No more open jobs.

For the moment, at least.

Coupeville High School/Middle School Athletic Director Willie Smith has filled coaching positions for CHS girls’ soccer and CMS track and field.

Kim Kisch, one of the first booters to play for the Wolf program when it launched in 2004, is coming back around to call the shots as head coach starting next fall.

She replaces Kyle Nelson, who retired at the end of the most-recent season.

Meanwhile, Amber Wyman, already hired to coach middle school cross country, will also pick up coaching duties with the CMS track and field program.

Returning coach Jon Gabelein and Wyman welcome a new squad to the first day of practice Apr. 10, with a six-meet schedule running Apr. 26-May 31.

Before becoming a head coach, Wyman was an assistant helping middle school (now high school) running guru Elizabeth Bitting.

Both hires will be official once approved by the school board.

The numbers tell a positive story.

As the high school track and field season continues to unfold, Coupeville, which has its biggest roster in decades, continues to draw notice.

The latest accolade comes from Evans Rankings, whose computer currently ranks the Wolf boys as the #3 team in 2B, while placing the CHS girls at #6.

Chewelah’s boys and Okanogan’s girls top those standings at the moment.

Plus, scan the results on Athletic.net, and you’ll find a large pack of Wolves hanging out in the upper echelons, as well.

Katie Marti, the most entertaining athlete in high school sports. (Delanie Lewis photo)

She’s a one-person wrecking crew, just like grandpa.

Go back through the history of Coupeville High School sports, and Paul Messner’s name looms large, whether the sport under discussion is football or track and field.

Now, jump forward to 2023 and Wolf sophomore Katie Marti, having made the transition from softball to track, is pounding folks just like gramps did back in the day.

Saturday the scene of destruction was Bob Larson Stadium, host of the Stanwood Frosh/Soph Invitational.

Or, as they shall refer to it after this, the Katie Marti Just Kicked Your Fanny Invitational.

Winning the shot put, discus, and javelin, Christi Messner’s favorite daughter pulled off the trifecta, and accounted for three of Coupeville’s five wins on the day.

Fellow sophomores Monroe Myles (200) and Zac Tackett (discus) joined Marti atop the podium, while CHS athletes combined to rack up 18 PR’s.

All across the USA, former Wolves were on the prowl Saturday.

Whether it was track and field, rowing, or baseball, Coupeville grads were knee deep in college sports.

A look at CHS alumni in action:

Ja’Tarya Hoskins:

The former Wolf cheerleader and track star ran in the 200 at the Peyton/Shotwell Invitational in Tacoma, hitting the tape in 30.52 seconds.

Hoskins is a redshirt sophomore at Saint Martin’s University and on target to graduate this spring.

Joey Lippo:

The former Wolf three-sport star racked up three hits, three walks, two runs, an RBI, and a stolen base while playing a pair of baseball doubleheaders in Boston this weekend.

A junior at the University of Maine at Presque Isle, Lippo continues to be one of the true bright spots for an Owls team struggling to find a winning groove.

On the season, he’s hitting .283 with 14 hits, including a triple and a home run.

Lippo has scored eight times, while picking up six RBI and walking six times.

Logan Martin:

The Central Washington University freshman was also at the Peyton/Shotwell Invitational, where he claimed 2nd place in the discus.

Besting 14 of 15 rivals, Martin heaved the throwing implement 128 feet, nine inches.

Lucy and Sophie Sandahl:

The sister combo was on the waters at the Husky Open Saturday, competing for Seattle Pacific University in women’s rowing.

Lucy was the coxswain for a pair of varsity 4+ boats which finished second to powerful Cal Poly in four-team fields, while Sophie manned an oar as the Falcons varsity 8+ crew zipped along.

The Sandahl sisters return to action Apr. 1, when SPU hosts the Falcon Regatta.

The oval was hoppin’.

Coupeville High School held its first home track and field meet Wednesday, and photographers shuffled event to event, snapping away.

“Eat my dust, old man!!”

Fun fact: in between races, Neil Rixe does his taxes.

Desi Ramirez finds her inner Zen before unleashing the shot put.

It’s a paparazzi shoot-off at high noon (or, more likely, about 4:45 in the afternoon).

CHS coaches Elizabeth Bitting (left) and Amber Wyman got the sunny weather they wanted.
