Harriers kick off trail season

The season began with a flash.

Or a couple of them.

Dodging a bit of lightning Saturday in Maple Valley, the Coupeville High School cross country squad joined 40+ other schools in participating at the season-opening Tahoma Coed Relays.

The jamboree-style event featured boys and girls competing together, with each five-member team limited to three runners from either gender.

And when Mother Nature allowed the runners to stay on the course, the Wolf harriers put the pedal to the metal, earning praise from coach Elizabeth Bitting.

“It was a strange relay,” she said. “The lightning delay messed everything up. Stopping in the middle of the relay was weird!

“The runners however didn’t let it dampen their runs. They each ran their leg and enjoyed the water portion,” Bitting added.

“It made for a fun and wet start to the season.”

Coupeville returns to action next Saturday, Sept. 13, when it travels to Bellingham for the GearUp Northwest Cross Country Preview.

Run fast, run strong

They’re sprinting for the start line.

With the beginning of a new school cross country season fast approaching, Coupeville harriers hit the trail this weekend to take part in the annual Lake Padden Relays in Bellingham.

The Wolves had seven teams competing, making for their “largest group yet” at the event, said CHS coach Elizabeth Bitting.

The trail guru and her athletes were joined by assistant coaches and parents, all running under the name “Evolution of a Runner.”

Coupeville captured a pair of first place finishes, with their top boys squad joined by Bitting and fellow coach Andy Wyman in claiming top honors.

Long run, big payoff

It made for great team building.

Coupeville High School cross country runners and coaches teamed up this weekend to participate in Ragnar, covering ground from the wilds of Blaine down to the Southern tip of Whidbey Island.

“Other teams go to camp, we ran RAGNAR,” said CHS coach Elizabeth Bitting.

“They all ran amazing, their splits were phenomenal, their energy was off the charts, they pushed back their tiredness, the memories they made were priceless.”

The Wolves were financed by a variety of folks, including the Coupeville Booster Club.

“I wanted them to pay for nothing and just enjoy the experience,” Bitting said.

With Ragnar being a unique competition, it gave the Wolves a new perspective on what they can accomplish both as individuals and as a team.

“This relay changes how you look at races,” Bitting said. “You run your leg then immediately jump back out to cheer on your teammates … no matter what time of day or night that might be.

“You run, eat, sleep, repeat! It was truly a great experience. I hope I’ve made sone Ragnarians for life!!”

CHS cross country, which finished third among high school teams, had two vans operating under a “Running with the Pack” banner.

Harriers hail “a great season”

They’re the fastest to the finish line.

Coupeville High School’s cross country runners are the first Wolf fall sports athletes to hold a season-ending banquet, handing out awards and letters Wednesday night.

As she hailed her harriers, CHS coach Elizabeth Bitting also praised all involved in the program.

“A heartfelt thank you to the parents as well,” she said. “And thank you to our team parent, Shaloma Allen.

“A thank you to (CMS) Coach (Amber) Wyman for attending races with us, and Mr. Coach Wyman for the miles he logged with ‘The Boys’.”

The Wolves will graduate four runners, with three of those having competed during all four of their years at CHS.

“It was a great season!” Bitting said. “Missing those seniors already.”

Look back, move forward

One week left.

Or actually more like three or four days.

Fall sports comes to a close for Coupeville High School this coming week, with volleyball making a trek to Yakima for the state tourney Wednesday and possibly Thursday.

The Wolf spikers are the last team standing as soccer, football, cross country, and cheer have wrapped their campaigns.

So that means today’s look at the standings is our last one until basketball season kicks into gear.

Ari Armstrong, Nick Shelly and associates have gotten CHS sports off to a strong start this fall.
