Wolf spikers salute their fans (and the flag).

It was not an easy day to be a fan.

Friday offered Coupeville High School fans a quandary, as the options were many.

Wolf football was across the pond, set to play Port Townsend at 6:30, but, in a rare occurrence, both CHS volleyball and soccer had Friday night home games as well.

Making matters more complicated, volleyball was in two locations, as both the varsity and JV played at the same time in separate gyms. At the exact same time as soccer kicked off.

To their credit, Wolf fans stepped up and had a strong presence at all of the events, with many of them flying back and forth between events.

Leading the way was a pack of CHS students who got dudded up in uniforms (and helmets) and led the cheers at both volleyball and soccer.

Along for the ride was travelin’ photo man John Fisken, who provides us with the pics above.

I guess it paid to get him that 12-pack of Diet Coke, after all.

And then, as always, the giggles took over.

Ridin’ the ferry. Ridin’ the ferry all year long.

It’s what Whidbey athletes and fans do, and the familiar routine played out again, as a chunk of Wolf Nation flooded onto a boat or two and bobbed its way over to Port Townsend for a dash of Friday Night Lights.

Coupeville returned with a win (28-26 over Chimacum), a share of first place in the 1A Olympic League standings and a string of snazzy photos courtesy travelin’ camera clicker John Fisken.

The faces change from year to year, but the feeling remains.

Something magical about small town football Fridays, on and off the field.

Ally Roberts

“I said no photos!!” The darker side of Ally Roberts emerges for a moment. Of course, two seconds later she was threatening to break dance for everyone, so not that dark… (John Fisken photos)

Cole

The Wolf student section or a meeting for future GQ models? You decide.

Not all the action takes place on the court.

With a band of CHS volleyball players (and fans) more than willing to play to the camera, wandering clicker John Fisken can usually find a lot going on even when the score isn’t being kept.

Thankfully, he then shares his discoveries with us.

I may have to buy him another Diet Coke or two…

Can’t have a race without the support crew.

Saturday’s Race the Reserve was no different, as event organizers, volunteers, family, friends, fans, musicians and even the occasional eagle joined in to make things run smoothly.

Capturing all the behind the scenes action was travelin’ photo man John Fisken and the pics above are courtesy him.

At some point, I’m going to have to go buy the man a Diet Coke or 300…

If it’s July 25, it’s football season.

Sort of.

With summer workouts winding down, Coupeville High School got a chance to run plays against a real foe Saturday, with Lakeside coming to town for a scrimmage.

Traveling photo man John Fisken was nice enough to grace us with his presence, and the photos above are courtesy him.

This batch focuses on Coupeville coaches and fans, while the next article will feature Wolf players in action.

Oh, and if you’re curious, the first day of real practice?

Wednesday, Aug. 19 — a mere 25 days from now.
