The Coupeville boys attack as a pack.

Hank Milnes is so fast, his feet don’t even touch the ground.

The Wolf girls brace for the sound of the starter’s pistol.

Carolyn Lhamon zings across the fresh grass.

Cole White ambles on home.

From nothing, they built something. The first CMS cross country squad in 20+ years.

They are the trailblazers.

The 15 young men and women in Coupeville Middle School cross country jerseys who ran Wednesday in the league championships at Langley may not fully realize what they have accomplished.

But, as time passes, as the CMS program continues to grow and rebuild, these Wolves, the ones who ran their hearts out all season, will be remembered.

They are the ones who brought cross country back to their school after a 20+ year absence.

The ones who stepped up and said “Me, I will go,” when Coupeville Athletic Director Willie Smith asked to see shoes at the starting line.

The harriers, many new to the sport, who trained every day, who blossomed under the tutelage of coach Elizabeth Bitting, a cross country champion given the chance to live out her second dream as a coach in the sport.

They are the start, they are the dream realized, and, one day, when they have children of their own, they will look back on the fall of 2018 and proudly say, “I did it. You can do it. One foot in front of the other, never stop running, and never stop believing in yourself.”

Moms (l to r) Lisa Toomey, Maria Reyes, Irene Echenique and Renae Mulholland sell sweet treats for a good cause, as CHS raises money for cancer research.

The Coupeville student section brings the noise and the funk for the rivalry game.

Maddie Vondrak whispers “I’m so sorry” to the volleyball, seconds before hitting it so hard the side of the ball caves in.

The Wolf varsity holds special pink footballs they later tossed to their fans.

One team, one dream.

Maya Toomey-Stout gets down with her bad self.

Scrappy libero Emma Mathusek, the glue that holds the Wolves together.

After turning photographer John Fisken pink in honor of his sister, who fought breast cancer, the Wolves bring out the gun show.

The spikes were slammin’, the cameras were clickin’ and the money was rainin’ down.

The Coupeville High School volleyball squads waged titanic fights with visiting South Whidbey Monday (JV fell just short, while the Wolf varsity rolled to a big win), while also raising money for cancer research.

Along for the ride on Dig Pink Night was wanderin’ camera clicker John Fisken, who snapped pics in between having his lush locks and beard sprayed pink in memory of his sister, who fought bravely against breast cancer.

Everything came up aces.

Despite being the middle of Oct., Monday’s Coupeville High School boys tennis match had perfect weather.

In a season where fall rain has played less of a role than normal, the Wolves and visiting Seattle Academy enjoyed pristine conditions.

That also made life easier for wanderin’ paparazzi John Fisken, who swung by the CHS courts to see what was goin’ down.

The photos above are courtesy him.

Adapt on the fly.

When school administrators shut down the Coupeville Middle School football season two games early, citing injuries and a lack of team depth, it left me holding several John Fisken photos I was saving for later use.

So, I ran my last two action pics with the story about the season being suspended, and today you get the final four head-shot portraits which hadn’t previously run on Coupeville Sports.

If you want to see all the CMS gridiron action snapped by Fisken, and maybe buy grandma a glossy for Christmas, pop over to:

How long was it, you ask? Very long.

Wednesday’s middle school volleyball clash between Langley and Coupeville went on for 4+ hours, giving John Fisken time to shoot a bunch of pics, wander away to complete another job, and still get back with enough time to shoot some more glossies.

The photos seen above are a mix of 8th and 7th grade varsity matches, as he was off on the other shoot during the JV rumbles.

To see all the shots Fisken snapped during his two visits to the CMS gym, pop over to:
