Run for the sun

The runners returned.

Whidbey Island once again became a hub for people getting out and putting one foot in front of another Saturday, as the Ragnar Road Northwest Passage 2021 capped its two-day, one-night event.

The trek, featuring teams of runners, started near the Canadian border in Blaine and finished in the wilds of Langley.

It’s the ferry life for them.

Running season never ends.

Somewhere, right now, there’s a Ragnar event going on, of that I’m sure.

The distance relay events, which draw a wide range of runners, spring up every time you turn around.

Generally the way you notice is when you hear the Viking horns outside your bedroom window at 6 AM on a Saturday … but I digress.

Packs of Coupeville runners are off at Crystal Mountain Ski Resort Friday and Saturday for the Ragnar Trail-Rainier event.

One such team, featuring CHS runners Lauren Bayne, Jacob Smith, Lucy Sandahl, Abby Parker and Danny Conlisk as well as CMS coach Bob Martin and Wolf mom Deb Smith, is seen in the photos above.

Run, Sylvia, run!!

Hurlburt is joined by CMS track coach (and fellow runner) Elizabeth Bitting.

Well, sleeping in was apparently not an option.

With another Ragnar Relay Series run barreling right past my front porch, bringing with it early morning whooping and yelling the likes of which haven’t been heard since a Pokemon Go-addled idiot ran across an interstate highway in pursuit of Mewtwo, I’m up.

So, I’ll use my time well, which basically means poaching pics from Sylvia Hurlburt.

It’s kind of our thing.

So, thanks to the ever-industrious Miss Hurlburt, I present a smattering of Ragnar pics for your perusal.

Now, to the rest of you, shut up and get off my lawn.

But maybe don’t go play in traffic like the Pokezombies.

Vote big! Win big!!

You, yes you, can win Sherry Roberts and friends new t-shirts.

It’s simple.

A pack of local runners (others include CMS track coach Elizabeth Bitting and Wolf mom Deb Smith) who compete in the Ragnar Trail Relay series are also taking part in the SweatVac t-shirt designing competition.

Whichever team gets the most votes nabs eight shirts featuring their design, which is a cool $256 worth of merchandise.

Bitting’s design for the Sasquatchettes is currently sitting in first place in a seven-way race that ends July 15, but by a razor-thin margin.

Time for Wolf Nation to step up and put our runners over the top. Waaaaay over the top.

Facebook only allows one vote per person, but if we all vote and spread the word, there is no poll we can not utterly destroy.

History bears that out.

Run long! Run strong!!

Wynn and Smith wait for their next leg.

“Fly! Fly like the wind!!”

And he was gone with the wind.

They came. They saw. They ran all day and night (and then some).

Tons of runners took part in the annual Northwest Passage this weekend, a 200-mile jaunt from the Canadian border at Blaine down to Whidbey Island.

Part of the Ragnar Relay Series, the event drew numerous runners from Coupeville, some of whom are featured in the photos above.

Paced by Coupeville High School sophomores Jacob Smith and Henry Wynn and cheered on by mascot Cheridan Eck, the Wolf Pack overcame the heat and stayed strong until the end.
