Lindsey (John Fisken photos)

The happiest moment of the day for Lindsey Roberts (left) and Ema Smith? When school lets out and they get to run away to the soccer pitch. (John Fisken photos)

Future Wolf sharpshooters work on their skills.

Kalia

Wolf freshman Kalia Littlejohn demonstrates the footwork which has allowed her to score four goals in her first five high school games.

Ashley Smith

Ashley Smith (left) and Bree Daigneault shadow a young booter, ever-ready to offer a bit of advice.

Spark

Kirsten

A dance party breaks out.

Someone teaches you the game, then you pass it on.

That’s the mantra for most soccer players, one on display Tuesday afternoon on the Coupeville High School practice field.

The current Wolves, most of them wearing snazzy warm-up jackets, took some time out from their own work to impart some bits of wisdom to a group of future CHS booters.

A couple of years ago, sharpshooters like Kalia Littlejohn and Bree Daigneault were on the receiving end of the lessons. Now they’re the ones helping to shape the young women who may one day succeed them.

It’s the soccer version of the circle of life.

Kiara Burdge

Kiara Burdge, and her megaphone, get the crowd worked up.

Gaby Halpin

Gaby Halpin is part of a large group of freshmen who have joined the Wolf cheer squad this fall.

Sylvia

Wolf captains Sylvia Hurlburt (left) and Allison Dickson spend some quality time with CHS coach Cheridan Eck.

Amanda

Two Neitzels on the same cheer team? Five times the awesomeness, as lil’ sis Amanda joins big sis Maddy.

Three weeks in and not an ounce of their spirit has faded.

The Coupeville High School cheer squad remains the loudest and the proudest in all the land, and, at some point, Wolf fans will actually get to see them work the sidelines at home during a varsity football game.

CHS travels to Port Townsend this Friday for its fourth consecutive road game to open the season, but, after that, the Wolves are home four Fridays in October.

Want to see how veteran cheerleaders like Jovanah Foote and Lainey Dickson or young guns like Katherine Morales do once we reach fog season?

Get your buns to Mickey Clark Field Oct. 2 (Klahowya), Oct. 9 (Port Townsend), Oct. 16 (Chimacum — Homecoming) and Oct. 30 (Concrete), and prepare to be impressed.

JR Pendergrass is about to unload a can of whup ass, and your address is on the return label. (John Fisken photos)

JR Pendergrass had a candy bar in his locker, for after the game. It’s missing, and he now has a can of whup-ass with your name on the return label. (John Fisken photos)

You thought you had a candy bar carefully hidden in your locker, waiting for after the game. Hunter Downes disagrees.

Hunter Downes: “Don’t make me run. I’m full of chocolate.”

"DOWNNNNNEEESSS!!!!"

Brenden Gilbert: “DOWNNNNNEEESSS!!!! You dare to mess with lineman chocolate?!?!?”

"It was actually me!!" Dylan Schachtner

Dylan Schachtner: “Unless it was really me…”

"I will burn

Wiley Hesselgrave: “I will burn down your house of chocolate with you in it, Goldilocks!! Three generations from now, your family will cry when they look at a candy bar!!!!!”

Matt Stevens

Matt Stevens: “Good lord, Hesselgrave. Is is too late to go play tennis instead? Seriously. Guys? Guys?”

Clay Reilly

Clay Reilly, being a veteran, stays out of the fray, staring thoughtfully off at the setting sun, thinking about baseball season. Or candy bars. Probably candy bars.

Let’s face it, girls are better than boys.

OK, let me clarify. What I’m talking about is high school female athletes posing for photos, as opposed to their male counterparts.

The ladies love the camera and are far, far more willing to be goofy or entertaining, while the dudes too often buy into the idea that you have to simply stare at the camera with no smile or it somehow shows weakness.

Like anything, it’s not always true.

Hunter Hammer had a love affair with the camera, Gavin O’ Keefe had a huge smile in every pic ever taken and Joel Walstad couldn’t tamp down his impish charm. There are guys who will step up.

But, as a whole, girls kicks guys butt.

So, it’s nice to leaf through the CHS football portraits taken recently by John Fisken and see some variety.

A smile here, an artful pose there. Some individuality breaking out.

I’ve gathered some of the best for your quick-reading perusal today, as concrete proof that, hey guys, be willing to play to the camera (at least a little bit) and it’s far more likely you’ll see your picture up on Coupeville Sports.

If that’s your thing.

If not, carry on. McKenzie Bailey will be back any second.

“I said NOOOOOOOO!!!” Grizzled vets Lathom Kelley (44) and Wiley Hesselgrave (10) team up to block a Chimacum kick.

Wiley

Mark

Proud papa Mark Hesselgrave exchanges hair care tips with the most stylish soccer player in Wolf Nation, Kirsten Pelroy. Yep, I’m sure that’s what’s happening.

Hunter Smith

Hunter Smith, about to make a lot of folks miss.

A win is a win, but photos last forever.

As the buzz from Friday’s victory over Chimacum fades just a bit (eventually the focus will shift to next week’s foe, Port Townsend), Wolf football fans can relive the moment through John Fisken’s photos.

With Oak Harbor High School on a rare bye week, we got the travelin’ photo man’s full attention, and he delivered the pics above.

And then, as always, the giggles took over.

Ridin’ the ferry. Ridin’ the ferry all year long.

It’s what Whidbey athletes and fans do, and the familiar routine played out again, as a chunk of Wolf Nation flooded onto a boat or two and bobbed its way over to Port Townsend for a dash of Friday Night Lights.

Coupeville returned with a win (28-26 over Chimacum), a share of first place in the 1A Olympic League standings and a string of snazzy photos courtesy travelin’ camera clicker John Fisken.

The faces change from year to year, but the feeling remains.

Something magical about small town football Fridays, on and off the field.
