The bar has been set, the mic has been dropped.

Given first crack at a substantial photo shoot this season, the Coupeville High School girls’ basketball team (and its fans) responded strongly.

Now, as the Wolf boys near their own date with destiny (in the form of a camera-wielding John Fisken) this Friday, when they host Concrete in a non-conference tussle, the only question is — can they respond? Will they respond?

Well, that’s two questions, but you get the point.

My advice to the CHS boys hoops stars? Loosen up, play to the camera, crack a freakin’ smile every once in awhile.

You’re off to a great start, atop the 1A Olympic League. Enjoy the moment and realize there’s more to life than adopting a cold stare every time the camera comes your way.

You’re not food-deprived wrestlers, after all. You can kick ass and still have fun.

No one remembers the photos where ten dudes stare at the camera with a monotone snarl on their face. Dare to switch it up once in awhile.

Otherwise you’ve already ceded the battle to your female counterparts, who understand how to play the on-court game and off-court game equally well.

Every great sports photographer knows one important trick — don’t spend all your time focused on the on-court action.

At any Coupeville High School basketball game, there are a ton of other things going on worthy of a pic or two.

Be it band, cheer, celebrity sightings or just people goofing off, you need to get good color to go with the sports action.

The photos above, snapped at Wednesday’s Wolf doubleheader against Orcas Island, come to us courtesy Diet Coke-lovin’ camera clicker John Fisken.

Like what you see?

Well, like I said, he likes his Diet Coke and he’s scheduled to be shooting at Friday night’s CHS girls’ basketball games.

Hint, hint, nudge, nudge, oh wait, is that a concession stand that sells Diet Coke?!?!

How convenient.

Wolf Buddies

Which of these Wolf Buddies will one day be CHS athletic stars themselves? Probably all of them.

There are no more home games.

Well, at least for a few weeks.

Basketball is coming up strong on the outside, but, until then, the remaining fall contests for Coupeville High School are all on the road.

As the Wolf spikers head to Puyallup today for a district playoff game against Cascade Christian and the Coupeville gridiron squad preps for Friday’s finale at Vashon Island, one final look back at the home court advantage.

Wolf fans were loud and proud this fall, and the student section continued to regroup and bloom anew.

Look back in pride, then on to the next season, with the hope that Coupeville will pack the stands for its hoops squads.

It was not an easy day to be a fan.

Friday offered Coupeville High School fans a quandary, as the options were many.

Wolf football was across the pond, set to play Port Townsend at 6:30, but, in a rare occurrence, both CHS volleyball and soccer had Friday night home games as well.

Making matters more complicated, volleyball was in two locations, as both the varsity and JV played at the same time in separate gyms. At the exact same time as soccer kicked off.

To their credit, Wolf fans stepped up and had a strong presence at all of the events, with many of them flying back and forth between events.

Leading the way was a pack of CHS students who got dudded up in uniforms (and helmets) and led the cheers at both volleyball and soccer.

Along for the ride was travelin’ photo man John Fisken, who provides us with the pics above.

I guess it paid to get him that 12-pack of Diet Coke, after all.

And then, as always, the giggles took over.

Ridin’ the ferry. Ridin’ the ferry all year long.

It’s what Whidbey athletes and fans do, and the familiar routine played out again, as a chunk of Wolf Nation flooded onto a boat or two and bobbed its way over to Port Townsend for a dash of Friday Night Lights.

Coupeville returned with a win (28-26 over Chimacum), a share of first place in the 1A Olympic League standings and a string of snazzy photos courtesy travelin’ camera clicker John Fisken.

The faces change from year to year, but the feeling remains.

Something magical about small town football Fridays, on and off the field.
