It wasn’t flawless, but it didn’t need to be.

The high-flying Coupeville High School volleyball squad let visiting Chimacum hang around a bit longer than anticipated Tuesday, but still was able to drop the hammer when it mattered most.

Closing out the night with a bang, the Wolves made off with a 25-19, 25-21, 18-25, 25-12 decision, their eighth win in their last nine matches.

The victory lifts Coupeville to 7-0 in 1A Olympic League play, 10-3 overall.

It’s the most wins in a single season for the CHS spikers since the 2004 team set the school record with 13 victories.

The Wolves have two more league matches — Thursday at Klahowya and Saturday at Port Townsend — then host the district playoffs Nov. 5.

Win twice that day and they punch their ticket to the state tourney.

Playing on Senior Night (Coupeville honored Tiffany Briscoe, Ally Roberts, Valen Trujillo and long-time manager Kailey Kellner), the Wolves took a bit to get warmed up.

CHS trailed at some point in all four sets, but was able to use strong runs at the service stripe from Hope Lodell — who threw down a match-high 12 aces — and big hits from a number of players to pull away.

While he’s always happy to pocket a win, Wolf coach Cory Whitmore sees plenty of room for growth.

“We’re going to ramp up our work in practice and get back to basics,” he said. “If we want to go to state, we need to be more consistent.”

Still, Whitmore liked how his squad bounced right back from dropping the third set, closing the match with conviction.

“I’m extremely happy with the way we responded in set four,” he said. “We really ramped up the pressure and ended things on a strong note.”

Coupeville grabbed the lead for good at 7-5 in the fourth set when Briscoe rifled a winner off of a Chimacum defender’s arm, lighting the fuse on the coming explosion.

From that point on, the Wolves finally found their lock-down mode, spraying winners left and right.

Lodell went on a tear at the service stripe, firing off three consecutive aces, before Katrina McGranahan closed the night with winners on six straight serves.

Sarah Wright, bouncing around giddily on the right side, delivered three of those winners, cracking balls that scattered Cowboys and made the grin on her own face grow larger with each passing moment.

The coup de grâce came from sophomore sensation Emma Smith, who took an elevator up to the top floor of the penthouse, hung motionless in the air for an eternity, waiting for the ball to arrive, then hit it with so much force she may have left a permanent dent.

Smith’s kill may have been just one point of many on the night, but it was the type that scars the psyches of rival players for years to come.

Coupeville controlled the net all match, with Lodell using her killer hops to elevate for some putaways that were hit with enough force to blow the back doors on the gym open.

As they have done all season, the Wolves came away with a very balanced attack.

Lodell had seven kills to go with her dozen aces, while Payton Aparicio collected five aces and seven digs.

McGranahan tattooed the ball for a team-high nine kills, with Briscoe (5), Mikayla Elfrank (4) and Wright (4) all joining in on the fun.

Meanwhile, Trujillo (20 digs), Lauren Rose (15 assists) and Ashley Menges (11 assists) also scribbled their names firmly on the stat sheet.

As he basked in the win and looked at the road ahead, Whitmore, who is in his first season as a head coach, paid tribute to his veterans.

“This is my first senior group and they have trusted in me and formed the backbone of the team for us,” he said. “They have supported us emotionally and on the floor, and that’s huge.”

And while a 10-3 record looks pretty dang good, it’s not the final stop for these Wolves.

“We’re very happy to have won the league title, but we’re not satisfied to stop there,” Whitmore said. “That’s not where we think we can peak.”

They like the aces.

The high-flying Coupeville High School volleyball squad has roared to a league title and a 9-3 record thanks in large part to its success at the service stripe.

The Wolves have six players who handle serving duties, and all of them land in the top 15 among 1A players for aces.

CHS junior Hope Lodell tops all 1A spikers whose teams have reported stats to MaxPreps, and her 72 aces is fourth-best across all divisions (1B-4A).

The three girls ahead of her have a huge advantage, with each having played 8-14 more sets and uncorked 36-87 more service attempts.

Lodell hits aces on 37.9% of her serves, the highest percentage by anyone in the top 10.

