Nearly 1,600 runners put shoe to pavement Sunday during the big four races at the Whidbey Island Marathon.

And, with apologies to Susanna Orr of Anchorage, Alaska and everyone else from far-flung locales, the race itself will have to be your reward, because I’m not printing all your names here.

Well, Miss Orr obviously made it … but you get my point.

The names below belong to those who openly claimed Coupeville as their hometown (since this is Coupeville Sports and not Anchorage Running Times).

Or, in a couple of cases, folks who tried to slip through by just putting US under hometown but had recognizable names.

Nice try, Sage Renninger, nice try.

Anyway, if I missed you, it’s either because you hid under a “fake” hometown or I’m just blind. One of the two…

Bayne

Lauren Bayne doesn’t actually jump over the hurdles. She just glides from start to finish, never really coming down.

A PR in every event.

Well, maybe not every event, but a lot of them for sure, as the Coupeville High School track and field squad set 26 individual marks Saturday.

Having jumped across to the mainland, camera gear in hand, travelin’ photo man John Fisken clicked away madly at the Port Angeles Invitational, and the photos above are courtesy him.

Lauren Bayne (John Fisken photos)

Lauren Bayne, a young woman of many talents. (John Fisken photos)

Lauren Bayne is a bit of a Renaissance woman.

The Coupeville High School sophomore, who celebrates a birthday today, is a whirlwind, always up to something, and always doing a pretty spectacular job at whatever she does.

On the soccer pitch she’s one of the hardest-working Wolves, a lock-down defender who helped anchor Coupeville’s often-stingy defense.

Put her on the track oval and there is little she can’t accomplish.

During her freshman season, Bayne Train, Jr. competed in eight different events, going all the way to districts in both the 3200 and high jump.

Once there she PR’d in the running event and just missed tying her best mark — which she had set while winning the event at sub-districts — while jumping.

When she’s not busy blazing a trail of athletic success, much like older brother Josh, Lauren can be seen snapping pics of fellow Wolf athletes.

Or working tirelessly behind the scenes at Booster Club events like the annual Crab Feed.

Or hanging out with her 10,000 friends.

Bayne is a bright, blazing ray of sunshine in Coupeville, and she comes off as smart, well-spoken, deeply caring to those she holds close and a young woman whose potential is limitless.

I always figure we should get in good with people like Lauren when they’re just starting, so that when she’s ruling the world, she might remember us benevolently.

So happy birthday, Miss Bayne.

I hope your cake day is a sweet one, but, then again, I hope all of your days are that way.

You make us better as a town for your presence, and I hope you always know how highly we all think of you.

Crab, crab as far as the eye could see.

And desserts, and some adult beverages and salads flying through the air, they were all present Saturday.

The occasion was the Coupeville Booster Club’s annual Crab Dinner and Auction, which brings in bucks to help support Wolf athletics.

Current CHS stars were hard at work behind the scenes, former greats were on the floor, bidding and schmoozing, and travelin’ photo man John Fisken was working the room, camera in hand.

Lauren Bayne set PRs in the , winning the 3200. (John Fisken photo)

Wolf freshman Lauren Bayne set PRs in the 3200, javelin and 300 hurdles Thursday, winning the 3200. (John Fisken photo)

Lauren Bayne claimed the spotlight as her own.

With three of its fastest runners (Makana Stone, Sylvia Hurlburt and Kirsten Pelroy) not competing Thursday in Sequim, the Coupeville High School girls’ track squad turned to its youngsters for its highlights.

Bayne, a speedy freshman, set PRs in all three of her events, while claiming the only victory of the day for the Wolves in the 3200.

She won that event by nearly 16 seconds.

Abby Parker tied Bayne with three PRs, while Delaney Armstrong, Connor Thompson, Mitchell Losey and Jesse Hester all had two apiece.

The meet drew seven schools, with the host school taking top honors in both team races.

Coupeville finished fifth on the girls side and sixth on the boys.
