With the first match just a week away, the Coupeville High School girls tennis team took a moment out of practice Monday to let wanderin’ photo man John Fisken snap some glossies.

It’s Mar. 12, it’s at home, the foe is Port Angeles and things kick off at 3:15 PM on the CHS courts.

So, now you know, and knowing is half the battle.

Spring sports are back. Spring weather is not.

Braving a chilly, possibly still ice-encrusted prairie, five Coupeville High School teams kicked off a new season Monday, and chattering photo bug John Fisken was on hand to document the doings.

Me?

I was under my blankets on the recliner, watching old videos of Bill Laimbeer and the Detroit Pistons “Bad Boys” beatin’ the crud out of Michael Jordan.

Much warmer.

Some events were straight hand-to-hand combat, while others featured weapons.

   Coupeville Middle School 6th grader Cameron Breaux is ready to fend off any challenge.

The gym was jammed, with body parts flying everywhere.

Saturday’s “Battle on the Island,” a taekwondo tourney run by Armstrong’s ATA Martial Arts, brought hundreds of fighters (and their support crew) to Coupeville High School.

In between the flying fists and lunging legs, intrepid photo guy John Fisken clicked away, and the pics above are hot off his camera.
