Pray for David King.

The Coupeville High School girls’ basketball coach is down in Ocean Shores for four days, one lone man adrift in a sea of 20 women.

Wife/assistant coach/team photographer Amy King and 19 Wolf hoops stars are his companions, as Coupeville takes part in their annual summer hoops camp.

Long hours are the norm, with Coupeville playing between 16-18 games this year.

Having an unusually large number of players making the commitment this time, the surging Wolves, two-time defending 1A Olympic League champs, are fielding both a varsity and JV squad.

Each team opened with two games Monday, another three Tuesday, play twice Wednesday (with some time set aside to hit the beach) and then close Thursday with at least one and possibly two more games.

With tons of teams in play, the earliest start time has been 7 AM, and the latest midnight, though (so far) the Wolves have not gone earlier than 8 AM or later than 10 PM.

Toss in injuries — two CHS players have gone down, one after having her head landed on, another with a tweaked finger, though both were able to return later — and the coaches are busy bees.

“It’s long days,” said David King, who plans to sleep for a month upon returning home. “Other than that, we are all surviving.”

If it’s summer, it’s time to go to camp.

A whopping 19 players accompanied Coupeville High School girls’ basketball coaches David and Amy King to Ocean Shores this year and they’re knee deep in hoops.

With the Wolves fielding both a varsity and JV team at the annual hoops extravaganza, it’s four games a day (at least), with start times as early as 8 AM and as late as 10 PM.

As the two-time defending 1A Olympic League champs work on their game, Amy King and her camera are busy documenting the behind the scenes activity for us.

It’s a win-win.

Get your car washed, help fuel the most successful sports program in Central Whidbey.

The Coupeville High School girls’ basketball squad, which has won back-to-back 1A Olympic League titles (while never dropping a league game) is back at it Saturday, soap and scrub brush in hand.

The Wolves will be at Whidbey Island Bank on N. Main Street in Coupeville from 10 AM-2 PM, staring down any and all dirty vehicles.

Maybe not my science project of a ramblin’ wreck (there’s no hope for that one), but everything else is fair game.

But what if your car is already clean?

Not a problem, as they will be accepting donations as well.

Money raised will go to help pay for the Wolves to attend summer basketball camp.

With the CHS hoops program booming under the leadership of round-ball gurus David and Amy King, an all-time high of 19 girls are camp-bound this year.

Heather Nastali was one of 10 letter winners.

Want to help one of Coupeville’s best and brightest?

Then now’s a great time, as Wolf sophomore Heather Nastali needs a little financial bump to reach an important goal.

Nastali, who’s a cheerleader and softball slugger at CHS, has been raising money for summer cheer camp.

She’s raised half the $400 she needs by mowing lawns, weeding gardens and taking care of people’s pets.

Now, as she closes in on her goal of joining her teammates, Nastali has started a GoFundMe page to get up over the top.

The camp, put on by the United Cheer Association, teachers high school cheerleaders new routines and cheers, with an emphasis on preaching safety when stunting.

Nastali will be in her second year on the Wolf cheer squad, but this would be her first chance to attend summer camp with the team.

She has two weeks to raise the remainder of the money, as it has to be turned in by May 1.

Get your spike on.

It’s never too soon to start planning for summer.

While we’re only in the first weekend of April, registration is open for flag football and volleyball being offered later this year through the Coupeville Boys and Girls Club.

The football league, which is open to children in grades 3-6, is free, and will take place May 6.

Volleyball camp, which will be split for two groups (K-2 and 3-8), runs June 24-25 and costs $25 and $50, respectively.

To find out more, take a gander at the extra-helpful pics above, which contain most of the pertinent info.
