Catherine Lhamon waits for no one.

The Coupeville High School sophomore is in just her first year of running cross country, but she’s already making inroads on being one of the best the state has to offer.

With one regular-season meet left on the schedule – this Thursday at King’s — Lhamon is the only Wolf to be currently ranked in the top 50 at the league, district and state level.

Teammates Danny Conlisk and Alana Mihill hit the first two of those criteria, while Sam Wynn is among the best in the North Sound Conference.

Where Coupeville’s top runners stand in 5,000 meter races as we wind our way towards the postseason:

Allison Nastali gets cheers from a teammate as she flies across the course.

The Wolves arrived at Lakewood High School early, then hung out in the fog.

“OK, here’s the plan … we’re gonna run really fast, and they’re not gonna catch us.”

There is big, and then there is BIG.

Saturday was all about the capital letters, as 22 Coupeville Middle and High School cross country runners participated in the biggest harrier invite on the West coast.

The Nike Hole in the Wall Cross Country Invitational at Lakewood High School featured more than 5,000 runners, with schools from Alaska, Oregon, California and British Columbia joining their Washington counterparts.

“The atmosphere was ELECTRIC!!!!!,” was how CHS coach Natasha Bamberger, a lifelong big-race runner, described the scene.

The day started early, with the Wolves on the bus and on the road by 6 AM.

“It was an EARLY start!,” said CMS coach Elizabeth Bitting. “We had quiet time on the ride out and most fell asleep.

“Once at the big event it was quiet and foggy, as we were the first of many schools to arrive.”

After suffering in the fall weather at their last meet, Wolf runners came prepared this time around, bringing gloves, running tights and long sleeve undershirts.

The middle school squad sent 15 runners into the heat of battle, while the CHS team numbered seven strong, just missing Kyle Burnett, who was unable to attend the event.

While the Wolves were a speck in a vast sea of runners, both Coupeville coaches were thrilled with what they saw on the course.

“It was an amazing opportunity to compete against all these schools our first year,” Bitting said. “It makes me so proud to see our runners pushing themselves, driving their elbows, extending their strides, passing runners and always having a smile on their face.

“What coach wouldn’t be proud!”

While all 15 middle school runners set PR’s, maybe the biggest story was Helen Strelow, who carved two minutes and seven seconds off her previous best.

The high school runners were just as on point, with Bamberger calling it “the team’s best race yet,” in which “every runner rose to the occasion.”

At the front of the high school pack, sophomore Catherine Lhamon smashed her PR by almost a minute and half, dropping from 22:03 to 20:35.

“My goal has been to get her under 20 for the season, which she and her mom thought would be impossible,” Bamberger said. “She is well on her way in the next couple of weeks!!

“All the way down the line again with PR’s for the team!”

Coupeville’s Danny Conlisk ran a season-best Thursday, claiming a top 10 finish at a cross country meet in Langley. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

Small in numbers, but big in results.

Four of Coupeville High School’s six active cross country runners set PR’s Thursday in Langley, with two claiming especially impressive finishes.

Running at a six-team North Sound Conference meet at South Whidbey High School, Wolf senior Danny Conlisk and freshman Alana Mihill both cracked the top 10.

Mihill, who was running solo with Catherine Lhamon off the Island for the day, set a PR, while Conlisk nailed a season-best covering the 5,000 meter course.

Fellow Wolves TJ Rickner, Uriah Kastner and Chris Ruck also set personal records.

“It was a great race and day,” said Coupeville coach Natasha Bamberger.

Danny was with the top four runners from South Whidbey throughout most of the race and had an amazing finish,” she added. “Alana a great surprise; took off after the front pack, stayed in contact, pulling herself up.

“Many coaches from other teams cheering her, the lonely Wolf girl out there today.”

Bamberger also praised senior Uriah Kastner, who was a “workhorse, passing runners on the toughest hill sections.”

Coupeville, which has its first in-school cross country program after a two-decade break, gets a chance Saturday to run with the big boys (and girls).

The Wolves are off to Lakewood High, where they’ll be joined by the Coupeville Middle School harriers, for the Nike Hole in the Wall Invitational.

That event is expected to draw in as many as 5,300 runners across 13 races.

“It will be a great day for the team,” Bamberger said. “What a stacked season of huge invitationals.

“These kids are not getting a cushy start. They are having to work for everything they get.”

Having nabbed the inside lane, a CMS cross country runner works hard Tuesday to hold off a pair of rivals. (Morgan White photos)

The weather was wet and very cold at Granite Falls, leading some to wrap up like a burrito in an effort to warm up after the race.

Fall has arrived.

If there was any doubt, the Coupeville Middle School cross country squad can attest summer is gone after running Tuesday at an eight-team meet in Granite Falls.

“It was a WET and cold one!,” said CMS coach Elizabeth Bitting. “EVERY runner got drenched, coach included.

“But they ALL had smiles on their shivering faces,” she added with pride in her voice. “Lesson learned on this one … invest in some cheap gloves! Poor kiddos couldn’t use their fingers at the end of the race to undo their safety pins.”

Still, despite the weather, the Wolf harriers continue to embrace every challenge as their school relaunches a cross country program which had lain dormant for two decades.

Tuesday’s event covered 1.5 miles, pitting the Wolves against rivals Langley, King’s, Northshore Christian, Sultan, Lakewood, Cedar Park Christian and the race hosts.

Cold or not, the afternoon landed in the win column for Bitting, who, through chattering teeth, declared “It was a good day!!!!”

Coupeville Middle School runners catch a quick photo op before competing Saturday in Shoreline. (Elizabeth Bitting photo)

Truly one team, one dream.

Competing Saturday at the King’s Roller Coaster Trail Run in Shoreline, the Coupeville Middle School harriers faced a larger-than-normal starting line.

That’s because this time out, both the girls and boys competed together, covering the 1.6-mile course in one teeming mass of humanity.

While it was a bit unusual, the Wolves rose to the occasion.

“There were some nerves but they all powered through,” said CMS coach Elizabeth Bitting. “The course was VERY HILLY and all appreciate the hills around Coupeville for helping them make it up and pass others on the hills.”

The race also gave the young harriers an opportunity to cheer on and hang out with their older compatriots from CHS, who were taking part in the same meet.

“It is a powerful moment when you see two of your middle school runners walk up to a high school runner and congratulate them on a great run,” Bitting said. “Plus cheering on our high school counterparts was so much fun!”
