It was the last poll of the decade, and it came down to a mere handful of votes.

In the end, Coupeville High School boys basketball coach Brad Sherman rallied to edge out CMS boys hoops guru Greg White and lay claim to the “much-coveted” title of “Top Coach of the Winter 2019.”

Sherman finished with 176 votes in our 13-coach, 50-hour poll, which wrapped Monday morning, while White racked up 172 tallies.

Rounding out the top five were Alex Evans (154), Arik Garthwaite (108), and Megan Smith (43).

Up the charts they go

It’s a living, breathing thing.

Sort of.

Over the last couple of years, one of my obsessions has been trying to track down and document a definitive career scoring chart for both Coupeville High School basketball programs.

With the Wolf boys having started play way back in 1917, and the CHS girls joining them in 1974, there’s a lot of moving parts.

I’ve managed to pull together a list which I feel is fairly solid, while also (sort of, kind of) accepting there are some road blocks which may never be fully overcome.

We may never have scoring stats for that first Wolf girls team in 1974-1975, and old school stars Mike Criscuola, Jack Elzinga, and Tom Sahli may not get full credit for their complete stats.

Barring the creation of a time machine, or someone finding missing score books buried in an attic or barn, that’s just reality.

Frustrating as it is.

But, the positive side of this is I have documented the (mostly complete) scoring stats for 392 Wolf boys and 229 girls.

If I was normal, I’d wait until the end of the season, then take the 2019-2020 totals and add them in, updating the list at that point.

Instead, I tweak things after every game, so I can watch history unfold in real time, current players moving upwards, passing the stars of previous eras.

As we depart 2019, here’s all active Wolf players with varsity points to their credit.

That includes sophomores Ja’Kenya Hoskins and Xavier Murdy. Both are injured and yet to see action this season, but have multiple seasons ahead of them.

Bide your time, watch the standings

There were basketball games this week, just none involving Coupeville.

The Wolves are on Day 8 of a 12-day break between contests, not returning to action until Friday, January 3, when they travel to Chimacum.

But other North Sound Conference teams did lace up the shoes and head to the hardwood, so we’re back to provide a look at where everyone’s win/loss record sits.

Have to fill the time somehow, so here’s where things sit:

One (winter) coach to rule them all

You don’t have to fight, but it’s more interesting if you do.

It’s that time of the season, when David is looking for some sweet, sweet page hits, so he tosses a group of coaches in a (digital) room, slaps 50 hours on the clock, and waits to see who emerges triumphant.

The battle to be named “Top Coach of the Winter” kicks off Saturday, Dec. 28 at 7 AM, and closes Monday, Dec. 30 at 9 AM(ish).

We have 13 coaches repping middle and high school basketball, as well as CHS cheer.

As always, you can vote as many times as your little heart (and voting fingers) desire.

Now, as in every poll here on Coupeville Sports, there’s no real trophy, just a nice warm glow in the chest of the winner.

And the chance for that coach to lord it over every other coach, at least until we launch the “Top Coach of the Spring” a couple of months from now.

To the coaches involved, if you don’t care about the award, no worries.

And if you? Let the bodies hit the floor!

It’s the sound of silence.

We’re on Day 5 of a 12-day run with no Coupeville High School basketball games, as winter break plays out.

The Wolves return to action Jan. 3, when both the girls and boys travel to Chimacum for the final non-conference action of the season.

Unless the Port Townsend games — postponed by the concern high winds would affect the ferries — get rescheduled, that is.

But, I’m not holding my breath on that happening.

After the Chimacum match-ups, Coupeville jumps full-force into North Sound Conference games, with the girls at home first, welcoming Cedar Park Christian to Whidbey Jan. 7.
