Want to be a hoops star like Kyla Briscoe? Currently in grades 2-7? Then this summer’s Coupeville basketball skills camp is for you. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

Build your t-shirt collection and hone your skills.

Coupeville High School basketball coaches and players are running a youth skills camp this summer, and it shouldn’t be missed.

It’s open to Coupeville School District students who are entering grades 3-8 next fall (so, that means the child is CURRENTLY in grades 2-7) and is just a low, low $10 for three days of activity.

The camp, which will be held in the high school and middle school gyms, is set for June 18-20.

Sessions run from 9-11 AM (boys) and 12-2 PM (girls) each day.

Players will be split up, so younger and older players will have an opportunity to work within their age groups.

Registration deadline is May 31 and payment is due at check-in on the first day of camp. Your $10 gets you three days of instruction and a camp t-shirt.

As the weather warms, it’s time to head into the gym.

Coupeville High School volleyball coaches are planning two events for June, bringing the game they love to kids in grades K-12.

Leading off is the first annual Wolves Volleyball Skills Camp June 12-15.

Open to students entering grades 7-12 in the fall, the camp will run 3-6 PM each day and be held in the high school gym.

Cost is $25 and payment (and proof of a physical on file with the school) need to be submitted to Jamie Easton in the CHS office by May 26.

Cash and checks made out to “Coupeville High School” are accepted.

All participants will get a camp t-shirt.

Which, since this is the first-ever camp, will one day likely be a collectible.

If you’re smart, get CHS coach Cory Whitmore and current spiker stars like Emma Smith, Hope Lodell and Ashley Menges to sign your shirt.

Raises the dollar value down the road.

Whitmore, coming off an Olympic League title in his first season at the helm of the Wolves, views the camp as the perfect way to mesh current and future players in a fun environment.

“I’m really excited about this event and hope to make it a tradition for our summer plans,” he said. “We will get some crucial summer work done in preparation for the fall season, it will serve as a program fundraiser and provide a unifying t-shirt for our middle school and high school players.”

Questions can be directed to cwhitmore@coupeville.k12.wa.us or (509) 347-6301.

Then, June 23-24, Whitmore will team with the Coupeville Boys and Girls Club to present its Summer Volleyball Camp, with separate lessons for students entering K-2 and 3-6.

Those clinics, which cost $40, run from 9 AM – 1 PM each day.

Registration needs to be done by June 2 to get a t-shirt, though, if you’re willing to forego the shirt, you can register up to the day of the camp.

For more info and to register, swing by the Boys and Girls Club (203 N. Main), call 678-5640 or email caguilar@bgcsc.org.

shirt

Bitting’s shirt design.

You, yes you, can win Sherry Roberts and friends new t-shirts.

It’s simple.

A pack of local runners (others include CMS track coach Elizabeth Bitting and Wolf mom Deb Smith) who compete in the Ragnar Trail Relay series are also taking part in the SweatVac t-shirt designing competition.

Whichever team gets the most votes nabs eight shirts featuring their design, which is a cool $256 worth of merchandise.

Bitting’s design for the Sasquatchettes is currently sitting in first place in a seven-way race that ends July 15, but by a razor-thin margin.

Time for Wolf Nation to step up and put our runners over the top. Waaaaay over the top.

Facebook only allows one vote per person, but if we all vote and spread the word, there is no poll we can not utterly destroy.

History bears that out.

Which of these is not the same as the others?

Which of these is not the same as the others?

I have a battered, cruddy t-shirt, worn down by time and the tears of those who toiled for The Whidbey Examiner while she was still still an independent newspaper.

The hole across the collar is getting larger, and, since the shirt itself is getting thinner after several years of wear and washing, it’s about to go from a slight annoyance to full-on disgrace.

I should probably throw it away, or burn it.

And yet, I have held on to it, since it was the last connection to a time before the Canucks swept down from Moosejaw and bought up The Examiner, putting a monopoly on Whidbey’s three papers.

Having written a lot of stories for the rag — my weekly video column alone ran, without missing a week, for 15 years — I wasn’t thrilled to see it sold off to Black Press, becoming just another small line item in a vast global media empire’s business report.

But, we’re not here to rehash that.

Instead, I’m here to show off the unexpected gift that showed up in my mailbox yesterday.

Having seen a photo of my much-battered Examiner t-shirt, Eric at Ashley’s Design (http://www.ashleysdesign.com/) in Oak Harbor decided, on a whim, to print up some shirts for Coupeville Sports, using a similar design.

It was a nice, unexpected surprise.

As this blog careens, slightly out-of-control, towards its two-year anniversary on Aug. 16, maybe it’s time to put on a new t-shirt and fully discard the past.

Who wants to make smores cooked over the embers of a beat-up Examiner t-shirt?

Anyone … anyone … BuellerBueller?
