“Aha, my old foe, you thought you could escape from me, but you were wrong, so wrong!”

Familiarity breeds improvement.

During its first season of competition, the Coupeville Middle School boys soccer team has just three rivals filling out its 10-game season.

The Wolves have beaten Granite Falls twice, while falling all three times they’ve played both Lakewood and Northshore Christian Academy.

The latest of those defeats came Wednesday in Lakewood, where CMS fell 4-0 on the pitch to their large-school rivals.

While the losses have piled up a bit during a 2-6 season, the chance to face off with the same squads has given the Wolves a chance to measure their progress.

In each of their three meetings, Coupeville has reduced the goals scored by Lakewood, a much-larger middle school which funnels students to a 2A high school.

The Wolves have brought the number down from eight in game one, to five in game two, then to four in the final meeting this season between the schools.

And it was actually much closer, as Lakewood only led 1-0 at the half and 2-0 late in the game.

A pair of back-to-back scores in the waning moments stretched out the margin, but didn’t dampen the positive showing from the Wolves.

“We played a great game against an undefeated team,” said Coupeville coach Reese Cernick.

“The Lakewood coach kept commenting the whole game how much we had improved and how on point our defense is.” he added. “This was one of the best games we’ve played this season, hands down.”

Coupeville has two games left on its schedule, traveling to Granite Falls Monday, Oct. 21 in pursuit of a season sweep.

After that, the Wolves wrap their inaugural season Oct. 23 at home against Northshore Christian.

The very bright future of Coupeville cross country.

Weather? What weather?

Running through sideways rain in Granite Falls Thursday, the Coupeville Middle School cross country team kicked off October in style.

The Wolves were decked out in pink wrist bands (and some freshly-dyed pink hair for Gabe Reed) in honor of the first race during Breast Cancer Awareness month, then attacked the course at the Granite Gallop.

With several runners making their season debut, the Wolves were at full force, with 6th grader Teagan Calkins and 8th grader Cole White notching the top times for the CMS girls and boys, respectively.

“Bang went the gun and off the runners went along with a DOWNPOUR!!!,” said Coupeville coach Elizabeth Bitting. “It was a wet, wet, race!!!!

“These runners didn’t let Mother Nature rain on the parade … well, race!,” she added. “They went out with a vengeance and finished strong!!”

Zane Oldenstadt stood tall in the goal for Coupeville Wednesday afternoon. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

Every game a lesson.

The final score wasn’t what they were hoping for Wednesday, but there are better days ahead for the Coupeville Middle School boys soccer team.

For one thing, the Wolves, now 1-3 after taking a 7-0 loss at Northshore Christian Academy, get to stay home for a bit.

Coming off of a three-game road trip, CMS now gets three straight home games.

The Wolves host Lakewood (Oct. 7), Granite Falls (Oct. 9), and get another crack at Northshore (Oct. 14).

Wedneday’s match-up pitted Coupeville against the best team in their four-school conference, and it made for an uphill battle.

“We played a tough team,” CMS coach Reese Cernick said. “We need to work on getting to the ball first.

“(Goalies) William (Davidson) and Zane (Oldenstadt) saved plenty of goals, but could not block them all,” he added. “Our back line was under constant bombardment as Northshore’s offense was dominating.”

The Wolves managed to put together a couple of runs at the goal, but couldn’t get the soccer gods to smile on any of their shots.

While he would have liked a score or two, Cernick praised the play of his offense.

“I felt our passing in the second half was a bit better,” he said. “We were more aggressive in the second half as well.

“I look forward to playing them again because they are a worthy opponent.”

Cole White had the fastest time of any Coupeville Middle School cross country runner Wednesday in Lakewood. (Morgan White photo)

Strength in numbers, strength in talent.

The Coupeville Middle School cross country squad trekked to Lakewood Wednesday for a seven-team meet, bringing along a full team and placing eight runners in the top 20, four girls and four boys.

Ayden Wyman claimed top honors for the Wolf girls during the 1.7 mile race, notching 11th place, while Cole White led the CMS boys, hitting the tape in 14th place.

That capped a busy day in which the Wolf harriers shared a bus with the CMS boys soccer squad, then arrived to find the course in Lakewood had been altered from last year.

Whether they were familiar with the course or not, the Coupeville runners made their coach proud.

“The boys ran beautifully … that number five spot is still up for grabs,” CMS cross country guru Elizabeth Bitting said. “The girls had a few new faces run. They all ran very strong!”

While she’s always tracking times and places, the Wolf coach especially enjoys seeing her young athletes make a mark in society, as well.

“The highlight of the day was being told that one of our runners (Gabe Reed), after he finished, he turned around, ran back on the course and started cheering on the runner behind him!,” Bitting said.

“Sportsmanship at its finest!!!”

Coupeville’s Daniel Olson reached base twice Friday, rapping a single and eking out a walk in a road loss to King’s. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

At least they’re headed home.

After absorbing an 8-0 loss to King’s Friday night in Shoreline, the Coupeville High School baseball team will spend much of the second half of its season on The Rock.

A team which lost eight players to graduation continues to struggle at the plate, averaging just a single run per game.

Hopefully, steady home cooking will power up the bats.

With Friday’s loss, the Wolves fall to 0-6 in North Sound Conference play, 0-10 overall.

Coupeville is tied with Sultan (0-6, 0-11), a half-game off of Granite Falls (0-5, 2-8) for the fourth, and final, NSC playoff berth.

Cedar Park Christian (8-0, 10-1), South Whidbey (8-1, 11-1), and King’s (4-2, 5-6) hold down the top three slots at the moment.

The Wolves play seven of their final nine regular-season games on the Island, with six in Coupeville.

CHS has three-game series with South Whidbey, Sultan, and Granite remaining on the schedule.

Over the next three weeks, Coupeville plays at home every Monday and Friday, with Wednesday road trips.

While the win/loss record is a big step down from last year, when a veteran Wolf squad finished 15-6, won a league title, and fell a game shy of the state tourney, this year’s team has been competitive.

Pitching and defense have been generally solid, and Coupeville has put runners aboard at a decent clip. But they keep missing out on getting a game-busting hit or two.

The Wolves hung with private school power King’s all week, but, after close 5-0 and 3-2 losses, Friday’s game finished with the most lopsided score.

The host Knights put the game away early this time around, using seven hits and two walks to pile up six runs across the first two innings.

After that, Wolf hurler Daniel Olson and reliever Gavin Knoblich largely stifled their foes.

Olson retired six straight batters from the end of the second inning to the beginning of the fourth, tossing four strikeouts in four innings of work.

Knoblich, who moved out from behind the plate, where he nailed a would-be base thief earlier in the game, pitched the final two innings.

He gave up just a single hit and whiffed a batter, while throwing to senior shortstop Matt Hilborn, who caught for the first time since his freshman campaign.

After banging out seven hits Wednesday, the Wolf offense sputtered Friday, putting only three runners on base.

Olson had the longest adventure, ripping a one-out single in the second inning, moving to second on a stolen base, then scampering to third on a ground-out.

Unfortunately that’s where his trip ended, and the Wolves accomplished little more at the plate.

Knoblich singled in the fourth, but was thrown out on an attempted steal, while Olson led off the fifth with a walk, only to again be stranded.
