Clear skies make for a happy photographer.

With rain staying away Tuesday, wanderin’ camera clicker John Fisken was able to shoot Coupeville’s boys soccer home opener with relative ease.

His work done, he offers us the three pics above, as well as a link to where he’s stashed the rest.

Keep in mind purchases help fund college scholarships for CHS student/athletes, and are more likely to get Fisken to leave his recliner up in Oak Harbor.

So, off we go:

The weather might not have been warm, but the swings were crisp.

Braving the “spring”-like conditions Friday afternoon, Coupeville High School softball players took the field and held a Hit-A-Thon to raise funds for the program.

As the afternoon unfolded, wanderin’ camera clicker John Fisken, down for a visit from Oak Harbor, was nice enough to snag these pics for us.

Through rain and wind and all sorts of “spring”-like weather, the cameraman always delivers.

Mainly by staying inside where it’s dry and relatively warm.

Thursday was photo day for Coupeville High School spring sports teams, and wanderin’ paparazzi John Fisken was a busy, busy man.

The pics seen above are courtesy him.

As the various Wolf teams wade into action starting this Saturday (weather permitting), we’ll have much more here on Coupeville Sports.

Makana Stone (John Fisken photos)

The pro-Makana crowd likes what they see.

It's 3-on-1 and yet you know where that rebound is going -- right into Stone's hands.

Makana

Staying vocal during her brief time on the bench.

Killers when it matters most.

After losing twice in overtime during the regular season to the University of Puget Sound, Whitman College roared back to knock off the Loggers twice in eight days under the biggest spotlight possible.

First came a win in the championship game of the Northwest Conference tournament, but Saturday night topped that.

Holding off a furious fourth-quarter comeback by the Loggers, the Blues and fab frosh Makana Stone stunned UPS 69-67 in the second round of the NCAA D-III basketball tourney.

That sends Whitman to the Sweet 16, where they will face Trinity (Texas) Mar. 10 at a still-to-be-decided spot.

The Blues are 25-4, while their next foes, who hail from San Antonio, are 28-1.

Whitman and Trinity share a unique bond, as they were the only schools to knock off Puget Sound (26-3) this season.

Trinity nipped the Loggers 68-65 at a mid-season tourney hosted by Whitman’s league rival, Pacific Lutheran University.

Puget Sound, which won the regular season title in the Northwest Conference, is a dangerous team and it almost pulled off an astounding comeback Saturday night.

Whitman had jumped out to an 18-8 lead after one quarter, then stretched it to 54-41 heading into the fourth.

UPS finally started scoring, but Whitman still had them seemingly at bay at 66-57, when the Loggers went nuclear from behind the arc.

Back-to-back three-balls cut the lead to 66-63, but Whitman’s ever-steady Casey Poe blunted the rally by knocking down a jumper with 34 seconds on the clock.

After a Poe free throw with 25 ticks left pushed the lead out to six, the Loggers hit one final trey before Whitman escaped.

Coupeville import Stone, making her 12th start of the season, went for four points, six rebounds, an assist and a steal in the win.

Maegen Martin came off the bench to pace Whitman with 16 points, while Chelsi Brewer popped for 14 and Emily Rommel rattled the rim for 11.

Stone has played in 28 of 29 games this season (missing one with an injury), scoring 193 points (6.9 a night) and snagging 175 rebounds (6.3).

She is #2 on the team in rebounding and field goal percentage, while also racking up 30 assists, 14 steals and 11 blocks.

"Little help. Guys ... LITTLE HELP!!"

“Little help. Guys … LITTLE HELP!!”

Sometimes it’s better to ignore the scoreboard.

Thursday was one of those days, as the Coupeville Middle School girls’ basketball squads ran into a buzz-saw in the form of ginormous Stevens.

The school, which feeds 2A Port Angeles High School, is deep in numbers and loaded with talent, and the visitors took advantage of both to run the fairly inexperienced, thin-in-numbers Wolves off the floor.

Both games were virtual mirror images of each other, as the CMS 7th graders fell 47-8, before the “8th graders” lost 48-8.

I put quotes around 8th graders, since the Wolves have just four of those playing this season, which requires coach Ryan King to use a mix of younger players to fill out his roster.

Two of those 7th graders, Izzy Wells and Ja’Kenya Hoskins, each knocked down a bucket in the 8th grade game, while grizzled vets Genna Wright and Chelsea Prescott provided the other two.

In the seventh grade game, the scoring was also split between four Wolves, with Anya Leavell leading the way with three points.

Audrianna Shaw (2), Samantha Streitler (2) and Kylie Van Velkinburgh (1) rounded out the attack.

Stevens used a mix of deep shots (four treys) and inside buckets to romp in the opener, while the nightcap was one layup after another from a confident, polished squad that moved as one.

If there was one positive on the day for King and CMS 7th grade coach Megan Smith, it was that their teams didn’t crumble under pressure, and actually played stronger in the later stages.

The Wolf teams combined to score the majority of their points in the second half, rattling home 11 of 16 after the break.

Coupeville also got scrappy play from a number of girls, with Kiara Contreras and Heidi Clinkscales leading the charge on diving for loose balls.

The games were the home opener for CMS, which drew the attention of wanderin’ paparazzi John Fisken, who provides the pics above.
