Spring is sprung.

The weather isn’t all that balmy, but the calendar says Feb. 27 and Washington state is famous for starting prep spring sports way too early, so here we go again.

Next season could be history-making.

Nothing is ever set in stone — just ask the players who lost chunks of games to a pandemic — but when the 2023-2024 high school basketball season rolls around, we could see one of Coupeville’s biggest records fall.

After throwing down 554 points in 23 games as a junior — the second-best single-season performance in school history — Logan Downes has racked up 778 points in a Wolf uniform.

That puts him #15 all-time for a program launched in 1917, with a former teammate (Hawthorne Wolfe) and two of his coaches (Brad Sherman and Hunter Smith) among those still ahead of him.

Of course, there’s still Tom Sahli, sitting at #21 with the 719 points he compiled across his junior and senior seasons.

If we ever find stats for his sophomore campaign in 1951-1952, he likely jumps somewhere up around the top 10.

But while we continue to stalk the past, we also celebrate what we know for sure.

Toss in 360 points as a senior, and Downes tops Jeff Stone and Mike Bagby, who jointly hold the CHS boys career scoring title.

Now, to break the school scoring record — 1,549 by Brianne King — Downes would have to nearly double his current output.

But it’s not impossible.

Make a full run at the state tourney, play 26 games, average a hair under 30 points a night, and all the records fall.

No pressure.

Only time will tell, but that’s the allure of monitoring the scoring chart, watching players rise, writing new chapters in the tale of Wolf basketball.

There are nine active CHS players who have scored in a varsity game, and Downes is not the only one chasing history.

Cole White splashed home a three-ball to cap his junior season, giving him a crisp 200 career points, while a player to watch is Chase Anderson.

The fab frosh got increasingly more playing time as the season unfolded and finished with 55 points.

Two years ago, Downes — during a pandemic-shortened season — tallied 52 points as a freshman.

The scoring chart — it’s a living, breathing, ever-changing thing.

This is where it sits mid-day Feb. 20, 2023.

Hawthorne Wolfe, international man of mystery. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

Fly high, Hawk.

Coupeville grad Hawthorne Wolfe had a strong debut for the Western Washington University club baseball team this weekend, picking up a win and save as the Vikings took two of three from Oregon State in the season opener.

WWU split games on Saturday, winning 6-5 and losing 4-1, then bounced back to claim Sunday’s bout 6-5 in 11 innings of taut diamond action.

Wolfe picked up the save in game one, facing four batters and retiring three of them.

The former Coupeville sensation came back around Sunday to nab the win on the mound, chucking the final three innings as the Vikings pulled out the victory.

Western returns to action next weekend when it hosts Eastern Washington University Feb. 25-26 at Squalicum High School.

The teams play at 1 PM and 3 PM Saturday, then clash at 11 AM Sunday.

The Vikings have a long, successful diamond history, including a run at the National Club Baseball Association Division 1 World Series in 2013 when Coupeville grad Jordan Wilcox played for the team.

During his time at CHS, Wolfe was named Northwest 2B/1B League MVP during his senior baseball season, while also terrorizing his foes on the basketball court.

Makana Stone has places to be, and buckets to score. (Photo property Marianne Maja Stenerud)

Bow down before your hardwood queen.

Coupeville grad Makana Stone continues to torch the nets in Norway, throwing down a game-high 27 points Sunday to lead Baerum basketball to its third-straight win.

The former Wolf ace also snagged 10 rebounds, doled out three assists, made off with four steals, and rejected a shot as she and her associates drilled Midtbyen 71-53.

Baerum led from start to finish, running its record to 13-5 on the season and staying right on the heels of Asker (14-6) in the battle for second place in the seven-team Kvinneligaen pro league.

Ulriken, which sits at 19-0, remains atop the standings.

Stone and her squad jumped out to a 24-15 lead after one quarter of play Sunday, before stretching their advantage to 47-24 by halftime.

Midtbyen slightly sliced its deficit down in the second half, but just barely, trimming five points from a 23-point Baerum lead.

Makana’s 27 points were her third-best performance in Norway, as she also scored 33 against Asker and 29 against Ulriken in previous games.

Andre Stone’s lil’ sis has compiled 340 points, 220 rebounds, 41 assists, 51 steals, and 11 blocks in her second season of pro hoops.

She played for Leicester in England last season before hitting the road and trekking to Norway.

Baerum returns to action Mar. 1 when it faces off with Ullern, which sits at 8-10 on the season.
