Murdy, teammates earn big soccer honors

They think we’re classy.

Northwest 2B/1B League boys soccer coaches honored Coupeville High School with the team sportsmanship award when All-Conference teams were announced Monday.

It was one of two honors earned by the Wolves, as senior midfielder Xavier Murdy was also named as a First-Team All-League pick.

Tommy Anderson of Orcas Island and Jeffrey Evans of Providence Classical Christian shared league MVP, while Terry Turner was tabbed as Coach of the Year after leading Orcas to the state title.

Stone a slam-dunk hoops honoree

Whether playing in Coupeville or Britain, Makana Stone is among the best on the hardwood.

The American assassin scores one more time.

Coupeville High School grad Makana Stone capped a whirlwind first season of overseas basketball by being named Friday to the Women’s National Basketball League Team of the Year in England.

Repping Loughborough University, the former Wolf finished second in WNBL coaches voting.

Harriet Welham, who led Ipswich to the league title, claimed Player of the Year honors for a second-straight season.

Stone, Esther Little of Ipswich, Isi Ozzy-Momodu of CoLA Southwark, and Sitota Gines Espinosa of Reading round out the All-League squad.

Three of the five honorees are from England, with Stone springing from Cow Town, USA, and Gines Espinosa a Spaniard.

Welham, who topped all WNBL scorers at 25.9 points per game, received five first-place votes from coaches, and 40 total points, with Stone edging out Little 24-23 in voting.

After graduating from Coupeville, Josh and Eileen Stone’s daughter had an impressive four-year run at Whitman College in Walla Walla, then headed off to the land of tea and crumpets, basketball in hand.

She had an immediate impact at Loughborough, helping the Riders go 13-6 and finish third in a 10-team league.

Loughborough, which advanced to the semifinals of the postseason tourney, was 13-4 when Stone suited up, and 0-2 without her.

Andre Stone’s lil’ sis hit the shot of the year — banking in a buzzer beater to KO Ipswich in the team’s first meeting — and routinely threw down double-doubles all season.

She finished with 270 points, 231 rebounds, 33 assists, 58 steals, and eight blocked shots.

Chernikoff, Prescott lead All-League picks

Northwest 2B/1B League coaches also honored Kylie Chernikoff.

Well-respected by their rivals.

The Coupeville High School volleyball squad, which claimed second-place in the Northwest 2B/1B League, put six players on the All-League team.

Seniors Kylie Chernikoff and Chelsea Prescott landed on the First Team, with senior Maddie Vondrak and sophomore Maddie Georges earning Second Team honors.

Sophomores Alita Blouin and Jill Prince round out the Wolf honorees, named Honorable Mention.

In a move which will surprise .00001% of anyone who saw a match this season, La Conner sophomore Ellie Marble, a serene superstar with often-startling power, was tabbed as league MVP.

NWL coaches decided to share the sportsmanship award among all six schools which played, acknowledging the effort of everyone involved in getting the season played during the Age of Coronavirus.

“Best year ever, as you all were amazing!,” said the press release.

Wolf booters shoot, score!!

   With two goals and a team-high six assists, sophomore Avalon Renninger had plenty to celebrate.

The streak lives.

The Coupeville High School girls soccer squad landed three selections on this year’s Olympic League All-Conference squad, marking the fourth-straight year the Wolves have reached, or topped, that figure.

Of the league’s four schools, only Klahowya and CHS have hit that trifecta, or better, each year.

This time around, it was senior midfielder Sage Renninger, junior forward Kalia Littlejohn and freshman forward Genna Wright who got the nod.

It was the second time the two older players have been tabbed by league coaches (Renninger was also All-League in 2016, Littlejohn in 2015), while Wright was the lone 9th grader to crack this year’s roster.

The All-Conference honors were just the tip of the iceberg, though, as the Wolf booters gathered Tuesday to hand out awards at a season-capping banquet.

Renninger picked up Player of the Year honors from CHS coach Kyle Nelson, while Lauren Bayne (Most Inspirational), Natalie Hollrigell (Most Improved) and Wright (Rookie of the Year) also took home hardware.

“The Surgeon” slices, dices, wins MVP!!

It was a season of domination, right down to the end.

The Coupeville High School volleyball squad drilled its Olympic League foes this season, winning all nine matches, and, for that matter, all 27 sets.

So it came as no surprise when the Wolves received 50% of the All-Conference selections, including, for the second-straight year, MVP.

This time around the highest honor went to senior Hope Lodell, who moved to libero for her final year, but never lost her reputation for carving up foes as “The Surgeon.”

Sliding over to replace a legend in Valen Trujillo, Lodell adapted her game to fit her new job and excelled on a nightly basis.

Whether scraping digs off the floor or firing wicked aces which burnt the top of the net and caused dad Mike to lose his mind, she went out all guns blazing.

After helping lead CHS to a league title, a tie for the most wins in program history (13) and its first trip to state since 2004, Lodell exits holding numerous marks on the school volleyball record board.

Also getting honors for Coupeville were fellow seniors Katrina McGranahan (last year’s MVP), Mikayla Elfrank and Lauren Rose, who were all named First-Team All-League.

Chimacum junior Renee Woods, Port Townsend senior Alana McCleese and Klahowya sophomore Rachel Bailey rounded out the First-Team roster.

Klahowya sophomore Maile Lueck was tabbed as the defensive player of the year.
