Logan Downes (John Fisken photos)

Logan Downes waits for a target to get free. (John Fisken photos)

Bronec

One of Coupeville’s Bronec brothers (right) battles in the pits. Is it Hunter or Hurlee? Only their mother knows for sure.

Reed and Howard

Wyatt Howard (13) and Gabriel Reed (far right) lead the charge, as Downes prepares to deposit the ball in his running back’s hands.

The gridiron is alive with the sounds of fall.

Helmets hitting, water bottles squirting and paparazzi clicking.

As the Oak Harbor Football and Cheer League opened regular season play Saturday, John Fisken was in place, snapping away and capturing all the action.

The pics above, which come courtesy him, showcase a few of the Coupeville kids playing youth football while disguised in purple and gold.

You never know what you’re going to find when you start cleaning out the Athletic Director’s office. (Photo courtesy Willie Smith’s spring cleaning)

Sure, it’s Saturday, but you don’t always have to wait until Thursday for throwback photos.

This one comes to us from the “olden days” of 1992-1993, and gives us a glimpse into the early days of some of the best athletes to spring from Coupeville High School.

If you had to play a game of “pick the superstar before they were a superstar” it would probably come down between Jen Canfield and Marnie Bartelson.

Canfield, who is in the back row, far right, next to coach Ron Bagby, went on to be a two-time All-League hoops player in the Cascade Conference, easily one of the best to wear a Wolf uniform.

Her high school coach back in the day, Willie Smith, is now the CHS Athletic Director and the man who unearthed this pic for me.

Looking back, this is how he remembers Canfield:

“She was a complete joy to coach and completely personified what it means to be an athlete: competitive, hard working, coachable, leader, great all-around personality on and off the court.”

Bartelson was a solid hoops player herself, but soccer is where she made her name.

Playing with Oak Harbor (Coupeville didn’t have a team in the mid-’90s), she and fellow Wolf Amanda Allmer led the Wildcats to a league title and 4th place finish in 3A at state.

After winning league MVP honors in high school, Bartelson rewrote the record books at Utah State as a college player

But, while those two made the biggest post-middle school splash, at least athletically, all 12 girls featured here went on to shine, both in sports and off the court.

One, in fact, Emrie McCauslin (bottom row, far right) is the mom of a current Wolf hoops star — Maddy Hilkey.

The lineup (using maiden names):

Back row (l to r) — Jennifer Meyer, Bonnie Engle, Emily Wodjenski, Melanie Frost, Kristina Clark, Jen Canfield, Ron Bagby

Front row (l to r) — Sarah Miller, Marnie Bartelson, Rachel McIntyre, Nicole Monteleone, Jenny Christensen, Emrie McCauslin

“I know purple and gold are not really my colors. It is what it is.”

Coupeville’s football future is hard at work up in the big city.

With no youth football program of its own, the home of the Wolves sends its young gridiron warriors to Oak Harbor.

Nine Coupeville kids are currently suiting up in the Oak Harbor Football and Cheer League, spread across three divisions.

Future Wolves include:

Daylon Chapel  (Pee Wee Gold)
Joseph Cuaresma  (Pee Wee Gold)
Hunter Bronec  (Midget Purple)
Hurlee Bronec  (Midget Purple)
Logan Downes  (Midget Gold)
Gabriel Reed  (Midget Gold)
Wyatt Howard  (Midget Gold)
Tyson Bovee (Seniors)
Dominic Ricci (Seniors)

The league kicked off its season with a jamboree in Burlington-Edison Saturday, with regular play set to start this coming weekend.

Travelin’ photo whiz kid John Fisken hit the road to send back pics from the jamboree, including the two seen above.

Bennett Boyles (Photo courtesy Pat Kelley)

Two days until the biggest night of the summer.

People from near and far are expected to pack the Coupeville Rec Hall this Friday, Aug. 19 for an auction fundraiser to help an ailing Wolf hoops star.

Bennett Boyles, 11, finished three weeks of treatment for inoperable tumors on his brain stem and just returned home from Seattle, but he and his family still face a tough road ahead.

Bennett’s teachers at the Ebey Academy have been spearheading fundraisers all summer to help his mom, CHS grad Lucienne Rivera, a single mom of two who had to quit her job to take care of her son.

Friday night the Rec Hall will be jumping to the music of Jacobs Road, with more than 100 items up for auction.

Tickets are $10 and can be bought at the door (the rec hall is at 901 NW Alexander St., across the street from Christopher’s on Whidbey.)

The event, which runs from 6-10 PM, is open to all ages.

Beverages and hors d’oeuvres will be available, with wine and beer offered by donation thanks to Penn Cove Tap Room.

Some of the many items which will be up for auction:

Toby’s Tavern gift basket
Knead & Feed baking class
Framed, signed Steve Largent jersey
A party with Santa
A Seahawks tailgate party
Wine and cheese basket
A wheelbarrow full of beer
Photography sessions
A month of child care at Ebey Academy
Handyman hours
Oak Harbor Cinemas tickets
A fire pit with all the fixings
