Thursdays belong to the future.

Having scrambled at the last second to put together its own juniors softball squad, Central Whidbey Little League will kick off a 16-game schedule this coming week, with their home games played at Coupeville High School’s field.

Central Whidbey will play Anacortes, North Whidbey and South Whidbey in the four-team league, with home games on seven of the next eight Thursdays.

The team consists primarily of eighth graders from Coupeville Middle School, such as Scout Smith and Maya Toomey-Stout, with a few seventh graders like Mollie Bailey and Chelsea Prescott sprinkled across the roster.

Led by head coach Charlotte Young and assistant Connie Lippo, the squad will revive the Venom name.

Current high school stars like Katrina McGranahan, Sarah Wright and Lauren Rose went undefeated and earned a trip to state while wearing that name on their uniforms two years ago under Kevin McGranahan.

Last year, with most of that squad moving up to CHS, the few scattered remaining players had to travel to other towns to play.

Now the Venom is back and ready to attack again.

The schedule (all games start at 6 PM):

Tues-Apr. 12 @ South Whidbey
Thur-Apr. 14 North Whidbey
Tues-Apr. 19 @ Anacortes
Thur-Apr. 21 Anacortes
Tues-Apr. 26 @ North Whidbey
Thur-Apr. 28 South Whidbey
Tues-May 3 North Whidbey
Thur-May 5 @ South Whidbey
Tues-May 10 @ Anacortes
Thur-May 12 Anacortes
Tues-May 17 @ North Whidbey
Thur-May 19 South Whidbey
Tues-May 24 @ South Whidbey
Thur-May 26 North Whidbey
Tues-May 31 @ Anacortes

Morgan Pease

Morgan Pease (left), who was a savage on defense, ripping down rebounds and rejecting shots, goes to the floor to deny Chimacum.

Morgan Pease is gonna hurt folks.

And I mean that in the best way possible.

The Coupeville Middle School 7th grader was maybe the brightest star Thursday, as the Wolves opened their new season.

Ripping down rebounds, slamming Chimacum shots into the stands, Pease revived memories of CHS defensive legend Lexie Black, who still holds state tournament records a decade after graduation.

Take Pease, toss in quicksilver, sweet-shooting Chelsea Prescott, relentless ball-hawk Avalon Renninger and feisty floor leaders like Scout Smith and Maya Toomey-Stout and the future is a bright one for Wolf girls basketball.

On hand to catch opening night action was travelin’ photo man John Fisken.

Now back from pulling extensive duty at the state wrestling tourney in Tacoma, he delivers the photos above.

And so it begins.

The next wave of Coupeville girls hoops stars laid claim to the courts Monday with the start of a new season of middle school basketball.

A mix of established veterans like Maya Toomey-Stout, Melia Welling and Scout Smith, mixed in with young guns like Chelsea Prescott, Genna Wright and the heir to the Photo Bomb Queen throne, Mollie Bailey, are hard at work under the watchful eyes of coaches Bob Martin and Ryan King.

Their first game is Thursday, Feb. 18, when they host Chimacum (3:15 tip).

That kicks off a 10-game schedule in which the Wolves are home every Thursday and on the road every Monday.

Chelsea

Maya

Prescott will join grizzled vets like 8th grader Maya Toomey-Stout.

There are some new spikers in town.

High school volleyball has already been going for a bit, but Coupeville Middle School officially kicks off a new season Thursday, when the Wolves play host to Chimacum at 3:30 PM.

CMS has 26 players on its roster currently, with an almost perfect mix of eighth graders and seventh graders.

Among the names to watch, returning stars like Scout Smith, Zoe Trujillo and Maya Toomey-Stout.

And, while I don’t have much of a feel for what the Wolf seventh graders have to offer yet, two names pop out.

Genna Wright is the final child from a family of top-drawer athletes, following in the footsteps of older siblings Aaron and Sarah, while Chelsea Prescott has already made a name for herself as a little league baseball pitcher.

The rosters, as they stand now:

8th grade:

Ashleigh Battaglia
Luci Coleburn
Hannah Davidson
Natalie Hollrigel
Emma Mathusek
Jillian Mayne
Cassidy Moody
Lucy Sandahl
Scout Smith
Maya Toomey-Stout
Zoe Trujillo
Raven Vick
Willow Vick
Melia Welling

7th grade:

Megan Behan
Kylie Chemikoff
Alexis Czarnik
Emily Fieldler
Ivy Leedy
Catherine Lhamon
Jaimee Masters
Lacy McCraw-Shirron
Morgan Pease
Chelsea Prescott
Savannah Smith

Eight wins in one afternoon for the most electrifying middle school track team in all the land. (Bob Martin photo)

If Lindsey Roberts is the new Makana Stone, then Danny Conlisk is the new Lindsey Roberts.

Roberts continued her perfect start to her 8th grade track season, ripping off two more wins Wednesday at a four-team meet in Shoreline, but Conlisk went her one better.

While Roberts cruised to wins in both sprints (200) and sprinting while evading obstacles (100 hurdles), Conlisk rolled, snatching victories in the 100, 200 and 1600.

Together, the duo accounted for five of Coupeville Middle School’s eight wins.

Seventh grade hurdlers Cassidy Moody and Jean Lund-Olsen and eighth grade high jumper Chris Battaglia also came away with top of the podium performances.

Langley swept both team titles on the girls side of the competition, while King’s (8th) and Northshore Christian (7th) split the boys titles.
