They’re contenders.

The Elite Eight, which includes three freshmen, one sophomore, one junior and three seniors, currently hold positions in the Top 10 among all 1A participants.

   Double winners (4 x 100 and 4 x 200), it’s (l to r) Mallory Kortuem, Maya Toomey-Stout (red hoodie), Lauren Grove and Lindsey Roberts.

Sarah Meyer (right) basks in the glow of daughter Mckenzie, a two-time winner (pole vault, 4 x 400).

One side was a rout, the other a brawl.

Winning 11 of 17 events, the Coupeville High School girls track squad crushed host Port Townsend and 2A North Mason Friday afternoon.

The Wolves, who swept all three relay races and had double individual event winners in Lucy Sandahl, Skyler Lawrence and Lindsey Roberts, finished the final regular season meet with 96 points.

That put them well ahead of PT (40) and North Mason (26).

On the boys side, three points separated the three teams.

Port Townsend slipped away with the win, compiling 57 points to North Mason’s 55 and Coupeville’s 54.

The Wolf boys won four events, with Cameron Toomey-Stout (Long Jump), Gabe Carlson (800), Jacob Martin (Javelin) and Mitchell Carroll (Triple Jump) triumphing.

Sandahl swept the 800 and 1600, Lawrence won the Shot Put and Discus and Roberts couldn’t be topped in the 100 Hurdles or Long Jump.

Mckenzie Meyer (Pole Vault) and Lauren Grove (200) rounded out the individual CHS winners.

Having wrapped a 10-meet season, Coupeville kicks off the postseason with an appearance at the Olympic League Championships May 6 at North Kitsap.

The Wolves host the league’s JV Championships May 8, then it’s on to sub-districts, districts and state for those who qualify.

Coupeville Middle School track coach Elizabeth Bitting shares results with some of her athletes. (Deb Smith photos)

Ben Smith waits for his moment to shine.

The weather in Port Angeles was a constantly changing affair.

A new season begins.

Packing 20 or so athletes onto the bus, the Coupeville Middle School track and field squad headed to Port Angeles Wednesday, where it clashed in a three-team meet.

While there, the Wolves faced one team (Forks) comparable in size and one (host Stevens) which had 140+ athletes.

And yes, that is supposed to say 140 and not just 40…

While the Wolves had no shot at bringing home team titles in those kind of conditions, they did battle for individual glory, with Jake Mitten (High Jump) and Ja’Kenya Hoskins (60-yard dash) winning their events.

“We had some standout performances,” said CMS coach Elizabeth Bitting. “We were able to get some places.

“We had rain, wind, sun, a little bit of it all.”

Now, as you gaze upon the following results, give me a little leeway, since A) I’m going off of handwritten results and a couple of numbers were tricky to decipher and B) not a single bit of this is appearing in the Whidbey News-Times.

So, here we go, and let’s see how close I got to reality.

Irrepressible track mom Dawnelle Conlisk hangs out with two of her favorites, son Danny (middle) and Kyle Burnett.

Piling up that Senior Trip cash, one hot dog sale at a time.

Speedy Lauren Grove slows down long enough to catch a moment with the parental units.

Having won their tennis matches, Wolf netters (l to r) Fanny Deprelle, Payton Aparicio and Sage Renninger stop by to cheer on their classmates.

Jacob Martin gets a little help with his prom proposal.

Ema Smith has never turned down a photo request. Ever. That’s why she’s the best.

The Lindsey Roberts Fan Club is on scene. Much raucous cheering, mainly from mom Sherry (left) soon ensued.

Toomey-Stout returns to Earth and leans in for a group pic with (l to r) Mckenzie Meyer, Lindsey Roberts and Lauren Bayne.

The sun was shinin’, the PRs were poppin’ and the cameras were clickin’.

Monday brought the season’s second official home track meet to Cow Town, and all the noise and activity lured in the paparazzi as well.

John Fisken was on hand to snag action pics, but also swung his camera around to capture some behind-the-scenes moments as well.

If you like what you see, pop over to his site — http://www.johnsphotos.net/ — and support his work.

When you do, money gets kicked back to provide college scholarships to CHS student/athletes. So, win-win.

Cameron Toomey-Stout lets it all hang out.

Unleash the Wolves.

Hosting its second official meet at its new home facilities, the Coupeville High School track and field team was a ruthless host Monday afternoon.

Obliterating two of its former long-time rivals, Friday Harbor and Lopez, the Wolves, even shuffling their lineup around, were extraordinarily dominant.

The CHS girls won 14 of 17 events, while the Wolf boys finished first in 11 of 15.

Coupeville won four relays, and had 17 different athletes win an individual event, led by double winners Mckenzie Meyer, Skyler Lawrence, Jacob Martin, Lauren Grove, Mitchell Carroll and Lindsey Roberts.

The Wolves set 28 PRs in the meet, with one of the most impressive performances coming from Allison Wenzel.

Throwing the javelin on a clear, sunny afternoon on her home turf, the CHS junior shattered her previous best by an astonishing eight feet, six inches.
