Those machines run on 1’s and 0’s approve of our prairie hardball ways.

Evans Rankings, which has smiled favorably on several Coupeville High School sports teams during the 2022-2023 school year, likes the Wolf varsity baseball squad.

After feeding all the data into Newman — the resident computer possibly bent on world domination — noted number cruncher Matt Evans emerged from the basement Monday with the news CHS lands at #7 in 2B in his first rankings of the season.

The Wolves, who sit at 11-4 heading into a game at Concrete Tuesday, have five regular-season tilts left on the schedule.

After that, Coupeville heads off to the three-team District 1/2 tourney, where it will be the top seed in a single-elimination royal rumble with a state tourney berth at stake.

The booters are back.

After being knocked down by the pandemic, the North Whidbey Soccer Club’s annual Rock On! 3 v 3 tournament lives again this summer.

The popular event, which ran for 12 years prior to the Covid-19 shutdowns, is set for May 27-28 this year.

The tourney is open to players from age seven and up, with teams from on and off Whidbey joining.

Cost is $150 for a youth team and $175 for an adult team.

Youth teams play to the oldest player’s age group, while co-ed teams play in the boys’ division.

Trios don’t need a coach, but youth teams need an adult willing to “be in charge.”

Registration deadline is May 12.

Back to practice for them.

Just as the weather finally flirts with an actual springtime feel, the Coupeville High School girls’ tennis squad finds itself with a hole in the schedule.

The Wolves have a 10-day break between matches, not wielding rackets against another team until May 2, when they travel to Friday Harbor.

Filling the gap (slightly) is this collection of photos, which come to us courtesy Brionna Blouin and John Fisken.

Every second counts, every inch matters.

As we wind our way towards May, the number of regular season track and field meets dwindle, with the onset of the postseason just on the horizon.

Taking our weekly look at how Coupeville High School athletes stack up against other 2B stars, we have movement from last Monday.

A scan of the top 10 marks in each event show the Wolves going upwards four times, with sophomore Katie Marti jumping back into the elite in the javelin.

Aidan Wilson (400) and both 4 x 400 relay squads are also trending up after strong showings at the GearUp Eason Invitational, while CHS remains in the top 10 in 13 of the other 15 events it previously occupied.

And for those two guys (briefly) bumped from the list by newcomers — Nick Guay in the 200 and Tate Wyman in the 300 hurdles?

Both remain in the top 10 in other events, plus have a chance to compete again Saturday, April 29, when the Wolves attend the Sunny and 70’s Invitational in Lakewood.

Luke and Maria Summers both ran in the half-marathon Sunday.

Thousands of runners, but we only care about 27 of them.

Sunday’s Whidbey Island Marathon brought a sea of humanity to Deception Pass and outlying areas, but the only way those runners get into this story is if they listed Coupeville as their hometown.

You call Alabama, Oregon, or (shudder) Oak Harbor your place of residence?

Good on you.

Now go start your own blog. It ain’t that hard.

With that said, we present the few, the proud, the Central Whidbey residents who ran in the half-marathon, 10K, or 5K.

As far as I can tell, no one from Coupeville took on the full 26.2-mile main event this time around.
