For the first time in two decades, Coupeville High School sent an entire cross country team to a meet. (Dawnelle Conlisk photo)

They’re back.

When the Coupeville High School cross country team ran Wednesday at the North Sound Conference Preview in Arlington, it was the first time the Wolves put a full team on the course in two decades.

After a handful of runners trained and traveled with other schools in recent years, including Tyler King winning an individual state title in 2010, CHS relaunched an in-school program this season.

Coached by Wolf running legend Natasha Bamberger, a state champ herself in 1985, Coupeville has six boys on its roster, five of whom ran in the first meet.

In Washington state high school cross country, varsity teams can go to seven, but the first five across the line are the ones who count.

Perennial state meet contender South Whidbey claimed the team title Wednesday on the boys side. The Falcons placed five runners in the top 12, sliding past King’s and Cedar Park Christian.

Coupeville finished fifth out of six teams, with Sultan unable to field a full team.

On the girls side, the Wolves have just two active runners, but they both placed in the top half of the draw, with Catherine Lhamon’s 7th place finish the best showing by any Wolf.

King’s won the girls title, outpacing South Whidbey and Granite Falls. Sultan, Coupeville and Cedar Park Christian didn’t have full rosters.

Naomi Smith of King’s and Isaac Cortes of Granite Falls were the first runners across the line.

This one has been a long time coming.

Ken Stange kicked off his 14th season as Coupeville High School boys tennis coach Wednesday, and then his players stormed the courts in Langley and accomplished something none of his previous teams had.

They beat South Whidbey.

For 14 seasons, whether they were league foes or non-conference rivals, the Falcon boy netters have owned the Wolves.

The CHS girls have beaten South Whidbey under Stange, but their male counterparts couldn’t say the same.

There have been close matches and blowouts, but never once had Coupeville come out on top. Until the magic happened on a sunny early September afternoon.

Sparked by a gutsy comeback win by senior Jakobi Baumann, the Wolves jumped back on the bus with a 3-2 win in a match that doubled as the season and league opener.

Out of six schools in the new North Sound Conference, only Coupeville and South Whidbey play boys tennis, so they’re competing in the ultra-elite Emerald City League this year.

While both might have issues dealing with the private school powerhouses awaiting them, like two-time defending state champ University Prep, for the moment, the Wolves sit atop the league standings.

To get there, CHS got big-time performances from singles aces Baumann and Drake Borden, and first-time doubles duo James Wood and Mason Grove.

“Jakobi was amazing today,” Stange said. “After losing a 5-2 lead in the first set, he persevered, outlasting Levi (Buck) in the second, and playing some of the most consistent tennis in the third.

“Mason and James winning in James’ first match was special and Drake drubbed his opponent.”

Senior goalie Sarah Wright and the CHS girls soccer team kicked off a new season Tuesday in Bellingham. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

Right into the fire.

The Coupeville High School girls soccer team has no pushovers on its early-season schedule, and a Wolf team in transition will get a chance to learn quickly against tough competition.

First up was Meridian, which came within a game of making it to the state tourney last season.

The Trojans are already gelling this time around, as they rolled to a season-opening 4-0 win over Coupeville Tuesday in Bellingham.

After absorbing the shutout loss, the Wolves head back to Whidbey, where they’ll play three straight.

The home stand starts Thursday, with Friday Harbor, a 2B state quarter-finalist last year, arriving in Cow Town for a 4:30 match-up.

Then comes defending 1A state champs King’s Sept. 11 and always-tough Sultan Sept. 13, as CHS plays its first-ever games in the new North Sound Conference.

Second-year Coupeville girls coach Kyle Nelson, who led his team to a program-record eight wins last year, came away from the opening day loss with eyes set firmly on the long view.

“We lost, but it gave us a look against a good team and areas we will be looking to improve,” he said. “With many new players, and players in new positions, it was a first chance to start figuring out our system and changes that will need to be made.”

Sean “The Torpedo” Toomey-Stout exploded a 20-year-old school record Friday night. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

“The Torpedo” just blew up 20 years of history.

Coupeville High School junior Sean Toomey-Stout, returning to the gridiron after missing the final five weeks of last season, could not be contained Friday by host Port Townsend.

By the time he was done, the Wolves had thrashed the RedHawks 28-18, and Toomey-Stout had racked up 321 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries.

That tops Coupeville’s single-game mark of 320, set by Ian Barron in 1998 against La Conner.

It was the third-oldest single-game record on the school’s big board, trailing only Scott McMartin’s 27 tackles in ’81 and Chad Gale’s 202-yard receiving night in ’87.

Barron still holds five other CHS records, including most rushing TD’s in a game (6), season (16) and career (37) and most rushing yards in a season (1,753) and career (4,713).

That last number is even more impressive as injuries in two separate seasons combined to rob Barron of 10 total games.

So, he got those 4,713 yards in the equivalent of three full seasons.

For the moment, though, the spotlight is firmly on Toomey-Stout, who has returned even faster and stronger than he was a season ago.

While big brother Cameron is no longer lining up next to him on kickoff coverage, having headed off to college, Sean’s twin sister Maya, moms Beth Stout and Lisa Toomey and the bonkers Torpedo Fan Club keep the stands rockin’.

As Toomey-Stout and his teammates prep for week two (Vashon comes to Coupeville Friday for a 6 PM kickoff), a look at all the stats from opening night:

Enjoy it while it lasts.

Which should be for about a hot second.

Two days into a new athletic year, King’s High School, which boasts 50+ state titles in its storied history, sits in dead-last place in both sports in which North Sound Conference teams have started playing.

And yes, we’re talking one whole game in both football and girls soccer, and yes, we’re talking a non-conference game at that, and yes, I’m being kinda snarky and petty.

Welcome back to getting needled on a regular basis, you private school princes and princesses, you.

Anyways, at the moment, both Coupeville and South Whidbey, public schools competing with only athletes who live inside their boundaries, are a flawless 1-0 for the 2018-2019 school year and King’s is 0-2.

Quick, someone get their daddy to go donate some dollars to the athlete recruiting budget, stat!

Heh heh…

With volleyball and tennis getting rolling this coming week, the only sports which have played games that count in the win/loss columns are football and soccer.

King’s, the defending 1A state champs on the pitch, were nipped 1-0 by 3A Lakeside, a team which fell in the state quarterfinals a season ago.

In the world of the gridiron, Coupeville whacked Port Townsend 28-18, South Whidbey slipped past Friday Harbor 20-19, Sultan thrashed Vashon Island 55-0, Cedar Park Christian waxed Chimacum 47-7, Granite Falls was squashed 42-0 by Shorewood and King’s fell flat in a 31-13 loss to Lakewood.

Current standings through Sept. 2:

North Sound Conference football:

School League Overall
COUPEVILLE 0-0 1-0
CPC-Bothell 0-0 1-0
South Whidbey 0-0 1-0
Sultan 0-0 1-0
Granite Falls 0-0 0-1
King’s 0-0 0-1

North Sound Conference girls soccer:
