New school year, new photographic stars.

With fall sports beginning to get really hopping, Coupeville High School yearbook advisor Jackie Saia has her crew of camera-clicking paparazzi out working the sidelines.

Making his debut today (for Coupeville Sports at least) is Thomas Studer, who delivers the soccer pics seen above and below.

The cameras never stop clicking.

A vast army of photo-happy paparazzi stalk the sidelines of Wolf games, snapping pics and allowing me to use their work here on Coupeville Sports.

Since I’m a writer and not a photographer, it’s a great deal for me, and one I appreciate.

Lift up Leonard!

Leonard Edlund

Leonard Edlund is a righteous dude.

Since his arrival at Coupeville Middle/High School in 2021, he’s been a friendly, outgoing, hardworking guy — universally liked by his coworkers and the teens he helps shepherd through the day.

But now, medical issues have sidelined the assistant principal, preventing him from being a positive presence in the world of education he so obviously loves.

A statement from the school district, released Friday, said Edlund will be out until at least January.

For a man who has been at this work for three decades, missing out on the first day of school, missing out on being a vital part of student’s lives, has to be tough.

This is what he was built for, and his impact, here in Coupeville, and in other towns, has been hugely positive.

So, I’d like to ask the members of Wolf Nation to take a moment to make sure Edlund knows he isn’t forgotten about, that all of his time and efforts, the good cheer and the hard work, are appreciated.

Send him a note, a letter, a card wishing him the best.

CHS Attendance Secretary Barbi Ford, the true power behind the throne in the world of Wolf athletics, has volunteered to be our contact point for this effort, and make sure Edlund gets whatever positive messages are sent his way.

Action abounds, results recorded

Things are in full swing.

Fall sports are sailing right along, with every Coupeville High School team in the thick of action as we work our way through September.

The week ahead features at least one event for each Wolf squad, with three of the four playing at home.

Wolf fans cram the stands.

Volleyball is the busiest, traveling to Mount Vernon Christian Tuesday, hosting Orcas Island Thursday, then participating in a tourney at South Whidbey Saturday.

Coupeville’s co-ed soccer team takes its first road trip Tuesday to face Grace Academy, before hosting Orcas Saturday, while Wolf football welcomes La Conner to town Friday night.

Wrapping things up, CHS cross country heads down to Shoreline Saturday for a meet hosted by King’s.

“I am so proud and excited!”

Whidbey Island was alive with the sound of footsteps Saturday.

The 44th annual Carl Westling Invite in Langley brought out cross country runners, attracting the attention of 29 high schools, including the only one we really care about — Coupeville.

The Wolves had runners in four different races, with harriers pounding across the 3.1-mile course.

“The Westling Invite is always a good one,” said CHS coach Elizabeth Bitting. “It is on island and so many family members and friends are able to attend.”

Several of Coupeville’s runners were making their high school debuts, while virtually everyone nailed PR’s on a sunny, but not too hot day.

On the girl’s side of things, Noelle Western had the best finish, slicing almost two minutes off her time from last year.

Meanwhile, Coupeville’s top boys — Carson Field, Landon Roberts, and George Spear — all broke 20 minutes and were separated by less than two seconds.

Seeing her runners move as a pack, pushing and supporting each other, warms Bitting’s heart.

“I know it’s still very early on in the season, but I am so proud and excited for each and every athlete that ran today,” she said.

“They are working hard during practice, they are putting in the miles, working in the weight room and their hard work is paying off,” Bitting added.

“Now to keep them healthy!”

Coupeville returns to action next Saturday, Sept. 23 when it travels to Shoreline for the King’s Roller Coaster Trail Run.

The Wolves were supposed to also compete midweek, but a three-team meet on Orcas Island was cancelled “due to an unavoidable event.”
