Everything’s a bit topsy-turvy.

As sports return from a pandemic shutdown, things are being played out of order this school year, with fall sports following on the heels of spring sports, with winter sports going last.

Also, the schedules are pared down, with games against only conference foes from the Northwest 2B/1B League.

With Coupeville High School moving from 1A to 2B, there’s also another new wrinkle to scheduling, as boys soccer bounces from spring to fall, now being played in the same season as girls soccer.

In addition, the male booters have a somewhat different set of opponents from other Coupeville teams.

While they face Friday Harbor, Orcas Island, La Conner, and Mount Vernon Christian, both Concrete and Darrington don’t play boys soccer.

They are replaced, for this sport only, by Grace Academy, Providence Classical Christian, and Cedar Park Christian (Lynnwood).

While a sister school, that CPC is not the same one which Coupeville played as a member of the 1A North Sound Conference. That former foe springs from Bothell.

Then there’s tennis, which draws only a single opponent — Friday Harbor — across a six-match death rumble.

The Wolverines join the Wolves as the only NWL teams to embrace the art of the drop shot, and, as mentioned above, there are no non-conference matches to supplement the schedule this time around.

And what of ye olde annual tradition of hosting a Homecoming football game, you ask?

With no dance, limited fan attendance at games, and only two home football games (out of four total), probably best to plan for that returning (hopefully) in fall 2021.

Coaching wise, Ken Stange (boys tennis), Kyle Nelson (girls soccer), Marcus Carr (football), and Cory Whitmore (volleyball) are back.

They’re joined by Robert Wood (boys soccer) and Elizabeth Bitting (cross country), both making their debuts in new coaching positions.

It’s happening.

Barring any further twists or turns in the Age of Coronavirus, Coupeville High School athletes begin spring sports this coming Monday, February 22.

The first games in a shortened season are set to begin March 4, with play ending April 3.

The last time a CHS sports team competed was Feb. 11, 2020, when the Wolf girls basketball team faced Meridian in a season-ending playoff tilt.

Several weeks later, COVID-19 shut down all Washington state schools, and spring sports were eventually cancelled.

Coupeville, and its new mates in the Northwest 2B/1B League are opening with spring sports, which are all played outdoors, with hopes of then moving to fall (March 29-May 8) and winter (May 3-June 12) seasons.

With the shortened time frame, there is some small overlap with practices for the next season beginning during the last week of the preceding season.

All CHS games will be against league foes, and, in most cases, there won’t be any sort of playoffs this school year.

One early exception to that, however, is track and field, which has a league championship meet scheduled for April 3 in Coupeville.

Looking at the schedule as it sits, Wolf softball has the most games, with 12, followed by baseball (10), girls tennis (6), and track (6).

Baseball and softball both have a pair of doubleheaders, while tennis has just one opponent — Friday Harbor — as none of the other NWL teams field a net squad.

As probably goes without saying at this point, things can and may change.

Coupeville Athletic Director Willie Smith giggles as he pulls off yet another schedule change. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

The countdown has begun.

Yes, we’re still knee-deep in summer, which you can tell by the frequent rain storms. But, out there on the horizon, you can see the faintest rumors of the approaching fall sports season.

The first game — a non-conference road football clash Aug. 31 with Port Townsend — is 59 days away.

After that comes the first league battle (boys tennis Sept. 5) and the first home games (volleyball and girls soccer Sept. 6).

The new school year will bring a new league, as Coupeville has bolted from the 1A Olympic League after four years to get in on the ground floor of the new 1A North Sound Conference.

That means Klahowya is long gone, while Chimacum and Port Townsend remain only as the occasional non-conference entry on the schedule.

CHS will square off with South Whidbey, King’s, Cedar Park Christian-Bothell, Sultan and Granite Falls in the new league, though boys tennis will face a slightly different road than their fellow athletes.

The Wolf netters, along with South Whidbey, the only other North Sound Conference school to play boys tennis, will compete in the Emerald City League.

That pits the two Island schools against private school powerhouses like two-time defending state champs University Prep.

The league change also affects Coupeville’s middle school teams, as they get away from ginormous Stevens and Sequim, which fed 2A high schools, as well as leaving Forks, Chimacum and Blue Heron behind.

Sultan, Granite Falls, King’s and Langley form the core of the new foes, with Northshore Christian Academy also in the mix for some sports.

With some trepidation, I offer the schedules below, which cover five high school and three middle school programs.

While I’d like to believe these are the final, set-in-stone, schedules, I know that’s wishful thinking.

So, as we move forward, keep an eye on both the school and league sites, because things can, and will, change.

Schedules are tricky things.

Jump back some 78 days and I was brave (or naive) enough to publish the first batch of fall sports schedules for Coupeville High School.

Of course, just as I suspected, stuff has changed. A few little tweaks here, a few radical detours there.

So now, as we sit less than 72 hours away from the first official game of the 2017-2018 school sports year, here’s the revamped, buffed ‘n shined version of the fall sports schedules.

Will things continue to change? Without a doubt.

After this, weather will play a big part in how smoothly the tennis schedule plays out.

And, of course, we live on an Island that gets a fair amount of wind and relies on ferries, so…

Use this as a guide, but keep on eye on http://coupeville.tandem.co/ and http://www.olympicleague.com/ for updates.

And here you go, 98.3% correct … at least for a moment:

Maddy Hilkey and her CHS volleyball teammates kick off the season Sept. 5 against Mount Vernon Christian. (John Fisken photo)

81 days.

It’s both forever and just around the corner, and it’s the gap between today and the first game of the 2017-2018 school year.

Wolf football is first up, with a road game Sept. 1 at South Whidbey, with The Bucket on the line.

After that, boys tennis and volleyball hit the ground running Sept. 5, with girls soccer the last to debut Sept. 7.

With CHS Athletic Director Willie Smith on top of things, the schedules below are already (virtually) locked-in.

Now, of course, things can and will change over the next three months (hopefully not dates so much, but times can certainly shift).

So, treasure this list, pore over it, memorize it, laminate it and light candles around it, but also don’t forget to keep an eye on the following web sites as we get closer to fall:
