Kids tennis camp set for new CHS courts

Help test out the new tennis courts.

With brand-new playing surfaces just about finished next to the Coupeville High School gym, CHS coaches are planning to hold a tennis camp July 8-12.

The event is a fundraiser for Wolf tennis, while also offering young players in grades 3-8 a chance to get an introduction to the game, or finetune their skills.

Deadline to sign up is June 14.

“So excited to share our knowledge of tennis with the community!” said CHS net coach Starla Seal.

“Looking forward to introducing tennis to our youth and getting them involved at an early age in such a great sport.

“The more opportunities the youth can have the better, especially at this age when they are trying different sports out and getting a feel for which one best suits them!”

Pro hoops stars train young Wolves

The world traveler came home and brought some international flavor with her.

Coupeville grad Makana Stone, who has been playing professional basketball in England and Norway the past couple years, is back at her teenage stomping grounds for a few days.

Working with fellow pro hoops star Jaron Kirkley, the former Wolf ace is putting on basketball skills camps for a new generation of players in the CHS gym.

Last week, it was players in elementary school, while this week her charges hail from middle and high school.

Regardless of the age bracket, they all are here to learn, and Stone is here to give back to a community she has inspired for many seasons.

Hoops hotshot returns, teaches next gen stars

God’s chosen sport is booming in Cow Town.

NBC Camps came to Coupeville in late July, with former Wolf hoops sensation Caleb Meyer among the coaches, drawing close to 40 players to the three-day skills event.

The camp, open to kids 8-12, offered participants 18 hours of training.

The appearance by Meyer, who played a crucial role in the CHS boys winning a league title and advancing to state during his senior season in 2022, was a special treat for the future Wolves.

And for his former coach, Brad Sherman, who was hanging around the gym snapping pics and watching the oldest of his four boys, Brady, fine-tune his own hardwood skills.

“Caleb was one of the four coaches on staff at the camp,” said the CHS hoops guru. “That was fun to see.”

Bring the spirit, bring the work

The gym already echoes with the sound of spirit.

The first game doesn’t arrive until Sept. 1, but the Coupeville High School cheer squad is already hard at work, taking part in summer camps.

A recent two-day event put on by the Spirit of Cheer booster club brought former Wolf coach Sylvia Arnold and international superstar Mica Shipley back to the CHS gym.

After the camp, the high-flying Shipley returns to Eastern Washington University, where she’ll be in her fourth season as an NCAA D-I cheerleader.

Working with renowned stunt coach Rob Webb, the former Wolves provided inspiration and expertise to a new generation of cheer stars, which you can see in the pics above and below.
