The final batch.

At the start of the fall sports season, candid camera clicker John Fisken shot portraits of virtually every Coupeville High School athlete.

While a few Wolves were missing on their photo day, he managed to capture a solid 98.6% of those who turned out for soccer, cheer, cross country, tennis, volleyball and football.

And, over the course of the season, I managed to run just about every one of the portraits he sent me.

Today’s group, consisting of four cheerleaders, four spikers and one gridiron warrior, brings my mission to an end.

So with that, it’s on to winter, where, with just basketball, both of our jobs will take a lot less time and effort.

We think…

Logan Martin is a master of many arts.

The Coupeville Middle School 8th grader is a standout three-sport athlete (football, basketball and track), but also one who just revealed a skillful touch with the camera.

Making his bid to move into the hotly-contested world of the paparazzi, Martin captured the images above when he was at the recent Lil’ Norway Track and Field Invitational with dad Bob, an assistant coach for CHS.

Coupeville’s Kyle Burnett, modeling a puffy jacket at an earlier meet, won the pole vault Monday at a three-team home meet. (Photos by JohnsPhotos.net)

When Ariah Bepler gazed into his future, did he see himself shattering his PR in the high jump while his grandpa watched? If so, it came true.

Lucy Sandahl, cruising here earlier this season, ran away with wins in two events on her home track.

A huge part of track and field is competing against yourself.

The Wolves kept that in mind Monday, as they endured the blazing sun (by Whidbey standards, at least) and limited resistance from their foes.

While Coupeville High School’s student body is small, Friday Harbor and Lopez have even fewer athletes to draw from, so there wasn’t much chance they would upend the Wolves on their home oval.

And the meet played out exactly as most would have predicted, with the CHS girls winning all 16 events and the Wolf boys capturing 11 of 15.

Coupeville swept all four relays, while Lucy Sandahl, Keahi Sorrows, Lindsey Roberts, Lauren Bayne, Jacob Smith and Sean Toomey-Stout each won two individual events.

Maybe more importantly, 18 different Wolves set a PR at the three-team meet, with seven earning two personal bests on the day.

Fleet-footed CHS track stars (l to r) Mallory Kortuem, Natalie Hollrigel, Maya Toomey-Stout and Lucy Sandahl catch the ferry home Wednesday from Sequim. (Deb Smith photo)

It had a little bit of a David vs. Goliath feel.

Coupeville, a 2B-sized school forced to masquerade as a 1A, was but a speck Wednesday, at least compared to its track and field rivals.

And yet, facing a trio of large 2A schools at a four-team meet in Sequim, the Wolves held their own, winning four events and setting 12 PR’s.

The CHS girls, buoyed by victories from Mallory Kortuem (400), Lindsey Roberts (100 Hurdles) and Lauren Bayne (High Jump), finished third in the team standings.

With 52 points, the Wolves narrowly missed catching Olympic (58), while easily beating Sequim (40). A very-deep North Kitsap squad (117) ran away with the victory.

On the boys side, Coupeville was missing several top athletes.

Running ace Danny Conlisk and thrower Chris Battaglia were dealing with health issues, while sprint god Jacob Smith had to scratch most of his events Wednesday after his hamstring tightened up.

Without three of their biggest individual scorers, the Wolf boys settled for a win in the high jump from Ariah Bepler, finishing fourth in the team race with 30.5 points.

North Kitsap (105), Sequim (69) and Olympic (59.5) rounded out the field.

Coupeville spread its PR’s out, with 11 athletes getting at least one.

Keahi Sorrows led the way, bettering his previous top marks in both the shot put and discus.

Willow Vick closed out her first year of high school sports humming “We are the Champions.”

The Coupeville High School freshman, who suited up with twin sister Raven in volleyball and track, won the high jump Monday at the Olympic League JV Championships.

Making things better, Willow did it while competing on her home track, as CHS welcomed the other 10 league schools to the biggest event it’s hosted yet at its new track facilities.

The meet brought together seven 2A schools and four 1A schools, with North Kitsap, the biggest school in attendance, winning both team titles.

Coupeville, which had eight athletes competing, finished 7th on the boys side and 8th in the girls battle.

Willow Vick provided most of the Wolf points for the girls squad, out-dueling a pair of North Kitsap foes in the high jump.

She was one of six athletes from 1A schools to win an event, as the much-larger 2A schools captured titles in 25 of 33 events.

Chimacum’s Nina Haddenham (Discus), Ryan Caldwell (200, Shot Put) and Michael Gepitulan (Discus), Port Townsend’s Sierra Ruegg (200, 100 Hurdles) and Klahowya’s Mia Brill (Long Jump) joined Vick to uphold 1A honor.
