“Really? You’re gonna take my picture … again?” (Valen Trujillo photo)

Kyla Briscoe is a walking, talking ray of sunshine.

The Coupeville High School junior, who celebrates a birthday today, is the same now as when she was, say, five years old.

She’s taller, certainly, and a far more polished athlete now than she was as a kindergartner, that’s true.

But she remains as friendly, warm, and irrepressible as she has always been, a genuinely kind and caring young woman who is fiercely loyal to her family and friends.

Kyla has a backbone of steel, which you can see as she deals with the disappointment of missing volleyball season.

Having shredded her ankle during a summer camp in Bellingham, she’s on crutches and missing out on a final chance to play alongside big sis Tiffany.

As hard as the ordeal has to be, Kyla has remained front and center with the spikers, showing up for practices and games, staying a vital part of a team for which she lettered her first two years.

The hope is she will be able to return for basketball season, rejoining a squad she helped take to state last year.

If not, if the rehab stretches on longer than anticipated, Wolf b-ball coaches David and Amy King plan to keep Briscoe just as involved as volleyball coach Cory Whitmore has done.

And why not?

Having Kyla’s energy, good humor and quiet wit around to brighten up her team’s day is huge.

Whether she’s playing or helping out, she is invaluable.

That carries over off the court, as well.

I’ve known Kyla most of her life, and she and Tiffany are as rock-solid a duo as they come.

You mess with one, you better be ready to mess with the other, as on-court foes have discovered, because they don’t back down when defending their sister.

Highly-intelligent, well-spoken (though generally soft-spoken … in public, at least), Kyla should make parents Amy and Rich very proud.

She is one of the best and brightest we have in Wolf Nation, and, as much as she’s probably blushing right now and dismissively waving away the praise, she truly deserves it.

So, from all of us, happy birthday Kyla, and may you have a speedy recovery.

There are a lot of stars, but you, Miss Briscoe, are a true superstar.

Coupeville High School spikers and coaches head off for a day of volleyball. (Cory Whitmore photo)

“We got better today – simple as that.”

Coming off of an opening night win, the Coupeville High School volleyball squad got valuable floor time Saturday where they could focus more on development than wins and losses.

Competing in the six-team South Whidbey Invite, the Wolves still did pretty darn well record-wise, winning four of six matches in pool play.

But for Wolf coach Cory Whitmore, development, especially for his younger players, trumped all on this day.

“We faced and overcame some challenges that will translate to valuable experience for league and playoff matches,” he said.

With key varsity players Ashley Menges and Ally Roberts absent (they’re competing in horse events at the state fair), freshman Scout Smith got the call-up to the big leagues.

And Scoutosaurus Rex responded in appropriate fashion.

“I’m excited that we got Scout A LOT of varsity playing time as the other setter,” Whitmore said. “She took half of the sets today and really stepped up and rose to the speed and physicality that varsity requires.

“I was impressed with her serving (again) but more so with the ease in which she took to running the offense with older teammates,” he added. “She looked comfortable out there and that’s not to be taken lightly.”

The Wolves (1-0) return to regular match play with back-to-back home bouts this coming week.

Chimacum is up first, coming to Whidbey Tuesday (5:00 JV/6:15 varsity) for the 1A Olympic League opener, followed by 2A Sequim Wednesday (4:15/5:30) for a non-conference match.

Peytin Vondrak (John Fisken photo)

Sports are a new opportunity.

Having made the jump from Pensacola, Florida to Coupeville with her family, new Wolf sophomore Peytin Vondrak is making new friends and finding her niche in a new town with a little help from volleyball.

While she’s new to the sport, she jumped right in and was an enthusiastic presence when on the floor in the JV squad’s straight-sets win over Mount Vernon Christian Tuesday on opening night.

“I’ve never actually played volleyball,” Vondrak said. “I just started I guess and I started because I wanted to meet new people.

“I’ve always been interested in playing it even though I’m not all that good.”

In her short time at CHS, Vondrak has taken quickly to volleyball and her new teammates.

“I enjoy being able to hit the ball,” she said. “I also enjoy being on the team with such amazing girls. They’re all so nice and friendly.”

Vondrak is obviously a work in progress on the court, but she’s been pleasantly surprised to see growth in herself already.

Which just encourages her to keep working hard.

“I guess I would have to say hitting and blocking (are my strengths),” she said. “I really need to work on a lot of things, especially serving.

“My arms are really weak so I always hit the ball into the net,” Vondrak added. “I just need to focus on becoming a stronger and better player.”

Away from the volleyball court, she “loves shopping, watching movies and hanging out with friends” and enjoys her math and art classes.

While not a fan of country music, she’ll listen to just about anything else, and hails the Amanda Bynes soccer rom com “She’s the Man” as a personal favorite.

Vondrak, who also plans to play softball in the spring (“I’ve never played, so that will be interesting…”) wants to continue to improve her volleyball skills, while always staying focused on her academic performance.

“My goals would be becoming a better team player and getting closer to the girls,” she said. “Goals for my high school career would be to pass my classes!!”

Her family (younger sister Madelyn has turned out for middle school volleyball) is a big part of her life, a tight-knit bunch she can always look to for help and guidance.

“Definitely my dad and older sister (help me),” Vondrak said. “They always give good advice and point me to the right direction.

“But my whole family has also shaped me into the person I am.”
