Wolves run in Falcon territory

The ground trembled.

Footsteps echoed through the woods Saturday, as the Coupeville High School cross country squad competed at the 43rd annual Carl Westling Invite in Langley.

The massive harrier event, hosted by South Whidbey, drew 33 high school teams, plus a pack of middle school programs.

Coupeville sent 16 runners to the line, with seniors Mitchell Hall and Claire Mayne nabbing the fastest times for the Wolves on the 5,000-meter course.

The Wolves get a 2-for-1 special next week, running Wednesday, Sept. 21 and Saturday, Sept. 24.

First up is a Northwest 2B/1B League meet on Orcas Island, with the weekend bringing the King’s Invite.

Wolf harriers chase more success

Welcome to year five.

It may seem like just yesterday that Coupeville High School reactivated its cross-country program, but here we are, with the Wolves going strong and building on past success.

CHS sent three runners to the state meet a year ago — the program’s best showing since the 1980’s — and all three return for their senior season.

Helen Strelow is the defending Northwest 2B/1B League women’s champ, and she and Claire Mayne helped lead the Wolves to a team title.

Coupeville’s girls came within a single point of advancing to state as a team.

On the boys side of things, Mitchell Hall paced Coupeville to a second-place showing at the league championships, and a third-place finish at tri-districts.

That trio are joined by a strong group of returning runners and newbies.

Sophomores Landon Roberts, Thomas Strelow, and Carson Field are among those expected to have an impact for the Wolves, while George Spear and Zeke Allen are promising freshmen.

Thomas Strelow is part of a group of hard-working Wolf runners. 

Perennial powerhouse Mount Vernon Christian is Coupeville’s biggest league rival heading into a new season, but, as always, the Wolf runners largely control their own destiny.

“The goals for this season are to hopefully claim league champions and take as many runners to state as possible,” said Coupeville coach Paige Spangler.

“I really want the athletes to enjoy the season while still working hard and setting several personal records.”

The Wolf running guru, who is in her second year at the helm of the program, is excited to add “new speed work to our training program” to “put us in the best position to win.”

As her harriers prep to kick off their season — they debut at the Sehome Invite Sept. 10 — it’s all about getting better, race by race, practice by practice.

“The team has already shown how much they have improved from last year,” Spangler said. “They are really dedicated and spent their summer working hard.

“Everyone is pacing really quickly and it’s only the second week of the season.”

Race the clock, hit the tape

Mitchell Hall defended his home turf.

The Coupeville High School rising senior ran to victory in the 5K at Saturday’s Race the Reserve, earning one of three top finishes.

Joe Humrickhouse of Clinton and Chris Archer of Bellevue captured the half marathon and 10K titles, respectively.

Race the Reserve, which is the top fundraiser for Coupeville’s senior class, drew more than 200 participants to the prairie, with a huge chunk of runners claiming Coupeville as their home.

For the purposes of this article — since the blog is called Coupeville Sports and not the Boise Blabber or the Truckee Tattler — we’ll focus on just the locals.

Harriers cap awards season

Reiley Araceley was honored as Best Teammate.

It is done.

Fall sports came to an official end Wednesday, as the Coupeville High School cross country team closed out banquet season.

The Wolves and coach Paige Spangler honored their three state meet participants — Helen Strelow, Claire Mayne, and Mitchell Hall — while also acknowledging Strelow winning the Northwest 2B/1B League title.

Hall and Strelow were captains this season, while Reiley Araceley (Best Teammate) and Bryley Gilbert (Most Improved) also earned awards.

After a season full of individual and team success, Coupeville is set up well to keep its momentum going into season five of running the comeback trail as an in-school program.

There were no seniors on this fall’s team, and the Wolves can return 19 of 20 runners, with just foreign exchange student Svetlana Vanina guaranteed to depart.

Best team showing since the ’80s.

Coupeville High School sent three cross country runners to the line at the state meet in Pasco Saturday, the most since Natasha Bamberger was leading the Wolf girls to glory during the “Greed is Good” decade.

Marking the end of the fourth season for the CHS harrier comeback story, juniors Helen Strelow, Claire Mayne, and Mitchell Hall all hit the trails at the Sun Willows Golf Course.

Coupeville previously sent Danny Conlisk and Catherine Lhamon to state — in separate seasons — after reviving its in-house cross country program in 2018.

Hall had the fastest finish of the three Wolves Saturday, claiming 58th while covering the 5,000-meter course in 18 minutes, 44.4 seconds.

There were 112 runners in the boys 1B/2B race.

Mount Vernon Christian, which Coupeville dueled with all season in Northwest 2B/1B League action, finished sixth in the boys team race, with top Hurricane Devin Van Zanten (16:58.9) notching 5th in the individual competition.

Strelow (24:49.0) and Mayne (25:06.1) finished 58th and 62nd in their race, which featured 77 harriers chuggin’ away.

Pope John Paul II and Liberty Bell netted girls and boys team titles, respectively, with Chloe Overberg of Asotin (18:36) and Daniel Quintana of Ilwaco (16:30.9) winning individual crowns.
