Die-hard Coupeville High School spring sports fan? Gas up the car and get ready to enjoy ferry life.

All five Wolf teams have more road games than home contests during their final spin through the Olympic League, with softball getting the shortest end of the stick.

The CHS sluggers, who went 19-5 last season and came within a strike of making the state tourney, are scheduled to play 12 of 20 regular-season games away from their home field.

Baseball (11 of 20 on the road), girls tennis (9 of 17) and boys soccer (8 of 15), have it slightly better, while track, as usual, spends 98.2% of its season away from home.

The Wolves do host one high school track meet (Mar. 28 vs. Port Townsend, Klahowya and Chimacum), which will be the first one to go down in front of the school’s new grandstand.

Boys soccer gets to debut the new stadium, when it hosts 2A non-conference foe Olympic Mar. 10.

Will there be cake to celebrate the debut of the shiny new grandstand? We can only hope!

Another milestone is set to arrive May 7, when the Wolf softball squad plays its final regular-season game.

Chimacum is the foe that day, and the bout is the last regular-season conference game in any sport Coupeville will play against a 1A Olympic League opponent.

After a four-year run in their current league, the Wolves jump to the new six-team North Sound Conference with the start of the 2018-2019 school year.

As you peruse the schedules below, remember, weather, ferries and other assorted problems can, and will, likely rip them to shreds at some point.

We’re going inside.

As fall sports begin to shift to winter sports, the basketball courts will light up with activity, and we’ll all get out of the rain and wind.

Monday marks four weeks until Ulrik Wells and other Wolf basketball players hit the hard-court. (Photos by JohnsPhotos.net)

CHS seniors Lauren Rose (22) and Allison Wenzel (12) are vital parts of a girls hoops program which is 27-0 all-time in varsity Olympic League games.

It’s never too early to think about basketball.

Four weeks from today (Monday, Nov. 13) is the first day of practice for Coupeville High School’s hoop teams, and the first official game is two weeks after that.

On the girls side, David and Amy King return for their sixth season at the helm of the Wolf varsity and JV programs. Meanwhile, the CHS boys program starts anew, with first-year coaches Brad Sherman and Chris Smith.

Coupeville’s girls have won three straight Olympic League crowns, are 27-0 all-time in conference play and went to the state tourney in 2016.

Success has been a little harder to find on the boys side of the ball, where the Wolves haven’t posted a winning season since 2010.

Sherman, who graduated from CHS in 2003, was a key player on the 2001-2002 boys basketball squad, the last to win a league title. He’s the #8 scorer in program history.

And that history is a long one, as the Wolf boys are heading into their 101st season of round-ball play.

Thanks to smart (or lucky) scheduling, Coupeville hosts Chimacum Jan. 19, 2018, the anniversary of the first basketball game in school history.

Back then, CHS drilled Langley 29-7 on Jan. 19, 1917.

The Wolf girls program hasn’t been around as long — this will be its 44th season — but owns all three state banners (6th in 2002, 8th in 2003 and 8th in 2005) won by a Coupeville basketball team.

As you count down the days until hoops mania reigns supreme, a fairly concrete look at the 2017-2018 schedules is below.

Things may change a bit, due to weather, ferry issues or the whims of fate, so keep an eye on these two sites for updates as we go forward:

Coupeville Schools — http://coupeville.tandem.co/

Olympic League — http://www.olympicleague.com/

Schedules are tricky things.

Jump back some 78 days and I was brave (or naive) enough to publish the first batch of fall sports schedules for Coupeville High School.

Of course, just as I suspected, stuff has changed. A few little tweaks here, a few radical detours there.

So now, as we sit less than 72 hours away from the first official game of the 2017-2018 school sports year, here’s the revamped, buffed ‘n shined version of the fall sports schedules.

Will things continue to change? Without a doubt.

After this, weather will play a big part in how smoothly the tennis schedule plays out.

And, of course, we live on an Island that gets a fair amount of wind and relies on ferries, so…

Use this as a guide, but keep on eye on http://coupeville.tandem.co/ and http://www.olympicleague.com/ for updates.

And here you go, 98.3% correct … at least for a moment:

Fleet-footed Abby Parker, perfectly capturing the look of the spring athlete who kind of wished the season didn't start until June.

Fleet-footed Abby Parker, perfectly capturing the look of every track athlete who kind of wished the season didn’t start until June.

Now, we’re not trying to hurry basketball out of the gym.

Having endured more than one “spring” on the prairie, I would be perfectly willing to wait until May or June for spring sports to start.

But, the powers that be don’t agree with me, so here we are, less than three weeks until the first day of practice pops up Monday, Feb. 27.

The first games hit Saturday, Mar. 11, and the first time we’ll ever be warm at a game will arrive the day AFTER spring sports end.

Anyway… Here’s your 98.3% correct schedules.

While there may be a tweak or two to come (and weather can, and will, mess everything up at some point), this is pretty close to being ready for the ol’ lamination machine.

Three side notes here.

One, CHS track gets its first home meet in many a year, as the brand-new oval makes its debut Mar. 30.

And your eyes don’t deceive you — the Wolf softball squad gets an honest-to-goodness home doubleheader Apr. 3, when they welcome Blaine to town during Spring Break.

Finally, baseball’s opening day, especially if you look at it on the Olympic League site, is a little confusing.

It lists the Wolves playing at home against La Conner and on the road at Lynden Christian, when in reality both games will be played on the road.

It’s a three-team doubleheader at Lynden, with Coupeville considered the home team in the La Conner game … even though they won’t really be at home.

Got that?

The diamond women have the spring’s most favorable schedule, with 12 of 20 at home.

Baseball (10 of 20 or “11” of 20, if we’re counting the road “home” game) and boys soccer (8 of 15) also play on Whidbey more times than not.

Only girls tennis (6 of 15) and track (1 of 8) will be true road warriors.