Coupeville stacks up quite nicely with other teams when you compare stats other than aces, as well.

Seven Wolves are currently among the top 20 performers in 1A in at least one stat category, with five of those spikers showing up in two categories.

Valen Trujillo (#5 in digs) and Payton Aparicio (#5 in aces) join Lodell in cracking the top five in a category.

They may never lose again.

Picking up a major dose of confidence with every win, the Coupeville High School JV volleyball squad hasn’t seen anything other than a victory in a full month.

Thursday night the Wolves made it seven straight W’s, drilling host Port Townsend in straight sets.

The 25-17, 25-5, 25-11 win lifts the CHS young guns to 6-0 in 1A Olympic League play, 9-2 overall.

“It was a really good game,” said Coupeville JV coach Kristin Bridges. “We played with a lot more confidence, which was a huge goal this season.

“I’m really proud of the progress the girls have made so far this season,” she added. “We are passing really well and have so much more confidence. Our movement on the court as a team is getting better every day.

“It was an exciting win for everyone.”

Coupeville fired off 29 aces in the match to set the tone, then racked up 15 kills at the net to mute any RedHawk rallies.

Lucy Sandahl (six aces and two assists), Scout Smith (three aces, nine assists, two digs) and Willow Vick (seven aces) led the way for the Wolves, while almost every player on the roster jumped on to the stat sheet.

Hannah Davidson (five aces, two kills, two digs), Maddy Hilkey (two aces, four digs) and Zoe Trujillo (three aces, two kills) were also key.

Meanwhile, Jillian Mayne (two aces), Maya Toomey-Stout (three kills), Nicole Lester (one kill), Peytin Vondrak (two kills) and Raven Vick (three kills) all chipped in with stellar play.

It took Cory Whitmore 12 matches to do something not accomplished in the previous 11 seasons.

The first-year Coupeville High School volleyball coach led the Wolves to their first league title since 2004, clinching with a straight-sets win Thursday at Port Townsend.

The 25-19, 25-17, 25-23 victory lifts the Wolves to 6-0 in 1A Olympic League play, 9-3 overall.

While it has three regular season matches left, Coupeville is three games up on Chimacum and Klahowya (both 3-3), and owns tiebreakers on both schools, having already beaten them both twice.

Next up for the Wolves?

Making a run at going 9-0 in league play, a feat accomplished the past two seasons by the CHS girls’ basketball team, but never by a league volleyball team.

In 2014 and 2015 Klahowya went 6-0 and won back-to-back titles, before the league schedule was expanded to nine matches this season to sync up with baseball, softball, soccer and basketball.

The Wolves can also continue their run at the school single-season record for wins — 13 in 2004 — and get ready to open postseason play at home.

As the #1 seed from the Olympic League, Coupeville advances to the double-elimination portion of districts, an event they host Nov. 5.

They’ll need to win two matches that day, while losing no more than one, to advance to state.

To see the bracket, pop over to: http://www.olympicleague.com/tournament.php?tournament_id=2069&sport=10

The league title is the fourth in program history, following Northwest League titles in 1997, 2001 and 2004.

Kim Meche coached the first two of those teams, while Toni Crebbin was in command of the record-setting ’04 team, which also won a tri-district title and toppled the #1 ranked team in the state.

Those Wolves split four matches with arch-rival La Conner, the state champ that year, beating the Braves for the league title, but falling to them at the big dance.

Thursday night, CHS didn’t play lights out, but it stayed in control all match and put the hammer down when appropriate.

“It was good to pull out the win tonight on the road playing everyone,” Whitmore said. “The girls worked hard to be in the position to be league champions.

“To accomplish this and clinch first place is a result of that hard work and a goal met.”

The Wolves spread out the stats, with Ashley Menges (11 assists and five service aces), Lauren Rose (eight assists, four aces) and Hope Lodell (five kills, five digs) leading the attack.

Sarah Wright cranked out a season-high four kills, while senior captain Valen Trujillo led the squad with 17 digs as she continued to add to her school career record.
