton, while advancing competitors in five events.

Jacob Smith and Danny Conlisk paced the Wolf attack, winning the 200 and 800, respectively.

Dropping his time by .08 of a second, Smith broke his own school record in his race.

The duo then teamed up with Mitchell Carroll and Henry Wynn to roar to victory in the day’s final event, the 4 x 400.

Toss in a huge win in the high jump for Ariah Bepler and a second-place showing in the long jump from Carroll, and the Coupeville boys were sizzlin’ Saturday.

Using quality over quantity, the Wolf boys finished fourth in the team standings. Bellevue Christian won the nine-team battle.

On the girls side, the high point of the day came from freshman Maya Toomey-Stout, who finished third in the 200 to qualify for state in a fourth event.

She was already going in the 100 and as a member of the 4 x 100 and 4 x 200 relay units.

The Wolf girls finished third as a team, just four points (109-105) off of second-place Bellevue Christian.

Charles Wright Academy finished atop the heap with 134 points.

Coupeville will send 10 athletes to the state meet May 26-27, and they are scheduled to compete in 14 events.

Four Wolves will vie in three events apiece in Cheney, while Toomey-Stout leads the pack, having qualified in four.

State-bound this year are:

Lauren Bayne (High Jump)
Ariah Bepler
(High Jump)
Mitchell Carroll
(Triple Jump, Long Jump, 4 x 4)
Danny Conlisk
(400, 800, 4 x 4)
Lauren Grove
(4 x 1, 4 x 2)
Mallory Kortuem
(4 x 1, 4 x 2)
Lindsey Roberts
(100 Hurdles, 4 x 1, 4 x 2)
Jacob Smith
(100, 200, 4 x 4)
Maya Toomey-Stout
(100, 200, 4 x 1, 4 x 2)
Henry Wynn
(4 x 4)

It’s the first trip to state for Bepler, Bayne, Kortuem and Toomey-Stout.

Of the six going back to state, Grove is making her third and final trip, while it’s the second trip for the other five.

Roberts became the first Coupeville girl in 116 years to win three medals at the same state track meet as a freshman last year (beating Makana Stone to the record by a half hour).

She finished with a 3rd (4 x 200), 4th (100 Hurdles) and 6th (4 x 100).

Grove also has three medals, stretched over two years. She joined Roberts on those relay teams last year, and also ran a leg for a 4 x 200 team that finished third her sophomore year.

In his first go-round last year, as a sophomore, Smith claimed a 4th place medal in the 200.

The other three state returnees — Carroll, Conlisk, and Wynn — are seeking their first medals.

Danny Conlisk will fly in the 400, 800 and 4 x 400 relay at districts May 19-20. (John Fisken photos)

Naika Hallam is ready to chuck the javelin, after winning the event at sub-districts.

We’ll need the big bus.

Coupeville High School will send 23 athletes to the West Central District 3 Track and Field Championships May 19-20, the last stop before the state meet.

Of those 15 girls and eight boys, 13 are slated to participate in more than one event.

Leading the way are freshman Maya Toomey-Stout, sophomore Lindsey Roberts, junior Jacob Smith and senior Mitchell Carroll, who all qualified in two individual events and on two relay teams.

The Wolves didn’t know the final lineup for sure until the Nisqually League wrapped up its league championship meet Saturday afternoon.

The top three finishers at the Olympic League’s Sub-District meet were guaranteed berths, but anyone who finished #4 had to wait a week to see how their times or distances compared to the #5 finisher out of the Nisqually.

Of the 12 Coupeville entries which finished fourth at sub-districts, seven will advance.

From the five which didn’t make it, the two which sting the most are Lucy Sandahl in the 1600 and Jacob Martin in the long jump.

Sandahl, a freshman, ran a 5:56.31, but the Nisqually #5 — Erica Julian of Charles Wright Academy — nipped her by .47 of a second, finishing in 5:55.84.

Martin’s failure to advance reflects the cold cruelty of postseason action, where it becomes “What have you done for me lately?”

The CHS senior opened the season with a jump of 20 feet, seven inches, which still stands as the ninth-best performance in 1A this season.

But he only sailed 18-06.75 at sub-districts, his season-low, to finish #4, while the Nisqually #5 — Tyquan Coleman of Cascade Christian — PR’d at 18-08.

So yep, thanks to the quirks of postseason qualifying, even though Martin’s PR is nearly two feet longer than Coleman’s, the lesser jumper advances.

They had themselves quite a day.

The Coupeville High School track and field team dominated Saturday at the 1A Olympic League Sub-District meet in Poulsbo.

Where to start?

At the top, where the Wolf girls ended up, and they will add a plaque to the school’s Wall of Fame.

Paced by freshman Maya Toomey-Stout and senior Skyler Lawrence, Coupeville collected five wins and 12 PRs while advancing at least 13 girls on to Districts.

With 102 points, the Wolves topped Klahowya (93), Port Townsend (50) and Chimacum (19) to reign as 1A League/Sub-District champs.

CHS finished 5th overall (out of 11 teams) in the Olympic League Championships.

That scoring system pitted the four 1A schools against the seven 2A schools which also sit under the league’s banner.

Toomey-Stout, who won the 100 and 200, while also running a leg on a victorious 4 x 200 relay team, was picked as the 1A Female Track Athlete of the Meet.

Lawrence, who claimed first in shot put and second in discus, was the 1A Female Field Athlete of the Meet.

Naika Hallam rounded out the female Wolf winners, capturing the javelin title.

On the boys side, CHS finished second in Sub-Districts, 5th in the OLC.

Port Townsend won the 1A boys title with 93 points, while Klahowya (75) narrowly edged Coupeville (74). Chimacum (19) was a distant fourth.

Ginormous 2A school North Kitsap won both team titles in the OLC tally.

The Coupeville boys were led by sprinter Jacob Smith, who was tabbed as the 1A Male Track Athlete of the Meet.

He won the 100 and 200 (a race in which his winning 1A time was better than any 2A runner) and ran a leg on a triumphant 4 x 400 unit.

Super sophomore Danny Conlisk joined Smith as a three-time winner, capturing the 400 and 800 in addition to being on the relay squad.

Ariah Bepler (High Jump) and Mitchell Carroll (Triple Jump) rounded out the Wolf boys who won league titles.

Carroll won his event by edging Port Townsend’s transcendent Seren Dances, who won three events (Long Jump, 110 Hurdles, 300 Hurdles).

Coupeville is off until May 19-20, when it clashes with the best of the Nisqually League at the District meet in Renton.

Top three finishers from Sub-Districts are guaranteed a berth at Districts, the last stop before state.

For those who finished fourth in Poulsbo, they have to wait a week until the Nisqually League holds its Sub-District meet.

With five 1A schools to the Olympic League’s four, the Nisqually is guaranteed four slots at districts.

The #4 finisher in each event from the OL will be compared to the #5 finisher in the NL, with the better time or distance getting the eighth and final slot to districts.

Coupeville had 12 fourth-place finishes, the most shocking coming in the girls 4 x 100.

That relay unit, which is ranked #9 in all of 1A, had a baton drop and scrambled to recover against teams they would have normally thrashed.

For now, CHS knows it will advance a minimum of 20 athletes (13 girls and seven boys), with six of them having qualified in three events.
