Clockwise, from top left, are Craig Anderson, BreAnna Boon, Michael Davidson, Alex Evans, Scott Fox, Arik Garthwaite, Sarah Reinstra, Jon Roberts, Brad Sherman, Chris Smith, Megan Smith, Patrick Upchurch, and Greg White.

You don’t have to fight, but it’s more interesting if you do.

It’s that time of the season, when David is looking for some sweet, sweet page hits, so he tosses a group of coaches in a (digital) room, slaps 50 hours on the clock, and waits to see who emerges triumphant.

The battle to be named “Top Coach of the Winter” kicks off Saturday, Dec. 28 at 7 AM, and closes Monday, Dec. 30 at 9 AM(ish).

We have 13 coaches repping middle and high school basketball, as well as CHS cheer.

As always, you can vote as many times as your little heart (and voting fingers) desire.

Now, as in every poll here on Coupeville Sports, there’s no real trophy, just a nice warm glow in the chest of the winner.

And the chance for that coach to lord it over every other coach, at least until we launch the “Top Coach of the Spring” a couple of months from now.

To the coaches involved, if you don’t care about the award, no worries.

And if you? Let the bodies hit the floor!

Gavin Knoblich comes flyin’ in hot.

Gwen Gustafson hits the brakes, giving her hair a case of whiplash.

Alita Blouin gets down ‘n dirty.

Ulrik Wells touches the heavens.

Avalon Renninger does complex mathematical equations in her head while waiting for someone to get open.

Hawthorne Wolfe pounds home the rock.

The Wolf JV boys get rowdy.

It’s the sound of silence.

We’re on Day 5 of a 12-day run with no Coupeville High School basketball games, as winter break plays out.

The Wolves return to action Jan. 3, when both the girls and boys travel to Chimacum for the final non-conference action of the season.

Unless the Port Townsend games — postponed by the concern high winds would affect the ferries — get rescheduled, that is.

But, I’m not holding my breath on that happening.

After the Chimacum match-ups, Coupeville jumps full-force into North Sound Conference games, with the girls at home first, welcoming Cedar Park Christian to Whidbey Jan. 7.

As we wait for the sound of basketballs thunking off the hardwood to return, here’s some photos from John Fisken to fill 2-3 minutes of your time.

And now, some rest.

Having reached the sort-of halfway point of the season, give or take a game or three here and there, the North Sound Conference basketball teams are headed out for winter break.

Coupeville has 12 days off, with neither its girls or boys teams returning to action until Jan. 3.

Not all teams are taking the break off, but those who aren’t will be playing exclusively non-conference foes.

The King’s boys will play in a tourney in Arizona, both Granite Falls squads are set for Crush in the Slush in Port Townsend, and there are a handful of other games spread out around Christmas and New Year’s Day festivities.

Then, January rolls around and things get serious, as everyone starts to hunt league titles and playoff positioning.

For now, there have been just two league games played on either side of the ball, with the Coupeville girls one of those tied atop the current conference standings.

As we head into the break, where things sit:

North Sound Conference girls basketball:

School League Overall
Coupeville 1-0 6-2
CPC-Bothell 1-0 5-3
Granite Falls 0-0 2-4
King’s 0-0 4-2
South Whidbey 0-1 2-5
Sultan 0-1 3-5

North Sound Conference boys basketball:

School League Overall
Granite Falls 1-0 1-5
King’s 1-0 4-3
Coupeville 0-0 3-5
South Whidbey 0-0 6-1
CPC-Bothell 0-1 3-4
Sultan 0-1 1-6

The camera goes both ways.

Sometimes John Fisken aims his lens at the action on the basketball court, but, just as often, he lets his gaze wander through the stands.

The photos seen above, which come to us courtesy of him, capture Wolf fans at a recent Coupeville High School boys basketball game.
