Wolf track shines at league meet

Sean Toomey-Stout, who won league titles in the long jump and 4 x 100 relay, gets some love.

They came, they saw, they more than held their own.

The Coupeville High School track and field squad won eight events, set 24 PR’s and established a new school record in the pole vault Thursday while competing in the inaugural North Sound Conference Championships.

Along the way, the Wolves claimed 2nd in the girls team standings and 3rd in the boys.

King’s topped the league’s six schools in the girls battle with 192 points, with Coupeville (102), South Whidbey (98), host Granite Falls (76), Cedar Park Christian (57), and Sultan (9) rounding out the field.

On the boys side, South Whidbey nipped King’s by the thinnest of margins, winning the team title 142.5-142.

Coupeville (109.5), CPC (69), Granite (41), and Sultan (20) filled out the remainder of the stat sheet.

The Wolves were led by senior Danny Conlisk, who captured league titles in the 200 and 400, while also running a leg on the winning 4 x 100 relay team.

He narrowly missed out on a fourth title when CHS teammate Jean Lund-Olsen nipped him by 0.01 in the 100.

Other Wolf league champs included Emma Smith (shot put), Maya Toomey-Stout (long jump), Koa Davison (high jump), and Sean Toomey-Stout (long jump).

While she narrowly missed out on a league title, junior pole vaulter Mallory Kortuem continued to lay waste to her own school record in the event.

The Wolf junior soared eight feet, six inches Thursday, topping her best previous effort by a solid three inches.

Next up for Coupeville is the district meet, which goes down May 9 and 11 at Lynden Christian.

CMS track strides into history

There’s a new twist to middle school track and field this spring.

Washington state is letting 6th graders compete in home meets for the first time, which meant some new faces popped up Wednesday as Coupeville hosted a three-team meet.

And the newest Wolves had an immediate impact, with top honors going to Lyla Stuurmans.

The only 6th grader in an 11-woman field in the 200, she claimed 2nd place, finishing just a second off of a Langley 8th grader.

“That was an amazing feat!” said CMS coach Jon Gabelein.

The meet, which also featured Langley and King’s, had 6th, 7th, and 8th graders competing together, with no distinction made for grades.

A 6th grade relay team comprised of Stuurmans, Mia Farris, Chloe Marzocca, and Savina Wells roared to 2nd in the 4 x 100, while Landon Roberts claimed 4th in the 110 hurdles.

Coupeville’s 7th and 8th graders more than held their own, as well, with three Wolf boys winning titles.

Joven Light ruled in the 400, Cole White out-ran the field in the 1600, and Alex Murdy sailed to first in the high jump.

CMS has two home track meets on the schedule this season, and the 6th graders will get a chance to compete again May 8 when Sultan and Lakewood come to Whidbey.

Stretch for the finish line

Things are getting tense.

With the regular season wrapping Thursday, the Coupeville High School track and field team is on the cusp of kicking off the postseason.

As they prep for the league meet, which is followed by districts, bi-districts, and state, those Wolves fighting for spots atop the leader board are having to fight for every .001.

With May just a few days away, Coupeville has athletes in the top 10 for 1A in eight different categories, with senior Danny Conlisk sitting #1 in the 200.

The other highlight?

Both CHS girls relay teams moved up in the standings after strong performances in the regular season finale.

Kortuem soars, Wolves roar

Mallory Kortuem keeps flying higher and higher.

The Coupeville High School junior smashed her own school record in the pole vault Thursday, soaring three inches above her previous-best of eight feet while competing at a three-team meet in South Whidbey.

The final regular-season event for the Wolf track and field team, it turned into a showcase as the girls won the team scoring title and CHS athletes combined for 16 wins and 25 PR’s.

Coupeville’s girls finished with 59 points, edging out Cedar Park Christian and South Whidbey, which each tallied 51 in the team tussle.

On the boys side, the host Falcons (73) topped Coupeville (58) and CPC (49).

The Wolves had four athletes win two individual events, as Kortuem (400, pole vault), Maya Toomey-Stout (100, long jump), Lindsey Roberts (100 hurdles, high jump) and Sean Toomey-Stout (long jump, triple jump) doubled their pleasure.

Toss in three relay wins, two by the girls, and individual titles for Emma Smith (shot put), Ryan Labrador (shot put), Jean Lund-Olsen (100), Koa Davison (high jump), and Chris Battaglia (discus) and it made for a strong finale.

Coupeville kicks off the postseason run next Thursday, May 2, when it travels to Granite Falls for the North Sound Conference championships.
