Seek and destroy!!

Wolf coaches Lark Gustafson (left) and Ryan Georges monitor the action.

Carolyn Lhamon stops ‘n pops.

The future of Wolf hoops is here, and it’s already rampaging on the hardwood.

Balanced scoring and a killer third quarter equals victory.

At least it did Saturday for the Coupeville 8th grade SWISH girls basketball squad, which bounced Mount Vernon Christian 26-18 in its season-opener.

Busting open a tied game, the Wolves used a 9-2 run in the third, with five players scoring, to claim the victory.

The big shot came from Lauren Marrs, who knocked down a three-ball, while Gwen Gustafson and Brionna Blouin added buckets of their own.

Savina Wells and Maddie Georges each slipped a free throw through the net to round out Coupeville’s third-quarter outburst.

Georges had the hot hand early, hitting a pair of first-quarter buckets as the Wolves went to the first break up 8-7.

After MVC knotted things at 12-12 at the half, Coupeville responded in grand fashion in the third, than held on behind the play of Carolyn Lhamon in a see-saw fourth quarter.

Lhamon led the Wolves with six points and 14 rebounds, while Georges (5), Brionna Blouin (4), Marrs (3), Alita Blouin (3), Hayley Fielder (2), Gustafson (2), and Wells (1) all put points on the board.

Ryanne Knoblich was a terror on defense for Coupeville, and Wells, who is just a 6th grader, snagged nine boards.

Masters of the mat.

Coupeville sent a strong group of performers to Saturday’s “Battle on the Island” taekwondo tourney in Langley, bringing home a staggering collection of medals.

3rd grader Tenley Stuurmans claimed four titles, and she was joined on the podium by fellow CES students such as Finley Helm and Ben Shaw.

Helm, a 1st grader, was the only novice white belt in the room, but showed no fear and no desire to back off.

The six-year-old master of disaster claimed third-place in three events (Traditional Forms, Pro-Tech Weapons and One-Step sparring), with just six weeks of training under her belt.

Meanwhile, Shaw, a 2nd grader, made off with a first-place medal and a pair of second-place finishes while vying in Freestyle Form and Weapons events.

Stuurmans, Helm and Shaw were joined Saturday by fellow Coupeville warriors Marin Winger (3rd grade), Lydia Kelly (2nd grade), and Logan Kelly (Kindergarten).

To everything there is a finish.

With the North Sound Conference down to just two teams still alive in the playoffs – King’s volleyball and soccer – this is our last league standings update.

For a few weeks.

Once high school basketball games kick off, we’ll be right back here every Sunday morning.

But, until then, this is it for fall.

If you deeply care how King’s does at the state tourney, where both of its squads are the defending 1A champs, you can easily find those results elsewhere next week.

This isn’t Knights Sports.

At least not until they come through with some of that sweet, sweet private school pay-off cash to keep me in the style I dream about…

Anyways.

Entering this past week, there were still multiple teams from other NSC schools alive, but, one by one, they all fell.

Coupeville and South Whidbey volleyball went down, Cedar Park Christian and South Whidbey soccer fell, and the league’s football squads got bushwhacked.

Big time.

Facing off the with always-tough Northwest Conference, the gridiron squads from the NSC were swept aside in four games.

Meridian drilled South Whidbey 59-8, Lynden Christian rapped King’s 42-14 and Mount Baker made it a two-fer.

The Mountainers destroyed Granite Falls 61-0 in the play-in game, then thumped NSC champ Cedar Park 49-10.

With those wins, the Northwest Conference accounts for three of the 16 football teams headed to the state playoffs, while the North Sound Conference comes up empty in year one.

At least on the gridiron, since, as I said up top, King’s can still repeat as state champs in two sports.

To which, as public school supporters, we say … yay???

Nope.

Coupeville 3rd grader Tenley Stuurmans captured four titles Saturday at her first taekwondo tourney. (Photo courtesy Scott and Sarah Stuurmans)

Don’t mess with Tenley Stuurmans.

The Coupeville Elementary School 3rd grader is only one tournament into her taekwondo career, and she’s already a four-time champ.

Stuurmans, daughter of Scott and Sarah, stepped on the mat at the Island Christian Academy in Langley Saturday, emerging with seven top-three performances.

She captured titles in Extreme Weapons, Creative Weapons, Extreme Forms, and Creative Forms.

Toss in 2nd place finishes in Traditional Forms and Traditional Sparring and a 3rd place in Combat Sparring, and Stuurmans went home covered in medals.

The younger sister of soccer sensation Lyla Stuurmans, and a cousin, niece or granddaughter to about 10,000 Coupeville legends, Tenley is creating her own niche in the sports world.

She started taekwondo last spring and trains at Armstrong’s ATA Martial Arts School.

Nick Streubel went all the way to Missouri to deliver a beat-down.

The Coupeville High School grad and his mates on the offensive line blew up everyone in sight Saturday, as Central Washington University shattered school records left and right in a 74-28 drubbing of host Southwest Baptist.

The non-conference victory lifts “The Big Hurt” and the Wildcats to 8-2 on the season.

Central closes the regular season next Saturday, Nov. 10 at home in Ellensburg.

Beat Azusa Pacific for the second time and the Wildcats (7-0 in league play) would complete a second-straight undefeated march through the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.

After that, Central should return to the NCAA DII football playoffs. Last season the ‘Cats fell 34-31 in an overtime classic to eventual national champion Texas A&M-Commerce.

Saturday, playing across the country in Bolivar, MO, Central, with Streubel and his fellow linemen clearing the way, shattered several rushing records.

The Wildcats set new marks for rushing touchdowns (nine), yards (514) and yards per rushing play (9.3 yards).

Central also broke its record for total touchdowns in a game, tacking on a touchdown pass and a pick six to turn things up to 11.

Overall, the ‘Cats piled up 667 yards of offense, which is third-best in school history.

Surprisingly, one record which didn’t fall Saturday was for total points, as Central scored 75 against Fort Lewis back in 2002.

Streubel, a three-sport star, urban legend and internet phenom back in his Coupeville days, is a red-shirt junior at CWU. He was an All-Region pick for his play on the offensive line last year.
