Wolf junior Jonathan Valenzuela was credited with five tackles in Coupeville’s season-opening football clash with Klahowya. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

You can lose your mind playing the stats game.

Or, you can accept that while some categories are fairly easy to track, such as touchdowns, others — such as tackles or yardage — are often far trickier.

With that in mind, I present a look at Coupeville High School football stats through week one.

A mixture of stuff I tracked myself, and numbers plucked from MaxPreps, it’s not 100%, but it’s close enough to publish.

Having used my own eyes to witness Wolf senior Brian Casey blow through the Klahowya line and stuff an Eagle runner, I’m a little surprised MaxPreps doesn’t credit him with any tackles.

But, debate always adds a tangy little crunch to any stats story, so here we are.

And with that, on to week two, with the battle for The Bucket going down in Langley Friday night at 7 PM.

Sean Toomey-Stout (30) has traded Coupeville’s red and black for University of Washington purple and gold. (Chelle Herbruger photos)

He’s a Dawg.

Sean Toomey-Stout’s journey from Coupeville athletic sensation to being the future of University of Washington football continues.

Saturday brought the U-Dub season opener, and while a loss to Montana put a dampener on things in general, the mere sight of The Torpedo on the sidelines is enough to send a thrill through Cow Town fans.

Tim Ursu looks for room to rumble. (Photos by JohnsPhotos.net)

The pop of pads hitting pads. The click of fingers on a camera.

Those sounds and more could be heard Friday, as Coupeville High School opened a new school year with a home football game against Klahowya.

Along for the ride in the first half was ever-busy photographer John Fisken, who worked the Wolf sidelines, then skedaddled to Oak Harbor High School in time for its gridiron debut.

To see all the action shots Fisken nabbed while camped out in Cow Town, and possibly buy an early Christmas present for grandma, pop over to:

The Wolf line gets ready to explode.

Scott Hilborn heads off on what would turn into a 64-yard TD run.

Exactly the way CHS coach Marcus Carr drew the play up.

Dominic Coffman eludes a would-be tackler.

Daylon Houston mashes the ball.

Isaiah Bittner eyeballs the defense.

Ursu (on top) and Hilborn sandwich a Klahowya runner.
