cheer

The Wolf cheer squad warms up for a night of hollerin’ and stunts with a moment of sisterly solidarity.

The CHS band, ready to get rowdy.

baby

“They’ve got a good beat and I can dance to ’em!”

Mollie

Mollie (front) and Mckenzie Bailey stake their claim to being Wolf three-ball assassin Kailey Kellner’s biggest boosters.

fans

Brenden Gilbert (hat) takes his responsibility to anchor the CHS student section seriously, showing up long before tip-off, accompanied by his support crew.

Nicole and Sarah

Nicole Lester (top) works on Sarah Wright’s ‘do, while Brisa Herrera (left) monitors things.

trio

Later that night, the trio of (l to r) Sarah Wright, Ashlie Shank and Ema Smith would play, and win. At that moment, however, they were otherwise occupied.

Makana candy

The semi-annual meeting of the Sour Patch Kids Fan Club unites (l to r) Lindsey Roberts, Makana Stone and Wolf mom/candy smuggler Amy Briscoe.

The camera is a restless beast.

When action isn’t happening on the hard-court, rovin’ photo man John Fisken likes to go hunting for pics wherever he can find them.

Then, he delivers them unto us, a merry medley of band, cheer, fans, wandering babies and Sour Patch Kids bribes, and we are better for it.

Even if we didn’t get any candy ourselves…

girls and papa kiel

Coupeville’s finest, (l to r) Ashlie Shank, Sarah Wright, Smith and Ashley Menges, get photobombed by Steve “Big Papa” Kiel.

Every great sports photographer knows one important trick — don’t spend all your time focused on the on-court action.

At any Coupeville High School basketball game, there are a ton of other things going on worthy of a pic or two.

Be it band, cheer, celebrity sightings or just people goofing off, you need to get good color to go with the sports action.

The photos above, snapped at Wednesday’s Wolf doubleheader against Orcas Island, come to us courtesy Diet Coke-lovin’ camera clicker John Fisken.

Like what you see?

Well, like I said, he likes his Diet Coke and he’s scheduled to be shooting at Friday night’s CHS girls’ basketball games.

Hint, hint, nudge, nudge, oh wait, is that a concession stand that sells Diet Coke?!?!

How convenient.

team

The Wolves cap their pre-game huddle by firing up a round of shots.

Kyla Briscoe

The key to Kyla Briscoe’s success? The purple shoes. Oh, and talent, too. A whole lot of talent helps, as well.

Jovanah Foote

Jovanah Foote will knock you out … with her note-perfect cheer routines.

"Your hair game is strong ... but mine is stronger!!"

“Your hair game is strong, sister … but mine is stronger!!”

Mia Littlejohn

“At my signal, unleash Hell, Wolves!!”

Is there anything Sylvia Hurlburt doesn’t do?

No, the answer is no, cause she does it all. And she does it all really, really well.

Cheerleader, choreographer, track star, ballet dancer, and, of course, photographer with mad skills.

All of those words describe the ever-moving, ever-grooving Coupeville High School senior.

Her latest work, which she is nice enough to let me unleash onto the masses, is this collection of girls’ basketball photos.

The eight pics above are just a small fraction of what she shot — I’ll continue to drop Hurlburt originals on you as the season unfolds — but they give you a solid taste of what she’s up to when she gets let loose with a camera.

squad (John Fisken photos)

fourpack

Freshman Gaby Halpin (top) hangs out with veterans (l to r) Robin Cedillo, Mckenzie Meyer and Claire Mietus.

Cheerleaders, camera. Camera, cheerleaders.

Travelin’ photo man John Fisken clicked away merrily Wednesday as CHS hosted a season-opening basketball doubleheader, but not all the photos made it from his camera to my computer … until now.

The pics above capture the Wolf cheer squad in brief moments of rest, as they were on their feet and hard at work the other 99.2% of the night.

Best way to kick off a new season?

Portrait night.

With basketball returning to the CHS gym Wednesday, the Wolf winter cheer squad made its debut on the sidelines as well, and travelin’ photo man John Fisken was there to document the proceedings.

By the time he was done clicking, we had these extra-glossy, suitable-for-framing photos of the 10 young women who are repping the red and black this season.

To all the mamas and grandmas out there, you’re welcome.
