They’re ultra-committed.

On a day when the heat and humidity in Coupeville sapped most folks, Wolf cross country coaches Paige Spangler and Elizabeth Bitting couldn’t be stopped.

The duo overcame the weather Thursday, pounding their way through an ultra-marathon.

Darkness comes, and they’re still going strong.

Averaging 5.2 miles every four hours across a 24-hour span, Bitting and Spangler ran a 50K, which breaks down to 31.2 miles.

They kicked things off at 5 AM, finishing the sixth and final leg at the Coupeville pier as midnight approached.

The finish line!

As Spangler and Bitting prep for the start of the school running season — the former is the high school coach, while the latter heads up the middle school program — they lead by example.

Spangler is training for the Chicago Marathon, which goes down Oct. 9.

Two on deck, one off the schedule.

Coupeville Middle School is offering cross country and volleyball this fall but has discontinued its boys soccer program and is directing interested players to local rec leagues.

Practice for CMS runners begins Sept. 1, with the spikers hitting the court Sept. 12.

The fall season plays out through the end of Oct., then is followed by basketball in the winter and track in the spring.

With middle school volleyball, the plan is to have players in grades 6-8 divided across three teams by talent level.

Matches played Monday or Tuesday will operate with level one playing first, followed by two and three.

The schedule flips and goes 3-2-1 when matches are contested on Wednesday or Thursday.

Both sports welcome back returning coaches, with Elizabeth Bitting mentoring the harriers and the duo of Cris Matochi and Katie Kiel calling the shots for volleyball.

With a new cross country season on the horizon, Coupeville Middle School is offering a free summer running clinic. (Elizabeth Bitting photo)

It’s a sneak preview of what’s to come.

Coupeville Middle School students headed into grades 6-8 are invited to participate in a free running clinic which will give athletes and parents a feel for what the upcoming cross country season will look like.

There are actually two clinics available, with one going July 18-20 and the other July 22-23.

Each day’s events will begin at 8:30 AM, using a variety of locations.

The clinics begin at the school track behind Coupeville Elementary School and will conclude with a visit to Fort Casey to walk, then run the middle school cross country course.

“If you have a friend who you think might be interested, invite them to come!” said CMS cross country coach Elizabeth Bitting.

“Parents, grandparents, caregivers are welcome to join and walk/run/jog the same routes,” she added. “I hope to see you soon!”

How do you replace a living legend?

By staying in-house and handing the reigns to two coaches who have worked closely with the departing guru over the years.

Randy King’s retirement means this spring’s track and field season will be the first one without him at the helm of the Coupeville High School program in almost two decades.

His replacements?

Elizabeth Bitting, who will lead the Wolf girls, and Bob Martin, who will guide the CHS boys.

Their hires, confirmed by Coupeville Athletic Director Willie Smith, will be official after approval from the school board at its next meeting.

Both coaches are putting together their own stellar runs in Cow Town, having led multiple teams.

Bitting has been a Coupeville Middle School track coach, as well as leading both middle school and high school cross country programs.

Martin, whose youngest son Logan is a senior on this year’s CHS team, has coached track, football, and basketball in Coupeville.

Spring sports practice kicks off Monday, Feb. 28, with the first track meet set to go down in La Conner Mar. 17.
