Support a true warrior

The warrior of the wrestling mat needs our help.

Izzy LeVine, who grew up in Coupeville and now is an award-winning grappler in Arizona, has qualified for the world’s largest youth national tournament, which goes down this summer in Fargo, North Dakota.

It would be the second-straight trip to nationals for the Casteel High School sophomore.

LeVine is deeply committed to perfecting the dark arts of the wrestling mat, competing year-round in both folkstyle and freestyle.

A member of the Arizona National Team, she’s a state meet veteran and an All-American.

To get to Fargo, LeVine is currently raising money to cover the costs of training camps, travel, and team expenses.

She’s set up a GoFundMe, and for every donation of $20 or more, she’ll send you a WARRIOR bracelet, which “symbolizes the mindset needed to compete at a high level and reflects my Native heritage.”

She’s young, talented, and state-bound

Tenley Stuurmans doesn’t believe in wasting time.

The Coupeville 8th grader hasn’t attended a day of high school yet, and still hasn’t played a home tennis match, but she’s off to the state tennis tournament just the same.

Sweeping three matches at the District 1/2 tourney Friday at the Amy Yee Tennis Center in Seattle, Stuurmans claimed the singles crown and punched her ticket to the big dance.

Now, like Cousin Payton Aparicio before her, she’ll make the long trek to Eastern Washington for the 2B/1B state championships.

They go down May 24-25 at the Yakima Tennis Club, and it’ll be a busy couple of days for the Stuurmans clan, as Tenley’s older sister, Lyla, a CHS junior, competes at the state track and field meet in the same town.

Coupeville, which has played its entire season on the road as mediocre spring weather slowed work on new courts, sent five girls to districts, and won four of six contests.

Wolf senior Skylar Parker teamed with younger sister Brynn at first doubles, splitting a pair of matches.

The siblings smoked a duo from Puget Sound Adventist Academy 6-2, 6-0, before falling 6-0, 6-1 to Northwest 2B/1B League rivals Kira Clark and Megan Mellinger of Friday Harbor.

The other CHS doubles team in action — Sophia Phay and Kauri Hamilton — put up a strong battle before being knocked out 6-2, 6-0 by a tandem from Summit Atlas.

“The girls did great; fought their hearts out!” said Coupeville assistant coach Starla Seal.

For Stuurmans, the first 8th grader to play tennis for CHS since the school returned to being a 2B institution in 2020, Friday was her crowning achievement.

So far.

Despite not being a high schooler until this coming fall, Stuurmans made the jump to playing above her age group in two of three sports this school year.

After playing middle school volleyball, she played both high school and middle school basketball this past winter, taking the court with the JV high school squad.

The net program, with only eight players on the roster, offered a chance to play varsity all season, and Stuurmans has excelled in both singles and doubles.

Friday, she opened against Izabelle Maia of Puget Sound, and rolled her 6-0, 6-1.

After that came a 6-0, 6-3 win over Nikki Cole of Friday Harbor, which clinched her trip to state, and then a 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Kendall Lee of La Conner, who will join her in Yakima.

It made for a long day, but Stuurmans, who was coming off a three-hour slugfest in one match at the end of the regular season, was up for it.

“She’s a fighter and a natural athlete,” Seal said. “Those two combined are a recipe for some good tennis.”

Weak weather, strong performances

Back in double digits.

Coupeville 7th grader Tamsin Ward claimed three more wins Thursday during a three-team middle school track and field meet in Langley.

Coming out on top in the 100 and shot put, while also running a leg on a triumphant 4 x 200 relay squad, the young Wolf reached 10 victories on the season.

That leaves Ward one off her pace from last season, when she debuted with 11 wins.

The two CMS teammates closest to her in claiming gold medals are 8th grader Beckett Green and 7th grader Brooklyn Pope, who both have won seven times this season.

Pope joined Ward, Elizabeth Marshall, and Emma Cushman on that 4 x 2 team Thursday, while also claiming an individual title in the high jump.

Green seized the day in the 200, with fellow Wolf 8th graders Johnathan Jacobsen (High Jump) and Roger Merino-Martinez (Long Jump) rounding out Coupeville’s winners.

Host South Whidbey won the girls team titles, while King’s claimed the boys’ crowns.

The day played out in less-than-spectacular conditions, but the Wolves held up well.

“Despite some rainy and cold weather, the middle school athletes had a successful last regular season meet!” said CMS coach Amber Wyman.

“Our athletes gave it their all! We are very proud of their accomplishments and are looking forward to seeing what they can do in their final two meets at Lakewood.”

Those meets comprise the Cascade League Championships, with prelims set for May 22 and finals for May 29.

The numbers are frozen in time now.

With the season finished, we’re taking a final look at stats for the Coupeville High School varsity baseball squad.

Overall, the Wolves went 11-9, claimed a co-league title, won a bi-district crown, and advanced to state for the second straight year under coach Steve Hilborn.

Some players got on the field late due to injuries, while others moved away mid-season, but if you made your mark at some point, you’re on the list.

Former Wolf sizzles in Sunshine State

She finished her season with a flourish.

Outperforming her seed by five spots, Fernandina Beach High School junior Savina Wells claimed eighth place in the high jump Thursday at the FHSAA Class 2A State Track and Field Championships in Florida.

She was one of three Pirates to compete at state, and one of two to score points, joining javelin chucker Luke Twardy.

The former Coupeville supernova tied her season-best mark with a jump of four feet, 11.75 inches, barely missing her PR, which stands at 5-00 from her sophomore campaign.

Wells, who grew up playing multiple sports on Central Whidbey’s prairie, earned her ticket to state by winning a jump-off at regionals May 7, after finishing in a three-way tie for second place.

Along with the high jump, she also competed in the javelin, discus, and long jump this season, finishing fifth in the first of those events at regionals.

This was Wells second season of track at Fernandina Beach, and her first trip to state.

She also plays volleyball and basketball for the Pirates.

Ulrik and Izzy’s younger sister, sometimes referred to as “The Chosen One” by Cow Town sports bloggers back in the day, was a four-sport sensation as a young Wolf, also ripping up the softball field.

Coupeville’s loss became Florida’s gain when she and her family moved to the Sunshine State after her freshman year.
