They turned out in force.

Official stats show 277 runners competing Saturday in the annual Race the Reserve, the biggest fundraiser for Coupeville High School’s next graduating class.

The 5K was the most-popular event, attracting 107 competitors.

Meanwhile, the 10K snagged 99 runners, and the half marathon featured 71 people ambling across the prairie.

Two of the day’s three winners have a direction connection to Coupeville Middle and High School cross country.

Andrew Wyman, husband of CMS harrier coach Amber Wyman, claimed the crown in the half marathon.

George Spear, who will be a Wolf sophomore this fall, outran the field to win the 10K, while the 5K title was copped by Levi DeBoard, who seems to have no connection to the Wolf running programs.

There be Wolves on these trails. (Elizabeth Bitting photos)

The trails are alive with the sound of runners.

Coupeville athletes, both cross country harriers and ones hailing from other sports, have been busy as the summer has unfolded.

Under the stewardship of CHS running guru Elizabeth Bitting, the Wolves have been taking part in summer fun funs the past six weeks.

The events have drawn soccer booters, volleyball spikers, and cross country stars, with both current and alumni athletes represented.

“Whether they ran on the trails, UP the trails, around the oval, or on the roads, they were challenged every day, every week,” Bitting said.

“The SFR’s were capped off with a time trial on their respective home courses and some respectable times were ran,” she added.

“We are looking forward to the upcoming season.”

While we’re still knee-deep in summer, the start of fall sports is not that far off, with Wolf athletes encouraged to sign up using Final Forms now.

High school cross country practice begins August 21, with middle school runners debuting a week later.

Paige Spangler (right), here running with fellow coach Elizabeth Bitting, competed in Sunday’s Chicago Marathon.

She leads by example.

Coupeville High School cross country coach Paige Spangler wasn’t with her team at this weekend’s Nike Hole in the Wall Cross Country Invitational.

That’s because the harrier coach, a dedicated runner herself, was halfway across the United States, camped out in Illinois.

Why?

Because Sunday morning Spangler was one of 40,000 runners to hit the line at the Chicago Marathon, the fourth-largest race in the country by number of finishers.

The Wolf running guru completed her 26.2-mile trek in five hours, 17 minutes, 14 seconds, placing her in the top 2,300 in her age group.

Now, with the marathon experience to guide her, Spangler will return to Whidbey Island, where she’ll lead CHS to the Northwest 2B/1B League Championships Oct. 20 in Mount Vernon.

Chase and Rainy Simpson and their kids enjoy a family day out.

Take a picture. It’ll last longer.

We’re two days past the 2022 edition of Race the Reserve, but you can immortalize the moment by snapping up prints thanks to a bevy of camera clickers.

The annual event, which features a half-marathon, 10K, and 5K, is the biggest fundraiser for Coupeville High School’s senior class, and all photo purchases add to the money raised.
