It’s suds ‘n spirit

Dirty cars help make the wheels on the bus go round and round.

Coupeville High School cheerleaders were out and about Saturday, conducting a car wash fundraiser, with the money raised going to help fund a bus to carry the team to road games.

We can’t vouch for how clean photographer John Fisken’s own ride may be, but the wandering cameraman did stop off and snap the pics seen above and below.

Into the woods they go.

Coupeville Middle School cross country guru Elizabeth Bitting brought her runners to their first meet of the season Saturday in Langley.

And hopefully she had the big bus, as the Wolves sent 31(!) runners to the line at the 43rd annual Carl Westling Invite.

That’s an astonishing number for a program at a small school, and there’s talent to go with the roster depth.

Paced by four top-10 finishers, the Wolf girls claimed 2nd place out of five middle school teams in action, including beating host South Whidbey — a traditional powerhouse — for the first time ever at this event.

“They did AMAZING!!!!!!,” Bitting said. “Today’s goal was to have a good time and I think that goal was accomplished!”

The Wolf boys were strong as well on the 3,000-meter course, finishing 3rd on their side of the books, while King’s captured team titles for both genders.

Coupeville gets a chance to chase after the private school titans another time, with a trip to the King’s Invite set for next Saturday, Sept. 24.

Avery Eelkema (left) and Ossian Merkel attack the trail, fists at the ready just in case they need to throw down with any rival teams.

The ground trembled.

Footsteps echoed through the woods Saturday, as the Coupeville High School cross country squad competed at the 43rd annual Carl Westling Invite in Langley.

The massive harrier event, hosted by South Whidbey, drew 33 high school teams, plus a pack of middle school programs.

Coupeville sent 16 runners to the line, with seniors Mitchell Hall and Claire Mayne nabbing the fastest times for the Wolves on the 5,000-meter course.

The Wolves get a 2-for-1 special next week, running Wednesday, Sept. 21 and Saturday, Sept. 24.

First up is a Northwest 2B/1B League meet on Orcas Island, with the weekend bringing the King’s Invite.

Nick Wasik spends some quality time with his phone before Saturday’s race.

“Very pleased with the way we played today.”

Coupeville High School boys soccer coach Robert Wood put some extra emphasis on the first word in that statement after his team bamboozled visiting Cedar Park Christian-Lynnwood Saturday afternoon.

Kicking off the front end of a pitch doubleheader, with the Wolf girls playing in the nightcap against Ocosta, the CHS boys rolled to a 7-0 victory.

The win lifts Coupeville to 1-1 on the season, with both games coming against Northwest 2B/1B League rivals.

The Wolves hit the road early next week, traveling to La Conner Tuesday, Sept. 20, before hosting their next two games.

The first of those home tilts will be a Friday special, with kickoff at 4 PM and admission free.

Playing on their own field Saturday afternoon, the Wolves dominated from start to finish.

“Mixing up the formation and player positions does wonders,” Wood said. “Everyone executed the game plan as we talked about – quick deliberate passing with pace and accuracy.

“Off-ball movement to support the ball; three touches max before distribution; aggression and determination to get the ball first; confident defending as a team.”

Coupeville spread its scoring out, with four different players beating the CPC goaltender.

Cameron Epp opened the assault on the net, rifling home a penalty kick in the game’s 10th minute, and then then the rout was on.

Reiley Araceley, Alex Smith, and Preston Epp each scored twice to round out the offense, with all four players netting their first high school varsity goal on the same day.

With four more sharpshooters etching their names in the scorebooks, 67 Wolves have scored for the CHS boys soccer program, which began in 2004.

He’s traveled across the country in pursuit of his athletic dreams.

Coupeville High School grad Ben Smith is currently suiting up for the Eureka College football team in Illinois.

The NCAA D-III school is best known for a former football player named Ronald Reagan, who graduated in 1932 before going on to be a movie star, the Governor of California, and the 40th President of the United States.

The current Red Devils gridiron squad is 1-0 in conference play and 1-2 overall after whacking visiting Rockford 31-14 Saturday.

Smith, who was a First-Team All-Conference running back during his time at Coupeville, is listed at linebacker.

A college sophomore, he’s played on special teams in all three of his games, wearing #36 while chasing after kick returners.

Smith, whose older brother Jacob was a top track and field star at CHS, is studying criminal justice at Eureka when not playing football.

Reppin’ the Red Devils.
