Ever shifting, ever changing.

As seemingly thousands of high school track meets play out across Washington state, the top times and distances are constantly tweaked.

One thing which has remained consistent is a strong Coupeville presence, especially on the boys side of things, when you look at the top 2B performers.

The Wolves have three regular season meets left in April, then charge into the postseason beginning the first week of May.

As they prep for the stretch run, a look at CHS athletes who are currently among the top 10 performers in an event through Apr. 18:

Logan Martin had himself quite a day.

The Coupeville High School senior won the discus and hammer throw Saturday, and narrowly missed out on adding a title in the shot put while competing at the 21-team Lil Norway Invitational at North Kitsap Stadium.

Sparked by Martin’s performance, the Wolf boys, repping one of the three smallest schools in the field, finished fifth in the team standings.

Lynden, a 2A powerhouse, took top honors in the boys battle, while tying with Central Kitsap for the girls team title.

Martin, who has already signed to compete for Central Washington University, more than held his own against throwers from big-school rivals.

The invitational featured schools from all six classifications, with 15 of 21 teams coming from 2A, 3A, or 4A.

Letting it fly, Martin claimed second in the shot put, tossed a season-best in the discus, and went ballistic in the hammer throw.

His throw of 163 feet, five inches is not only the best by a Washington state high school athlete this season — second-best is 108-01 — but is also the seventh-best in the entire nation.

It’s believed to be a school record, though there is currently no mark for the hammer throw listed on the record board in the CHS gym.

That’s likely because the event is only held a few times a year, and is not currently part of the state championships.

It is, however, an event which Martin plans to compete in full-time as a college athlete.

Logan Martin launches.

Martin and his Wolf teammates had been out of action for two weeks plus, with their last meet way back on Mar. 31.

Coupeville gets two meets next week, heading to Oak Harbor Apr. 20 and the Gear Up Eason Invitational in Snohomish Apr. 23.

CHS coaches Bob Martin and Elizabeth Bitting were thrilled with the high points Saturday — Martin’s two wins and 15 PR’s for the team — while taking special joy in how their squad held up against the big boys (and girls).

“For being a small school, our boys did excellent!!!,” Bitting said.

“They can run/throw/jump with the big schools and hold their own! Very proud of them all! What a day!

“The girls ran amazingly,” Bitting added. “Whether they competed in the rain, hail, wind, they gave it their all and always had a smile on their faces.

“They know how to find the joy in all they do. So proud of them all!!! Woot! Woot!! GO WOLVES!!!”

It was a long, but very successful day.

Hosting their first home meet of the season Wednesday, the Coupeville High School track and field team outdueled 12 other schools to claim seven individual titles and 39 PR’s.

Not bad for a day full of rain spatters, and one in which everyone raced the setting of the sun.

“They ran/jumped/threw amazingly!” said CHS girls coach Elizabeth Bitting.

“The races in the twilight and into the dark were the most fun,” she added. “Seeing them come out of the darkness was very cool.”

The La Conner girls and Mount Vernon Christian boys notched team titles, with the Wolf squads claiming third and second, respectively.

Senior thrower Logan Martin paced Coupeville, earning titles in both the shot put and discus.

Joining him atop the victory stand were teammates Taygin Jump (javelin), Lyla Stuurmans (400), Aidan Wilson (long jump), Carolyn Lhamon (discus), and Ryanne Knoblich (long jump).

Reese Wilkinson set a PR in the discus.

Logan Martin won shot put and discus titles Saturday at the Port Angeles Invitational. (Eileen Stone photo)

“It was a crazy day.”

The Coupeville High School track and field team survived and thrived Saturday at the nine-team Port Angeles Invitational.

By the time the day was done, the Wolves had collected 10 individual wins — including a tie — and set 39 PR’s, all while dealing with a year’s worth of weather compressed into a few hours.

“Weather wise, (we had) wind, rain, hail and sun!” said CHS girls coach Elizabeth Bitting. “As one athlete put it, ‘Each event had different weather’.”

The invitational, which featured four 2A schools, a pair of 2B schools (including Coupeville), and three 1B schools, ran varsity and JV versions of every event.

Schools were limited to one entry in each varsity competition.

The 2A schools, with much-deeper rosters, dominated team scoring, with Sequim winning the varsity boys title, while tying with North Kitsap for the girls crown.

CHS was third in varsity girls and fourth in varsity boys.

On the JV side, Port Angeles (girls) and North Kitsap (boys) stood tallest, with both Wolf squads finishing fourth.

Coupeville emerged from the meet with six varsity crowns and four JV ones.

Senior Logan Martin (shot put and discus) topped the individual varsity winners, with Carolyn Lhamon (shot put), Ryanne Knoblich (high jump), Aidan Wilson (800), and Lyla Stuurmans (triple jump) ruling their events.

On the JV side, Lhamon (discus), Knoblich (long jump), and Cristina McGrath (triple jump) won, with the duo of Caleb Meyer and Nick Guay tying for top honors in the high jump.

It was a quick turnaround for Coupeville, which competed at a Northwest 2B/1B League meet in La Conner Thursday afternoon.

But rested or not, the Wolves stepped up.

“The athletes are finding their groove and achieving more PR’s,” Bitting said.

“We are proud of their efforts today and would like to give a big shout out to the parents who volunteered to help the meet run smoothly.”

Aidan Wilson was in fine form.

The Coupeville High School junior kicked off a new track and field season Wednesday in La Conner by claiming victory in three different events.

Competing in a nine-team meet at Jack Whitaker Field, Wilson captured titles in the 800 and long jump, while joining Reiley Araceley, Caleb Meyer, and Dominic Coffman on a victorious 4 x 100 relay squad.

Carolyn Lhamon (shot put) and Logan Martin (discus) also earned titles in the season opener, with both Wolf teams finishing second in the team standings.

The La Conner girls edged Coupeville 137.5-109.5, while the Mount Vernon Christian boys held off the Wolves 163.5-132.5.

Friday Harbor, Grace Academy, Lopez Island, Shoreline Christian, Lummi Nation, and Cedar Park Christian-Mountlake Terrace also competed.

Coupeville was strong across the board, recording 62 PR’s on the day.

“It was an amazing (long) day!,” said CHS girls coach Elizabeth Bitting. “These athletes now know where they stand and where they want to be.

“So much determination in them. So proud of them all!!!! SO PROUD!”
